Potential Harris VP pick ripped for ‘weird’ socialism comparison to 'neighborliness'

Published

on

Minnesota’s Democratic Gov. Tim Walz was blasted on social media after telling a group of Democrats that socialism is what some people would call “neighborliness.”

“Don’t ever shy away from our progressive values,” the Minnesota Democrat said on a “White Dudes for Harris” call on Monday night. “One person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness.”

The comment was widely criticized by conservatives on Twitter, including Manhattan Institute senior fellow Ilya Shapiro, who responded on X with “weird,” a reference to recent Democratic attacks against GOP presidential candidate JD Vance and former President Trump.

“Neighborliness killed members of my family,” journalist Karol Markowicz posted on X.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is believed to be a top candidate to be VP for Kamala Harris.

“One person’s gulag is another person’s vacation home,” conservative commentator Ryan James Girdusky posted on X.

“Oozing of desperation from the man who let Minneapolis burn for days,” former Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Mike Murphy posted on X.

“Send this guy to campaign in South Florida,” National Review’s Jim Geraghty posted on X.

“Socialism = ‘neighborliness’ for the freakish Left… Shows how far we’ve fallen that the Governor of one of our states feels free to say this,” American Majority CEO Ned Ryun posted on X.

“Taking people’s stuff at gunpoint doesn’t make you a good neighbor,” Nate Madden, an adviser to Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, posted on X.

Fox News Digital reached out to Walz’s office for comment but did not receive a response.

Walz is widely believed to be on VP Kamala Harris’ short list for vice president and it was reported Tuesday that she is expected to make her decision by next week.

“Whether he makes it or not, there’s no doubt MN Gov. @Tim_Walz is running the most aggressive campaign for VP in the field,” former Obama adviser David Axelrod said this week.

Detroit Tigers Call Up Two Intriguing Relievers

Detroit Tigers Call Up Two Intriguing Relievers

The Detroit Tigers were busy at this year’s deadline, most notably dealing Jack Flaherty.

However, after also trading away Andrew Chafin, the Tigers are replacing him with two different relievers. Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports the team is calling up Brenan Hanifee and Sean Guenther to fill those bullpen duties.

Hanifee made his Major League debut in 2023 with Detroit, pitching in three games in September. He threw five innings, mostly in mop up duty, while allowing three runs and striking out three batters. He was sent back to Triple-A for 2024 season where his numbers are better than they might look on the surface.

The 26-year-old has made 34 appearances for Triple-A Toledo where he’s thrown 47 innings with one save. The right hander has posted a 5.17 ERA, but his 3.86 FIP suggests that he is getting pretty unlucky. He has also shown the ability to miss bats, posting a 10.1 K/9. Maybe most notably, Hanifee has a good feel for control, walking only 2.7 batters per nine this season.

His good control is nothing new, as he walked just 3.0 batters per nine in 90.1 innings in 2023. However, his strikeouts are up from last season’s mark of 8.3 per nine, suggesting his ceiling could continue to get higher.

Guenther is the other addition to the Tigers’ bullpen.

The 28-year-old hasn’t pitched in the Majors since appearing in 14 games for the Miami Marlins in 2019. With them, he threw 20.1 innings while striking out 15, walking 10 and posting a 9.30 ERA.

Since his time in the big leagues, the lefty pitched in the Marlins system in 2021 before missing 2022 with an arm injury and being claimed by Detroit that offseason.

Guenther pitched across three levels in 2023, pitching in 39 games where he posted a 3.55 ERA while striking out 62 and only walking 12 in 50.2 innings. This allowed him to be assigned to Triple-A after a Spring Training invite in 2024, where he has been a work horse so far.

In 44.1 innings this year, he has posted a 3.86 ERA to go along with a 9.3 K/9 and just a 2.8 walk per nine rate. Like Hanifee, he has a good feel for the strikezone and doesn’t walk many batters.

With the loss of Chafin, who had been the Tigers most reliable reliever, they were in need of help in the bullpen.

Now, both Hanifee and Guenther will get an audition to earn a role in a Tigers bullpen that is in need of an upgrade.

Robbery crew targeting Milwaukee’s Riverwest, Upper East Side, two in custody

Milwaukee police are investigating a robbery crew that has targeted the city’s Riverwest and Upper East Side neighborhoods.

In an email statement, Milwaukee Police Department said that a robbery crew had targeted those neighborhoods and they had arrested an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old in connection to it. Police said they are looking at the crew for several robberies in the area.

The robberies also occurred as a series of July 24 robberies in the downtown area during a Northwestern Mutual event.

The police said in a statement that those robberies occurred around midnight on the 300 block of South 2nd Street, the 200 block of West National Avenue and the 500 block of North Plankinton Avenue.

Local television station WITI-TV (FOX6) reported that a police captain had asked a private security group for help in response to the crew in an email.

Milwaukee police declined to immediately make the email available to the Journal Sentinel. The Journal Sentinel filed an open records request for the email.

Milwaukee police said it was currently unknown if the crew targeting Riverwest and Upper East Side is tied to the downtown robberies.

Authorities said they are not sharing further details on the robbery crew as they continue to seek additional suspects. Charges have not been filed, police said.

This year there have been 1,121 robberies, through July 31, according to Milwaukee police data. That’s a 6% increase from last year and 7% from 2022.

Le Creuset’s Secret Supper Collab is Coming to Minneapolis | Minnesota Monthly

Unique dining experiences have a strong grip on the Twin Cities’ culinary scene—lines form out the doors of coffee shops and eateries for Dahlia’s rotating pastry pop-ups; food halls offer an all-in-one sampling of local flavors; the list goes on. So, it’s no surprise that Minneapolis is one of just three locations selected to host La Carte by Le Creuset, a brand-new dinner series collaboration with culinary events company Secret Supper.

The La Carte series is headed to Minneapolis on Sept. 12, preceded by Santa Barbara, California, on Aug. 8, and the sold-out inaugural event in New York City on June 20. These immersive dining experiences are an extension of Secret Supper’s already well-established “Supper Series,” with the addition of Le Creuset’s iconic cookware and tablescapes.

Here’s how it works: Attendees purchase tickets knowing only the event date and the closest major city to the venue. Coordinates for the supper location are sent out 24 hours before the event, but the menu and bespoke details remain a secret until guests sit down at the table.

The company typically works with renowned local chefs in each area to curate a regionally inspired menu with sustainable ingredients. At the last Minneapolis supper in January, Chef Yia Vang (of Union Hmong Kitchen and Vinai) curated three courses of Hmong cuisine alongside Basil Hayden cocktails and wine pairings at The Neu Neu in the North Loop. For dessert, the menu featured an inventive twist on the classic Minnesotan bake sale platter, with Miso scotcharoos, Szechuan coffee brownies, and Thai tea custard bars.

This tradition continues in the La Carte series, and while the upcoming Minneapolis chef will remain under wraps, a few prominent names come to mind: Will dinner guests be greeted with Korean American fusion from Chef Ann Kim? Or perhaps they will enjoy Southeast Asian dishes by Chef Christina Nguyen, who won the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest.

The series kicked off with a bang at the New York City event in June. Guests were welcomed to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Boathouse with live music, drinks, and waterfront views before sitting down for a family-style dinner by private chef and cookbook author Gaby Dalkin. The fresh summer menu featured dishes like Stone Fruit Peach and Nectarine Panzanella, Charred Corn Summer Alpine Flatbread, and Grilled Tomahawk Steak.
