South Dakota teenager Madison Grimm wins Junior Duck Stamp Contest


A South Dakota teen’s artwork has been chosen because the Nationwide Junior Duck Stamp Artwork Contest winner for 2022.

Madison Grimm’s green-winged teal artwork will grace the 2022-2023 Junior Duck Stamp, her third such honor. She beforehand gained the competition in 2013 and 2020. Grimm, who lives in Wallace northwest of Watertown, is 15.

Grimm’s win in 2013 garnered nationwide headlines when she was 6-years-old, setting a report for youngest winner. Per week after being instructed she gained, the award was taken away amid questions of how she had performed the portray at such a younger age. She then had her award restored.

A panel of 5 judges selected the 2022 winner, painted in acrylic, from amongst best-of-show entries from 50 states, Washington, D.C. and two U.S. Territories.

College students in kindergarten via grade twelve take part of their annual state Junior Duck Stamp Program via their faculty, residence, artwork studio or after-school group, or from a refuge, park or nature middle. The highest piece of artwork within the nation – chosen at this annual competitors – is featured on the Junior Duck Stamp, gross sales of which help academic applications and actions that nurture our subsequent era of conservationists.

The primary nationwide Junior Duck Stamp artwork contest was held in 1993. Roughly 2,000 Junior Duck Stamps are bought yearly for $5 every.

This yr, about 13,000 younger artists submitted entries to the Junior Duck Stamp contests across the nation. 

Grimm will obtain $1,000. The second place winner receives $500; the third-place winner receives $200; the Conservation Message winner receives $200.

Man dies in crash with semi near Hot Springs


Fall River County, S.D. – A 26-year-old Hot Springs man died Friday in a collision with a semi-truck near Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Authorities have withheld the names of those involved pending notification of their families.

Preliminary investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates the crash occurred on U.S. Highway 18 near mile marker 25. The driver of a 2003 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound, attempting to pass another vehicle in the same direction. While doing so, the driver lost control of the Honda, veered into the westbound lane, and collided with an oncoming semi.

The driver of the Honda, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver was uninjured.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Officials stress that all details released so far are preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.
