U.S. looking to reclaim Arnold Palmer Cup in international competition at Laurel Valley Golf Club
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The 27th Arnold Palmer Cup is up for grabs this week as one of golf’s signature amateur events has arrived at Laurel Valley Golf Club.
The annual Arnold Palmer Cup competition is here in Western Pennsylvania in Westmoreland County just outside of Pittsburgh.
The club, which was established in 1959 has hosted several prominent tournaments including the 1965 PGA Championship and the 1975 Ryder Cup, captained by none other than Arnold Palmer himself.
The annual event, which was reformatted in 2016, pits the best men’s and women’s college golfers from the United States against those from around the rest of the world in a Ryder Cup-style format.
The International team has won 3 of the past 4 matchups and the U.S. will be looking to reclaim the title on U.S. soil.
Each team will consist of 12 men and 12 women with a variety of individual and team matches.
From mixed fourball matches, foursomes, mixed foursomes, and singles, it’s going to be an action-packed three days of top-tier golf at Laurel Valley.
Last year, Franklin Regional graduate and Notre Dame standout Palmer Jackson, named after Arnold Palmer, was a member of the 2022 team which fell short to the International team.

Postgame Takeaways: Cincinnati Reds Beat Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5
The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5 on Monday night at Great American Ball Park.
Both teams are now 37-41 on the season.
Here are our takeaways:
Offensive Fireworks
The Reds trailed 1-0 early on and it was looking like it might be another disappointing day for the offense. Then, the bats came alive. Jonathan India and Elly De La Cruz started the bottom half of the fourth inning with singles. They moved over after a Jeimer Candelario groundout. Spencer Steer doubled to the left-center gap to give the Reds a 2-1 lead. After an infield single from Tyler Stephenson, Stuart Fairchild hit a double to the wall to increase the lead to 4-1. Levi Jordan, making his big league debut, got his first RBI of his career with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Reds weren’t done. In the fifth, India and De La Cruz hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 6-3 ballgame. Steer singled later in the inning to score De La Cruz and increase the lead to four.
In the sixth inning, Jordan got his first MLB hit with a double off the right-field wall. Luke Maile followed with an RBI single. India roped a double off the left-field wall for his third hit of the night that scored Maile. Then, De La Cruz followed with one of the longest home runs you’ll ever see at Great American Ball Park to make it a 11-3 game. Watch the homer here.
Carson Spiers Quality Start
Spiers, facing the Pirates for the second consecutive start, threw six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. He walked a batter and struck out five. Spiers gave the Reds a much-needed quality start. His ERA now sits at 3.45 on the season.

July 4 2024: Fireworks, Events In Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH, PA — Independence Day is fast approaching, so here is the lowdown on the celebration in Pittsburgh.
The city’s Independence Day Celebration will feature free family activities, music, food and entertainment in Point State Park, Liberty Avenue and North Shore.
Kicking off at 4 p.m. activities will include the Clearview Family Fun Zone, Trulieve Veterans Wellness Corner and non-stop musical entertainment on the main stage in Point State Park in addition to the Peoples Food Truck Corral and Sargent Electric Solar Stage along Liberty Avenue.
Across the river on the North Shore, a Fireside DJ will entertain on the PNC Great Lawn,
the location of the RE/MAX hot air balloon and a variety of food concessionaires.
The day’s main attraction, the spectacular Independence Day Fireworks, will begin at 9:35pm. Tune in to 100.1 FM KDKA for a live broadcast of a 25-minute fireworks soundtrack from TJ
the DJ paying tribute to Independence Day. Viewers can watch the celebration from home live on WPXI-TV.
On Independence Day, Americans celebrate the birth of a new nation with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.
During the pivotal summer of 1776, the pre-Revolutionary celebrations honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic break from the crown.
It was an exciting time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress voted to break from the crown and, two days later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the original 13 colonies —New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.
The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.
