The Steelers took another big postseason step in Week 13 by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals on the road (44-38) in perhaps their best offensive performance of the 2024 season. Pittsburgh rode the right arm of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and his 414 yards with three touchdowns and one interception to a season-high 44 points to hold off Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Seven Steelers were targeted by Wilson at least three times, and he threw touchdown passes to George Pickens, Pat Freiermuth and Calvin Austin III to continue his comeback season in The ‘Burgh.

The Steelers are 6.5-point favorites to beat the Browns in the second round of their AFC North season series, but Cleveland grabbed the first one at home in Week 12 by a 24-19 final score. Nick Chubb ran for the go-ahead touchdown late in snowy conditions in Cleveland as the Browns once again were a much more competitive team with quarterback Jameis Winston calling the shots. The team is in the midst of a forgettable season, but rivalry wins over the Steelers and Ravens (29-24) have helped ease that pain.

Pittsburgh expecting snow overnight into Thursday. Here’s what you need to know to be prepared

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – So this is going to be a technical post. I apologize ahead of time for that.

These types of posts are never easy to read but go a long way toward being the “go back and check what I said” record for those internet lingerers who like to try to get us on “gotchas.”

So let’s get right to it.

  • What’s Going On: An upper low will push another blast of arctic air our way on Thursday, Dec 5th.  We will see a decent amount of snow overnight ahead of the colder air.
You could argue round two begins after that with windy and cold conditions moving in for the remainder of Thursday into Friday.  When it comes to accumulating snow some places may see most of their snow happen during this ‘second event’.
  • How Much Snow Should I Expect?:  Snow totals probably aren’t going to be as big as you would expect and the impact of this storm isn’t just because of the snow.  There’s also a difference in what falls versus what is on the ground.  So if you are south of I-80 but not in the ‘Snow Belt’ of Northern Butler, Armstrong, & Indiana County along with elevated areas, expect around an inch of snow on grassy areas as you wake up Thursday morning.  Snow Belt areas should expect to see 3-5 inches of snow on grassy areas along with an inch or more of snow on hard surfaces.  The Laurel Highlands will see up to 9 inches of snow in spots.  There could be isolated places there that see even more!
  • So Snow Is The Biggest Concern?: Not entirely true.  Yes, we will see snow and in some spots, the snow will be significant.  But that tells only part of the overall story.  Snow along with winds and a cold airmass will make conditions just miserable for those stuck outside.
  • How Long Does This Last? While we will see consistent snow overnight, strong winds and cold temps will be around all day on Thursday into Friday. The Winter Storm Warning for the Laurel Highlands & Ridges goes through 1p on Friday. Winter Weather Advisories go through 7a on Friday. I expect the worst conditions to happen from 3a to noon on Thursday.

Back to today, it’s cold once again with morning temperatures in the mid-20s.

Afternoon temperatures will be very similar to what we saw yesterday with temps in the mid-30s. We won’t cool down tonight ahead of the cold front with temperatures remaining in the mid to upper 30s through 2 a.m. and then rapidly dropping from there.

Rust’s OT winner helps Penguins avoid another late collapse in 5-4 win over Florida

Bryan Rust scored 1:31 into overtime and the Pittsburgh Penguins avoided another late collapse by beating the Florida Panthers 5-4 on Tuesday night.

The Penguins let a three-goal third-period lead evaporate when Florida’s Sam Bennett, Adam Boqvist and Matthew Tkachuk scored within a 4:32 span to pull the Panthers even at 4.

Rust, however, extended Pittsburgh’s winning streak to four by flipping a wrist shot from the right by Spencer Knight for his eighth goal of the season.

Rookie defenseman Owen Pickering scored the first goal of his career for the Penguins, and Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marcus Pettersson also scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry made 37 saves on a night the Penguins spent mostly pinned in their end.

Tkahuck scored twice for Florida, but the Panthers saw their three-game winning streak snapped as Knight stopped just 11 of the 16 shots he faced.

Panthers: Florida dominated everywhere but the scoreboard. If not for a shaky performance from Knight, who was coming off his first shutout of the season, the Panthers would have cruised.

Penguins: the 20-year-old Pickering has more than held his own since making his NHL debut on Nov. 16. His first goal — a shot from the point that threaded its way through traffic — should serve as another confidence boost.

Rust’s winner allowed the Penguins to exhale. It’s been a rocky opening two months for Pittsburgh, which has made a habit of blowing multiple-goal leads. Not this time.

The Penguins have won their last five home games against the Panthers that have gone to overtime.

UP NEXT

The Panthers play at the Flyers on Thursday, and the Penguins visit the Rangers on Friday.
