PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – While we are on the edge, the powerful ridge of high pressure anchored in the center of the United States continues to be our main weather player here in Western Pennsylvania.

Daily average High: 81 Low: 62
Sunrise: 6:38 a.m. Sunset: 8:09 p.m.

Any Alert Days Ahead?: Nope.

Aware: A couple of back-to-back rainy days are expected Wednesday and Thursday.

The ridge was responsible for triple-digit heat in places like Nebraska and Kansas yesterday. It’s also a key reason why the tropical system ‘Hillary’ hit and rolled along the West Coast, bringing life-threatening flooding to the region. Airflow around high pressure is clockwise. This means the active side, when it comes to rain and storms, is on the edge of the ridge and mainly on the western side, where winds are coming in from the south.

The eastern flank of the high (where we are) can still see rain and showers. The issue is that with winds out of the northwest to north, you generally need a moisture source. I promise I am going to get to a point soon. We now have a chance for rain on Wednesday, as moisture has wrapped around the high and will move in from the northwest on Wednesday. This moisture is part of the remnants of Hillary.

Not all data is picking up on our Wednesday rain chance, but the high-resolution HRRR is, and it is one of my most trusted models. It also updates more often than other models, so I expect other models to grab the rain chance. I am already seeing a change when it comes to our IBM in-house model, which is now also showing rain chances for the day.

Wednesday’s rain chance will be the start of what will now be four days in a row with a chance for rain. Thursday’s rain chance is the highest of the week. Data is pointing at anywhere from a half-inch to a full inch of rain falling region-wide.

Let’s get back to today’s forecast. Highs today should be near 80 degrees. That’s a good 10 degrees or so cooler than yesterday’s weather.

Winds will be out of the north at around 5-10 mph. Skies will start cloudy but will give way to partly cloudy skies for the rest of the day. Morning temperatures bottomed out in the mid-60s in Pittsburgh. Lunch-time temperatures should be in the mid-70s.

Pittsburgh Steelers offense could throw new twist at Ravens in playoff clash

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers will not be benching Russell Wilson against the Baltimore Ravens, but they could use Justin Fields more. Now fully recovered from an abdominal injury he suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged that he is open to using Fields against the Ravens.

The ‘Justin Fields package’ has been talked about extensively this season, but circumstances have consistently pushed back the possibility of Fields getting more involved with a package weekly.

Now, Tomlin says that could certainly happen as Fields is healthy, and the team clearly needs a spark.

“I’m certainly open to utilizing Justin. He has an awesome skillset and we’ve done some of that in the past,” Tomlin said. “We’ve done that less in that last couple of weeks because he experienced an injury that slowed some of that. But in an effort to win this game, I am open to any combination or combinations of divisions of labor in an ability to do so.”

Fields missed two games with an abdominal injury. Before that, the Steelers had used Fields as a runner and, sometimes, a passer, which had mixed results throughout their package’s deployment.

While it seems that Fields will not start against the Ravens, he could see some time where he could make an impact, whether on the ground or through the air.

Sebastian Aho’s overtime goal lifts Hurricanes to 4-3 win over Penguins

CBS News Pittsburgh

Live

Sebastian Aho’s goal at 1:30 in overtime led the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night.

Aho added two assists. Seth Jarvis had two goals and Jalen Chatfield also scored for the Hurricanes, who improved to 3-0 against Pittsburgh this season. Dustin Tokarski had 16 saves for the Hurricanes.

Kevin Hayes, Michael Bunting and Erik Karlsson scored for the Penguins. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 26 shots for Pittsburgh.

The Penguins built a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Hayes and Bunting beat Tokarski for the early advantage.

Aho set up Jarvis’ first goal and then fed Chatfield to tie the game at 2-2 with 7:15 left in the second period. Jarvis made it 3-2 with an assist from Andrei Svechnikov with 3:42 left in the second.

Penguins: Pittsburgh has struggled on the road since a 9-2 win at Montreal on Dec. 12. Production from stars Sidney Crosby (1 goal, 1 assist) and Evgeni Malkin (0 goals, 3 assists) has been scarce in those road losses.

Hurricanes: Falling behind 2-0 in the first period felt like a continuation of Saturday’s 4-0 home loss to Minnesota. Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour is looking for more consistency. The Hurricanes have alternated losses and wins in their past six games.

The Hurricanes penalty kill, second-best in the NHL, held up late in regulation when Chatfield was sent to the box for a delay of game with 3 minutes left in the third period.

Aho’s overtime goal was his 600th career point in his ninth season with Carolina. Jarvis’ second-period assist was the 100th of his career.

The Penguins host Columbus on Tuesday while the Hurricanes travel to Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
