There are nonetheless a handful of alternatives for the College of Wisconsin to boost its profile, beginning with a matchup in opposition to bubble staff Michigan on Tuesday. Nevertheless, after the shock of being outscored by 27 factors over the ultimate 21 minutes by the Twelfth-place staff within the Huge Ten, it’s honest to marvel if the Badgers have something left within the emotional tank.
Twice constructing a 17-point lead within the early phases of the second half, the Badgers gave all of it again after which some, lacking on a game-winning shot after which getting pummeled in additional time in a 73-63 loss to Nebraska at Pinnacle Financial institution Area.
It’s the worst loss on the match resume for the Badgers (14-10, 6-8 Huge Ten), which was already devoid of marquee wins and rising with winnable video games that molded into losses.
Listed below are my takeaways from Wisconsin’s defeat.

Predictable Late Recreation Consequence
When Chucky Hepburn made a jumper to tie the sport at 61 with 2:44 to go, I joked on social media that followers ought to prepare for his step-back jumper in the course of the sport. I used to be kidding but it surely seems I used to be spot on.
Neither staff scored on their subsequent three possessions, which left Wisconsin with the ball and 31 seconds on the clock. UW known as a timeout with 18.2 seconds left to attract up a play, but it surely doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what UW was going to do. Hepburn has taken the final shot in UW’s two earlier video games with blended outcomes (two misses at Northwestern, a three-point make, and a miss on the buzzer Wednesday at Penn State). This one was one other miss, however the response from his coach and teammate was telling.
Hepburn burned roughly 14 seconds off the clock earlier than making his transfer, a step-back three-pointer from the sting of the middle court docket brand that was off the mark. Virtually instantly because the horn sounded, head coach Greg Gard swung his proper arm throughout his chest at Hepburn and achieve this once more within the huddle, an indication that he wished him to drive with the Badgers within the bonus.
“Get within the paint,” Gard mentioned. “Bought to get within the paint. He had the ball approach out high. Bought to make an effort to get within the paint.”
Huge Ten Community replays confirmed comparable reactions from the bench, with Jordan Davis placing his hand up in a “what are you doing?” transfer and Carter Gilmore nodding his head towards the basket as Hepburn dribbled on the high of the important thing.

Gamers have mentioned that they belief Hepburn to make the proper selections late in video games, and the sophomore is UW’s main scorer and three-point shooter. Nevertheless, the Badgers have develop into too predictable as of late – inbound the ball to Hepburn, watch him dribble, and watch him shoot. UW has been in that scenario thrice within the final week and got here up empty all thrice.
Hepburn has performed essentially the most minutes on the staff (almost 800 minutes), but his 54 free throws are solely third on the staff. A 70 p.c foul shooter, Hepburn has not proven the willingness to drive into contact, selecting step-back perimeter jumpers that haven’t come inside the movement of the offense.
He instructed reporters that he felt there was an excessive amount of visitors within the lane to get a clear shot. The truth that he didn’t dribble as soon as contained in the circle or begin probing gaps till it was too late within the shot clock places some holes in that concept, and the video reveals that just one Nebraska participant was within the paint within the closing seven seconds.
Additional time was Ugly
Wisconsin appeared to select itself off the mat when Tyler Wahl made his first discipline purpose on the primary additional time possession. Issues went south rapidly from there. The Badgers missed their closing seven pictures from the sector however not earlier than their subsequent three possessions resulted in turnovers: Max Klesmit misplaced the ball, Wahl offensive foul, and a foul Hepburn cross. The Huskers scored two factors off every of these turnovers to completely swing momentum, as ahead Derrick Walker (six of his 18 in additional time) made play after play with the Huskers clearing out house and letting him work.
“They’re very momentum driver, and momentum reliant, and we fed them a number of momentum,” Gard mentioned. “Quite a lot of this is because of our undoing and our errors.”

