Suttles: Iron Bowl buzz has been clouded with outside noise. That’ll change at kickoff
So far as Iron Bowls go — at the very least within the hours main as much as the sport — there’s a sure nonchalant-ness that exists, hanging within the air just like the November rain that’s forecasted to fall Saturday afternoon.
I’m positive that’ll change as kickoff approaches, it’s Alabama–Auburn, in spite of everything. However there aren’t the same old stakes in danger this yr like we’ve so typically seen connected throughout the Nick Saban period. There was extra buzz this week about Brandon Miller and the Crimson Tide’s unbeaten basketball group than there was about one of many largest rivalry video games in all of sports activities.
I’m not talking for the gamers, after all, however for the ambiance surrounding the sport outdoors of the soccer constructing.
From the Auburn perspective, this week has been stuffed with the tennis-like backwards and forwards of the Lane Kiffin rumors for the Tigers’ opening teaching place. Will he or received’t he? As of now, after telling assembled media within the Egg Bowl postgame information convention Thanksgiving night time, Kiffin seems to be staying at Ole Miss. However he nonetheless hasn’t signed an extension and him doing an about-face and heading to Auburn would shock precisely nobody.
That’s the ambiance in the meanwhile, an odd factor to make certain.
That is an uncommon state of affairs for Alabama, not being within the School Soccer Playoff pole place, though a well-liked school soccer content material merchandise this week has been the multi-step situation that may sneak the Crimson Tide into the CFP. That’s a nightmare plot for followers who thought they’d lastly be rid of the Tide. These of us who’ve carefully watched Alabama this season aren’t positive which group will present up Saturday and it’s not sure that it’ll beat Auburn, so the considered UA stepping into the Playoff is a bit far-flung. But the distant risk exists, I suppose.
This sport means loads. It stands alone when it comes to significance. We’re solely a yr faraway from one of many biggest finishes the collection has ever produced. However the reality is, in most seasons it has that means past state satisfaction. That satisfaction needs to be sufficient for each fanbases to be engaged and I’m steadfast in perception that it will likely be when the sport kicks off. Nonetheless, it’s additionally true that each teams have one eye firmly trying to the horizon for the long run.
For Auburn, Cadillac Williams has been a revelation, a drive of character and sincerity that has swept The Plains after a season and a half of The Bryan Harsin experiment, a sq. peg being pressured right into a spherical gap state of affairs. Followers have been so excited to be rid of him that it mattered hardly who the interim coach was. Williams, although, has unified a fractured fanbase who’d turn out to be apathetic to some extent about Auburn soccer because it awaited Bruce Pearl’s basketball group to take the ground.
Williams, who was already an Auburn legend, will lengthy be remembered for his stint as head coach irrespective of the place his profession takes him. His genuineness leaps off the display and the satisfaction he’s instilled again into this system will make the Tigers tougher to dispatch Saturday.
Nonetheless, the overall feeling about Auburn soccer is to attend until subsequent yr.
For Alabama, it’s an opportunity to see Bryce Younger and Will Anderson for possible the final time in Bryant-Denny Stadium. That in and of itself is historic sufficient to garner your consideration. The season’s been a curler coaster with excessive expectations and closer-than-expected video games. The critiques have been loud and infrequently. From coordinators to extensive receivers, there’s been sufficient criticism to go round. So far as disappointments go, needless to say a “disappointing” season for Alabama is now one during which it nonetheless ranks within the prime 10. The actual fact stays, although, that one of the best win is both over an Ole Miss group that’s misplaced 4 of its final 5 video games, an 8-4 Mississippi State group or a seven-win Texas group.
So for each glass-half-full perspective you’ll be able to paint the season with, there’s a glass-half-empty one which highlights some regarding points. Many have noticed this offseason as key for the way forward for the Alabama dynasty.
For now although, if Alabama wins, it will get to 10 wins for the fifteenth consecutive season. That’s heady stuff.
