House Democrat becomes 1st 'Squad' member ever defeated in a primary battle
Two-term Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York has the dubious honor of becoming the first House member of either party to be defeated by a primary challenger so far in the 2024 election cycle.
Bowman also becomes the first member of the “Squad,” a progressive group of diverse House Democrats, to be ousted from Congress.
This after The Associated Press projected that rival George Latimer would defeat Bowman in Tuesday’s Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District – which covers southern Westchester County, in suburban New York City, and a small portion of The Bronx.
“This race was hard-fought, and hard-won,” Lattimer said in his victory speech.
The primary between Bowman, a former middle school principal who four years ago ousted 16-term Rep. Eliot Engel in the Democratic primaries, and Latimer, a Westchester County executive, had already earned a page in the record books as the most expensive congressional primary in the nation’s history.

The contentious battle between a member of the “Squad” and his more moderate challenger spotlighted the Democrats’ deep divisions over the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Bowman, who has been outspoken about his support for Palestinians amid the war in Gaza and has charged that Israel has committed genocide, was targeted by roughly $14 million in spending by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the deep-pocketed pro-Israel group that supported Latimer.

Progressive rock stars Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York supported Bowman and teamed up with the besieged lawmaker at a rally Saturday in The Bronx. The event was anything but a PG-rated spectacle, as Bowman repeatedly used profanities.
“We are going to show f—ing AIPAC, the power of the motherf—ing South Bronx!” Bowman said at the rally, which was held outside the congressional district’s boundaries.
As he conceded on Tuesday night, Bowman made what he called a “public apology” for “sometimes using foul language.”
However, he added that “we should be outraged when a super PAC of dark money can spend $20 million to brainwash people into believing something that isn’t true. We should be outraged about that.”
Speaking with reporters on Monday, Latimer called Bowman’s language “inappropriate. Period.”
Latimer emphasized that “during this campaign I’ve been called a lot of unkind things. I’ve opened up a weekly newspaper in this county and seen myself referred to as genocide George. I’ve had all sorts of claims lobbed at me.”
“I think there’s been a lot of criticism lobbed at me by my opponent that’s unfair and inaccurate,” Latimer argued, “But I don’t think I get it right to use my temper. I don’t think I get the right to curse in public and carry on in a certain way.”

While the Israel-Hamas war was a top issue in the primary, it was not the only one at play.
Bowman, who grabbed plenty of attention during his four years in Congress for his verbal warfare with Republicans and for pulling a fire alarm in a House office building last year during a vote over government funding, was also hit for voting against President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill and against raising the debt limit.
Latimer argued that Bowman had lost touch with constituents in the district.
While knocking off an incumbent is extremely difficult – and has yet to be accomplished by a challenger so far this cycle – Latimer was well known in the district.

Latimer, a former state senator, was endorsed by local mayors and council members, multiple Westchester County legislators and by former Sen. Hillary Clinton. The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee lives close to the district, in northern Westchester County.
He spoke with reporters on Monday at an event where he was endorsed by more than half a dozen diverse clergy leaders from the congressional district.
The ads on behalf of Latimer were also a factor. A record $25 million has been spent by outside groups and the two campaigns to run ads in the district, which is located in New York’s pricey media market, according to Adimpact, a well-known national ad tracking firm.

Bowman, speaking at a campaign event on Monday, said “this race has gotten national attention because it is the ultimate many verses the money race, and we are the many, we are the people.”
Additionally, he argued that “we can not let special interest billionaires…buy this congressional seat.”
Age and race were also at play in the primary battle. Bowman is 48 years old, Black and part of a new generation of rising Democratic Party stars. Meanwhile, Latimer is 70 years old, White and is a politician who spotlights his commitment to old-school retail style politics.
Latimer, taking to social media after delivering primary night victory comments, emphasized that “while this race garnered a lot of headlines, tomorrow we turn a new page. We must come together, united to defend our Democratic values from MAGA extremism.”

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently installed “googly eyes” on five of its trains after a public campaign requested the items be added.
“After receiving public suggestions, our team found a safe way to install these ‘googly’ eyes on a limited number of vehicles – five, to be exact – as part of our ongoing efforts to bring moments of joy to our riders’ daily commutes,” Joe Pesaturo, director of communications at the MBTA, told Fox News Digital via email on Friday, June 28.
The new additions to the trains are one of the many “creative ways” the MBTA is seeking to improve the rider experience, Pesaturo said.

He noted the agency has also staged “in-station musical performances and children’s voice-over announcements.”
“We hope these initiatives, combined with our transit ambassadors’ dedication and our staff’s hard work on infrastructure upgrades, will continue to be a source of community connection and brighten someone’s day,” he said.