Wisconsin Cannot Hold its Foot on the Fuel
For the higher a part of the final two months, Wisconsin has continually discovered methods to make issues exceptionally exhausting on themselves by failing to shut out video games.
The Badgers surged to a 12-point lead of their Huge Ten opener in opposition to Maryland, solely to present all of it again after which some by the opening minutes of the second half. Wisconsin led by 16 early within the second half at Marquette and 15 within the opening minutes of the second half in opposition to Minnesota, solely to hold on for a pair of three-point victory. Somewhat greater than every week in the past, the Badgers held an 18-point lead 21 seconds into the second half and noticed it lower to 1 within the closing minute.
UW had received all of these above-mentioned video games till Saturday, and the struggles had been team-wide. Connor Essegian was 2-for-11 within the second half and additional time, Steven Crowl and Wahl had been held to 5-for-19 taking pictures as Nebraska used the “Huge Huge Lineup” to defend the 2 within the low publish. It was efficient, as Blaise Keita obtained Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg’s sport ball for his protection on the 2 and 11 rebounds, greater than making up for his two factors on two pictures. Nebraska outscored Wisconsin by 20 when Keita was on the ground.
UW gave up 32 factors within the paint, missed 5 consecutive pictures three separate occasions, went 3-for-19 from three-point vary after halftime (after beginning 6-for-12), and missed approach too many pictures on the rim, partially why the Badgers managed to go simply 4-for-6 from the road (all from Wahl) in comparison with Nebraska going 15-for-23. If the Badgers repair any a kind of issues, they win in regulation.
“Defensively, speak about an entire change of persona within the second half from what we had been the primary half,” Gard mentioned. “Fouling an excessive amount of, an excessive amount of dribble penetration, an excessive amount of of every little thing. Full change of who we had been and who we should be profitable.”
“You’re taking pictures six free throws since you’re not going by means of contact,” he added. “You’re not ending. You’re averted it. You’re falling away, twisting, turning, doing something however take it by means of with some energy by means of the backboard.”
“We obtained what we deserved. I used to be actual brutally sincere with them.”
Klesmit’s Busy Day
Klesmit hasn’t been an offensive drive by any stretch for Wisconsin this season. He’s the one starter not averaging double figures, had solely two discipline objectives within the final two video games, and reached double figures in solely three convention video games.
So, Klesmit reaching double figures within the first 10:17 of the primary half would equate to a shock. Nevertheless, the junior was lively in getting his physique into the paint for jumpers and from the skin in hitting his first 4 pictures.
Whereas his offense surged, Klesmit’s protection remained his huge weapon. Assigned to protect Keisei Tominaga, who was averaging 16.3 factors and 54 p.c taking pictures since changing into a starter on Jan.18, to not point out averaging 27.0 factors his final two video games, Klesmit gave up solely two factors on Tominaga when he was caught chasing following a display. That success led UW to an 11-point lead.

Nebraska simplified its offense within the second half to get Tominaga in rhythm by using easy screens. It labored, as Klesmit was caught and knocked down a number of occasions on screens that allowed Tominaga to get open for three-point makes.
Because of his shot making, the Huskers scored 33 factors over the ultimate 16 minutes of regulation after scoring 28 factors within the first 23 minutes and alter.
“That’s not shocking as a result of that’s how he performs,” Gard mentioned. “He performs off that momentum and so they feed off that momentum, and we didn’t do a adequate job with him.”
The beating evidently took a toll on Klesmit, who was simply 1-for-4 for 2 factors and 4 fouls after halftime.
Gard Should not Be Fired
Followers have been clamoring for a change in this system and are frankly anticipating it after Athletic Director Chris McIntosh fired Paul Chryst after eight seasons and a .656 profitable proportion in October. This loss drops Gard’s profitable proportion to .642 in his eighth season. It’s honest to make parallels.

Nevertheless, I imagine that Gard has earned the proper to make needed repairs. He’s definitely in charge for the development of the roster and this system’s incapability so as to add impactful gamers from the switch portal this previous offseason is obvious. The Badgers lack a real veteran voice within the locker room; acquired little manufacturing from the bench since transferring Essegian to the beginning lineup, which is making the starters run on fumes; and the shortage of depth within the frontcourt has pressured the staff to play smaller, making them inclined to rebounding disadvantages.
I additionally don’t imagine it is a teaching concern as a lot as it’s a participant concern of the shortcoming to stick to factors on the scouting report or factors of emphasis, though one can argue these go hand in hand.
UW was picked to complete seventh within the league and is probably going going to complete a few spots decrease than that and is unlikely to play within the NCAA Match. Even so, the Badgers ought to convey again the vast majority of their roster subsequent season if Wahl chooses to come back again for a fifth yr (barring any surprising switch losses). That can be a very good basis to construct on and UW will add three strong recruits (two forwards) to that combination. Including a high quality huge or two from the portal continues to be vital, as this system received Huge Ten titles the final two occasions it added an skilled ahead from the portal (Micah Potter and Chris Vogt).
If subsequent season is a bust, Gard and his lately reworked $12 million buyout is perhaps considered in a different way. As of now, that’s some huge cash for an athletic division already shelling out buyout cash to a soccer coach and certain a few bucks extra to exchange a males’s hockey coach.