It’s been not possible to solely deal with the sport this week. Lane Kiffin has been entrance and heart and far of school soccer has been entertained, aside from Ole Miss followers who in all probability want Kiffin would have spent extra time sport planning than roasting a Mississippi television reporter. Kiffin’s antics give and Kiffin’s antics take.
The person nonetheless looms massive to each Alabama and Auburn fanbases. Many Alabama followers nonetheless have a crush on him and his gifted play calling that he showcased for 3 seasons in Tuscaloosa. You possibly can perceive why. He produced three SEC Offensive Participant of the 12 months athletes in Amari Cooper, Derrick Henry and Jalen Hurts. He was the offensive coordinator for 3 consecutive SEC championship groups, one thing that hadn’t been accomplished since Steve Spurrier and the Gators received 4 in a row within the Nineties. Actually Halcyon Days sort of stuff. Even together with his messy departure, he stays a fan favourite. He makes use of Twitter higher than any coach in any sport. The rumors of him going to Auburn stirred some emotions within the Crimson Tide fandom. It’s been a wild week to observe.
The identical will be mentioned of the Auburn aspect. After watching Harsin’s offenses the final two seasons, Tiger followers are drooling on the considered watching Kiffin calling performs inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kiffin utilizing Twitter to troll Nick Saban from the perch of Alabama’s largest rival? The headlines are already writing themselves.
Till he definitively tells Auburn “no,” Kiffin’s title will dangle within the air of this state.
However this sport creates legends. True, it doesn’t have the nationwide that means of Ohio State and Michigan this week, but it surely’s nonetheless Alabama-Auburn. It feels somewhat totally different this yr, however that can change as soon as the sport begins.
Nobody will bear in mind the lead-up to the sport. However they’ll positive as hell bear in mind whether or not Alabama extends the Iron Bowl win streak to a few video games or Cadillac rides off with an upset.

Davis Warren previews Alabama matchup: 'We plan on winning this game'
Michigan has arrived in Tampa, Florida, for its New Year’s Eve kick against the Alabama Crimson Tide in what will be a rematch of last season’s epic Rose Bowl showdown, a game the Wolverines won, 27-20, in overtime.
The Wolverines held their first practice of the trip on Friday after arriving the day after Christmas. Excitement surrounding Michigan’s borderline elite recruiting class is certainly palpable — five-star QB Bryce Underwood is leading the way in that regard — but the team is still preparing for a battle against Alabama.
Before practice began on Friday, key players of the Michigan offense met with reporters to discuss the ReliaQuest Bowl. Starting quarterback Davis Warren talked about the transition from Michigan’s 13-10 win over Ohio State to now preparing for the game against the Crimson Tide.
“You get those couple weeks between Ohio (State) and this game, and you get a chance to reflect a little bit on the season, but I think we’ve taken it in stride and taken it as a real opportunity to get better at football and thinking about things you did during the year, things you did well, things you can improve on, and how you can work on them over these next two to three weeks of practice that we’ve had. … That’s been the goal — just getting better at football and preparing for our opponent while doing it,” Warren said.
Notably, Warren began the year as the starter, but lost his job to Alex Orji after throwing three interceptions against Arkansas State in Week 3. But after experiments with Orji and Jack Tuttle failed, Warren was reinserted as a starter ahead of the Michigan State game.
Warren finished out the regular season strong, capping it off with an emphatic 13-10 win over Ohio State in Columbus.
Still, though, this season marks the first time in four years that the Wolverines are not playing for a national title, and with a star-studded recruiting class coming in, it’s hard for fans not to look ahead to 2025.
But ignoring what fans might be thinking about, Warren says the team isn’t looking past Alabama at all.
“I don’t think we’re overlooking (the game) at all. … As a group, we’re focused on winning this football game,” Warren said. “Michigan needs us to win this game, we want to win this game and we plan on winning this game. So, I know we’re going to take that approach. It’s a really good opportunity for all of us. Man, we’re going to fight tooth and nail to go get a win.”
Michigan will practice on Saturday and Sunday ahead of the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl, which will kick off at Noon ET on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