The googly eyes are currently on select trains on the MBTA’s Green Line and commuter rail.
The idea to add a most unusual accessory to the MBTA’s trains came as a suggestion from John Sanchez and Arielle Lok, two Massachusetts residents and MBTA riders.

On April 29, Lok and Sanchez organized “a march to advocate for the installation of googly eyes on the front of MBTA trains,” according to an April 30 blog post on Lok’s website recapping the event.

“This vision aims to inject a sense of fun into the daily commute. That is the only purpose of the eyes. There is no hidden or underlying message. We simply want googly eyes on the T,” she said.

In an email shared with Fox News Digital, Lok called the installation of the googly eyes “the best news we’ve ever received in our inboxes.”
She said, “We’re stoked that there was a safe way to stick the eyes on,” she said.
Lok added that it’s “incredible to see this come to life!”
Fox News Digital reached out to Lok for additional comment about the success of the campaign to add googly eyes to trains.

The MBTA’s transit network includes subways, light rail, commuter rail, bus and ferry routes, according to its website.
In 1897, the Tremont Street subway became North America’s first subway tunnel, according to the MBTA.

Justin Timberlake jokingly referenced his arrest for allegedly driving while intoxicated at his tour stop in Boston.
On Saturday (June 29), the 43-year-old singer and actor cracked a one-liner about the incident during his concert at Boston’s TD Garden amid his Forget Tomorrow world tour.
“So, uh, is there anyone here tonight that is driving?” Timberlake asked the cheering crowd in a fan-captured clip posted on TikTok. “No, I’m just kidding,” he quickly added.
The comment drew a mix of gasps and laughter from the crowd. The “SexyBack” followed the wisecrack by asking the audience who’s attending for the first time and who’s seen him before, according to TMZ.
Timberlake was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor, N.Y. on June 17. He was arraigned on one count of “driving while intoxicated” the following day.
“It was ascertained that the defendant was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests,” according to the police report filed by officer Michael Arkinson.
“I had one martini and I followed my friends home,” Arkinson also quoted the 10-time Grammy winner as saying in his report.
Last week, Timberlake broke his silence following the arrest during his show at Chicago’s United Center on June 21.
“It’s been a tough week,” the singer told concert-goers. “I know I’m hard to love sometimes but you keep loving me right back.” He added, “We’ve been together through ups and downs and lefts and rights … but you’re here and I’m here, and nothing can change this moment right now.”
JT’s lawyer Edward Burke Jr. has stated that he will “vigorously” defend the star against the allegations. “He will have a lot to say at the appropriate time,” Burke said in a statement.
Timberlake’s next court hearing is scheduled for July 26, the same day he is scheduled to perform at Tauron Arena Krakow in Poland.
PITTSBURGH — After a mixed year for the Pittsburgh Steelers secondary, it looks as if they are turning their image around this offseason.
The Steelers had just one bright spot in the secondary last season, with Joey Porter Jr. having a superb rookie year. Porter Jr. allowed the lowest completion percentage allowed of any eligible cornerback in the league, finishing the season as a member of the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
After having the second worst passing and rushing defenses in the AFC North, with the Bengals worse in both categories ,the Steelers will look to improve markedly in the coming season.
Daniel Jeremiah, an analyst and insider for NFL Network, believes that the Steelers secondary has a chance to be the best in their division.
Jeremiah’s list was Steelers, Browns, Bengals and then the Ravens.
“Number one, Minkah. Just steady, reliable, the leadership, the production,” he said on his Move The Sticks podcast in which they ranked each division’s secondary groups. “Everything about him I love. I think Joey Porter Jr. is on a rocket ship. I really do. I had a chance to go out and see them in training camp last year…had nothing to do with his dad. This guy just gets it. He looks like a Steeler. He plays like a Steeler. He’s going to be really, really good.”
Jeremiah credits safety Minkah Fitzpatrick as well as Porter Jr. with putting the Steelers atop his list for the AFC North secondary groups. Fitzpatrick will be coming off an injury-shortened season in which he played 10 of a possible 18 games.
The rest of the secondary group is comprised of Donte Jackson, DeShon Elliot, Cam Sutton, Damontae Kazee and Miles Killebrew. Adding in a comeback from injury as well as a player in just his second year, it seems as if the Steelers might not have the best secondary in their division.
When you consider the Browns, who have Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome, Grant Delpit and Juan Thornhill, it seems as if they remain the clear favorite in terms of AFC North secondary groups.