See Milwaukee’s Christmas tree being harvested, delivered and set up
Milwaukee’s Public Works harvested a 64-ft Colorado blue spruce donated by the Yeager Family. The tree was delivered to the plaza outside of Fiserv Forum to serve as the City’s Christmas tree.
Need a Christmas tree now that Thanksgiving is over? Well, look no further than Wisconsin’s public forests.
Many state forests allow you to cut down a tree for personal use — provided you have a permit and follow a few rules.

Here’s how to avoid the naughty list at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Where are the public forests?
Trees can be cut down in the Brule River, Flambeau River, Governor Earl Peshtigo River, Governor Knowles and Northern Highland-American Legion state forests.
Brule River State Forest in Douglas County is home to a lot of balsam fir, a Christmas-tree favorite with its short needles that last long and smell great. Evergreens in this forest also include white pine and white spruce. Mound ranger station, W10325 Highway 12, (715) 284-4103.
Flambeau River State Forest, Winter: Look for white and black spruce, red and white pine, and balsam fir at this forest in Sawyer and Rusk counties just south of the CNNF. W1613 County Road W, Winter, (715) 332-5271.
Governor Earl Peshtigo River, Crivitz: Red, white and jack pines are the predominate evergreens in this forest in Marinette and Oconto counties in northeastern Wisconsin. N10008 Paust Lane, Crivitz, 715-757-3965

Governor Knowles State Forest, Grantsburg: Find jack, white and red pines in this forest along the St. Croix River in northwestern Wisconsin. 325 Highway 70, Grantsburg, (715) 463-2898.
Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, Woodruff: Permits for this forest allow you to harvest a balsam fir, but not within sight of a public road, trail or body of water. Permits are available at the Clear Lake Visitor Station, 8282 Woodruff Road, Woodruff, (715) 356-3668; and the Crystal Lake Visitor Station, 3237 Crystal Lake Road, Boulder Junction, (715) 542-3923.
Holiday tree cutting is not offered at other DNR properties. However, some county forests allow non-commercial harvest of holiday trees, as does the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Contact the forest where you’d like to cut a holiday tree before venturing out so that you know harvesting guidelines.

How much is a permit?
Purchase a permit at the headquarters of each forest. The price may vary slightly from property to property, but the average cost is $5 per tree.
Where can I cut a tree down?
Harvesting is prohibited within 100 feet or visual distance of roads, trails and water, and there is no harvesting from campgrounds or recreation areas, according to the DNR.
Trees must be cut at ground level with a maximum height of 30 feet. Trees taken from state forests cannot be resold.
Check the spongy moth map
Check the spongy moth quarantine map maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection to ensure you don’t travel with your tree out of the quarantined area. The area prohibits items from being shipped that could have the insect or its eggs.
Wisconsin (5-6) will take on Minnesota (6-5) in their final game of the season in a battle for the Axe, as well as bowl eligibility. The Gophers are a team who seem much better than their record after losing by just one point to No. 4 Penn State last week. It’s a rivalry game of course, so the tensions will be high, but it also has many more implications for the Badgers moving forward. So how do we see this one ending up?

After everyone went all in on Wisconsin last week, not all the writers are so quick to choose the Badgers this time around. After an utterly disgustingly display against Nebraska, Wisconsin now has one final chance to reach six wins for the season and become bowl eligible. The stakes are high, but yet our confidence is low, with most of us deciding to go against Wisconsin this week and opt for the Gophers instead.
A loss, and the Badgers will end the season with a losing record and no bowl game, something that hasn’t happened in 23 years. Commitments and jobs will certainly be up in the air if Wisconsin fails to retain Paul Bunyan’s Axe. A win though, and the Badgers will keep the bowl-streak alive. Still, it feels like the season fell a little short of expectations regardless of the outcome in this one, but a win will fix a lot.
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAW) -With the cut of a ribbon, the holiday festivities began in Wisconsin Rapids.
This year, they started the night with a bridge lighting ceremony to celebrate the new lights that were installed on bridges downtown.
Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Matt Zacher says, “It is beautiful, you see it in other cities around the state that have spent the money on making it happen.”
The lights took four months to install and will be a permanent fixture in the community, used for celebrations and events in the future.

Soon, other lights came into view as the holiday parade kicked off. From fire trucks to beloved characters, it’s a perfect holiday tradition.
Brennan Agen, who brought his children to the parade, said, “The excitement in everybody and the holiday spirit just brings cheer to everybody.”
This year, organizers wanted to bring a little extra to the event. From the bridge lighting ceremony, a food truck, and around 70 floats, there was plenty to enjoy. Even a special after party with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Some favorites from the kids were the trucks, and of course, the candy.
