MPD: Homicides down for 2nd straight year

Preliminary Milwaukee Police Department data for 2024 shows homicides dropped for a second year in a row but are still up from pre-pandemic numbers.

MILWAUKEE – Preliminary Milwaukee Police Department data for 2024 shows homicides dropped for a second year in a row but are still up from pre-pandemic numbers.

According to MPD, the number of homicides dropped by nearly a quarter, from 172 in 2023 to 131 in 2024. The city saw a record number of homicides in 2022.

MPD crime data for 2024 also showed non-fatal shootings were down about a quarter, while carjackings were up 11%. Totals for 2024 are as of Sunday, Dec. 29 and can change as cases are investigated.

Homicide review

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Constance Kostelac leads the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission.

“Any life that is lost is too many lives lost, but the trend that we are seeing is an encouraging trend compared with what we’ve seen for a number of years,” she said.

The commission’s review of 116 homicides, up to November 2024, found:

81% of the victims were black, 17% were white; one victim was American Indian, one was Asian
85% of victims were male, about 15% were female
17 victims were 17 years old or younger; 40 victims were 18-29 years old; 21 victims were 30-39 years old; 26 victims were 40 to 49 years old; 12 victims were 50 years old or older
81% of suspects were black, about 17% were white; one suspect was American Indian, one was Asian
92% of suspects were male, roughly 8% were female
About 44% of victims knew the killer, about 31% were strangers

2024 Milwaukee homicide scene

The Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission found the most common cause of a homicide was shootings; guns were used in 90% of homicides.

“We are seeing more concentrated and collaborative efforts happening across different both government and community-based organizations,” said Kostelac. “We always want to be careful not to stigmatize areas, but there’s been concentrated efforts in some of the neighborhoods and parts of the city that have been historically disproportionately impacted, and we are seeing a bigger drop in those areas than what we are seeing citywide.”

What’s next

After lost lives and snuffed out dreams, a new year gives the city a chance for a new start.

“Continuing to focus on youth gun violence and ways to reach young people in a way to resonate with them to talk about peace,” Kostelac said. “Continuing to focus on how do we reach young men that may be at risk of involvement in violence or may have had prior experience with violence, which is the focus of many of the community-based programs, that’s a very important connection to make.”

On Tuesday evening, the Milwaukee Bucks will host the Cleveland Cavaliers in Wisconsin.

The Bucks are coming off a 134-123 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 31 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists while shooting 11/22 from the field in 23 minutes of playing time.

For Tuesday’s game, the Bucks have announced that Antetokounmpo will be listed as questionable on the injury report.

Eric Nehm of The Athletic wrote: “The Bucks have submitted their first injury report for Tuesday’s game vs. Cleveland.

Antetokounmpo is in the middle of his 13th season (all with the Bucks).

The two-time MVP is averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists per contest while shooting 62.4% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range in 36 games.

The NBA wrote (on Sunday): “Giannis passes Oscar!

The Bucks are the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 28-39 record in 67 games.

They have won two out of their last ten games (and are 16-18 at home).

Following the Cavs, the Bucks will play their next game on Thursday night when they visit the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.

On the other side, the Cavs are the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with a 41-27 record in 68 games.

They have won five out of their last ten games.

Blizzard conditions, heavy snow to continue through Monday in Milwaukee area

Blizzard conditions are continuing through the morning Monday, March 16, in southeast Wisconsin, and several additional inches of snow are expected to fall.

People should only travel in emergencies, and they should not get out of their vehicle if stranded, the National Weather Service said. Gusty winds and blowing snow mean visibility will be less than 1/4 mile, the weather service said.

The blizzard warning is in effect until 4 p.m. March 16. Snowfall rates of a half-inch to 1 inch an hour are forecast to continue through mid-morning across southern Wisconsin. Winds of 40 to 45 mph are expected. Blowing snow will make travel difficult even after the heavy snow stops, the weather service said.

Much of southern Wisconsin could see another 4 to 8 inches of snow throughout the day, while cities north of Milwaukee, like Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and Sheboygan could see another 6 to 10 inches. Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha and other lakeshore communities are expected to see 3 to 5 inches fall.

Dozens of area school districts cancelled classes Monday.

The snow will taper off in the southwest first and the northeast later. Snow in Madison could stop around 10 to noon, while it’s expected to gradually decrease and stop after 4 p.m. in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties.

Temperatures in Milwaukee will go from roughly 21 degrees the morning of March 16 to single digits the morning of March 17. That means wet roads after the snow ends may refreeze going into March 17.

The blizzard conditions March 16 follow a day of extraordinary snowfall in north-central Wisconsin. Crivitz had 25 inches of snow, Sister Bay counted 24 inches, Suamico and Wausau each recorded 23 inches, and Osseo saw 21 inches, according to the weather service.
