Penguins announce contingency plan after Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads stolen in California
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Tonight was supposed to be another night at PPG Paints Arena to celebrate Jaromir Jagr, but that celebration will be put on hold.
The Penguins announced this morning that fans in attendance will not be able to get a Jagr bobblehead because the shipment carrying the bobbleheads was stolen after arriving in California.
As a result, they are not in Pittsburgh and cannot be distributed at the game.
“We were shocked to be a victim of cargo theft, and we are working closely with local and federal authorities on the investigation,” said Penguins President of Business Operations Kevin Acklin. “While this unfortunate incident adds to the legend of Jaromir Jagr, who will be in attendance as our guest at tonight’s game, we look forward to resolving this theft and delivering the prized Jagr bobbleheads to their rightful homes, with our fans.”
Instead of the bobbleheads, all fans will get a voucher to redeem for the bobblehead at a later date.
Once the Penguins learned the shipment was stolen, they contacted the manufacturer, as well as state and federal authorities who are now working to locate the shipment.
The location and date for pickup of the bobbleheads will be announced at a later date according to the team.
The Penguins are scheduled to take on the San Jose Sharks tonight at 7 p.m.

Bryan Rust scored 1:31 into overtime and the Pittsburgh Penguins avoided another late collapse by beating the Florida Panthers 5-4 on Tuesday night.
The Penguins let a three-goal third-period lead evaporate when Florida’s Sam Bennett, Adam Boqvist and Matthew Tkachuk scored within a 4:32 span to pull the Panthers even at 4.
Rust, however, extended Pittsburgh’s winning streak to four by flipping a wrist shot from the right by Spencer Knight for his eighth goal of the season.
Rookie defenseman Owen Pickering scored the first goal of his career for the Penguins, and Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marcus Pettersson also scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry made 37 saves on a night the Penguins spent mostly pinned in their end.
Tkahuck scored twice for Florida, but the Panthers saw their three-game winning streak snapped as Knight stopped just 11 of the 16 shots he faced.
Panthers: Florida dominated everywhere but the scoreboard. If not for a shaky performance from Knight, who was coming off his first shutout of the season, the Panthers would have cruised.
Penguins: the 20-year-old Pickering has more than held his own since making his NHL debut on Nov. 16. His first goal — a shot from the point that threaded its way through traffic — should serve as another confidence boost.
Rust’s winner allowed the Penguins to exhale. It’s been a rocky opening two months for Pittsburgh, which has made a habit of blowing multiple-goal leads. Not this time.
The Penguins have won their last five home games against the Panthers that have gone to overtime.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Someone who bought a scratch-off ticket in Allegheny County is heading into the holiday season with a bit of extra cash.
A scratch-off worth $3 million was sold at Nic’s Tobacco on Lincoln Way in White Oak, the Pennsylvania Lottery announced on Tuesday.
The store will get a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning scratch-off, which was a $3,000,000 Golden Ticket. The $30 game offers top prizes of $3 million.
Scratch-offs are distributed randomly, which means the Pennsylvania Lottery doesn’t know where winning tickets will be sold until after a prize has been claimed.
Pittsburghers have recently bought several other big-winning tickets. Last month, a ticket worth $1 million was sold in Mercer County. In October, a $5 million scratch-off was sold at Hollywood Casino at the Meadows in Washington County and one worth $1 million was sold at a gas station in Allegheny County. Another lottery ticket worth $3 million was sold in Westmoreland County in September.
The lottery says scratch-off prizes expire one year from the game’s end-sale date. Winners should immediately sign the back of their tickets and call 1-800-692-7481.
The Pennsylvania Lottery says it’s the only state lottery that directs all its proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. Since ticket sales began in 1972, the lottery says it has contributed more than $36 billion to programs like property tax and rent rebates, transportation and care services.
Although a 41-32 loss the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football” guaranteed the Browns season will end without a playoff game, the team has at least become more competitive and entertaining since Jameis Winston replaced the injured Deshaun Watson as its starting quarterback.
Winston’s boom-or-bust nature was perfectly encapsulated against the Broncos on Monday when he passed for a personal- and franchise-record 497 yards and four touchdowns but also threw three costly interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns.
Maximizing the “good” Winston and minimizing the “bad” one will go a long way to determining if the Browns (3-9) can snap a 20-game regular-season losing streak to the Steelers in Pittsburgh when the teams play at 1 p.m. Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. The losing skid, which dates back to a 33-13 Browns win on Oct. 5, 2003, doesn’t include a 48-37 playoff win on Jan. 10, 2021.
The Steelers (9-3) are coming off a 44-38 win over the Cincinnati Bengals behind Russell Wilson’s 414 yards and three touchdowns passing.
What gives the Browns hope Winston can rise to the occasion against the AFC North-leading Steelers is the fact he did just that on Nov. 21, when he led Cleveland to a 24-19 win over Pittsburgh on “Thursday Night Football.”
That victory narrowed the Steelers’ lead in the all-time series to 81-64-1, but Pittsburgh has still dominated 41-12 since the Browns returned to the NFL.
Each team has a regular contributor who previously played for the other team. Browns linebacker Devin Bush played four seasons with the Steelers after he was their first-round pick in 2019. And Steelers defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi is in his third season in Pittsburgh after playing four seasons for the Browns, who made him a third-round pick in 2017.
In addition, Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth is a Cleveland native, a St. Ignatius and John Carroll graduate, and was University of Akron head coach from 2018 to 2021.
