JJ Fish and Chicken Milwaukee shooting; plea deal reached, teens accused

MILWAUKEE – A plea deal has been reached for the two then-teens accused in the fatal shooting of a man at JJ Fish and Chicken in Milwaukee in January 2023.

Javontae Jones pleaded guilty on Wednesday, Aug. 14 to a charge of first-degree reckless homicide. By doing so, Jones avoids a trial. Jones is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 2.

Jones was accused along with his cousin, Jeffrey Coleman in the Jan. 1, 2023 shooting at the restaurant, court filings say. Coleman pleaded guilty on Monday, Aug. 19 to first-degree reckless homicide. He is set to be sentenced on Oct. 31.

Case details

According to a criminal complaint, Milwaukee police responded to the JJ Fish and Chicken restaurant near 33rd and Villard on Jan. 1, 2023, to investigate a homicide. Investigators found the victim on the floor at the restaurant – he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives spotted numerous cartridge casings, bullets and bullet strikes in the restaurant. Outside in the parking lot, they located a deformed bullet and three cartridge casings.

The criminal complaint indicates exterior surveillance video was recovered from the restaurant. It shows a person get out of a vehicle and walk into the restaurant. Two other persons from a second car did the same. After about a minute, all three persons are seeing running out of the restaurant, getting into cars, and fleeing the scene. One of the persons is seen firing a gun – “based upon an observed muzzle flash,” the complaint says.

Surveillance video from inside the restaurant shows a man enter the restaurant and approach the counter with a gun tucked into his waistband, the complaint says. About a minute later, the victim and another person walked into the restaurant – and seconds after that, two other persons walk into the restaurant. A gun was pulled by the first person who entered the restaurant, and he “fires” at the victim and the person he was with, the complaint says. That person then pulled a gun – and he fired toward the front door. The complaint says two people “then fire numerous gunshots toward each other.”

After this incident, detectives were made aware that multiple juvenile shooting victims were en route to the emergency department at Children’s Wisconsin. Among them was the defendant, Jones, the complaint says.

Investigators later identified Jones via fingerprints, the complaint says. Two other persons also identified Jones from a photo array. An officer later identified Coleman from a surveillance image of the shooting.

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating a critically missing 71-year-old woman.

Police said Orelia Rose McDowell was last seen near 38th and Nash on foot at approximately 5:30 p.m.

McDowell is described as 5 feet, 3 inches tall, around 157 pounds and with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a tan jacket, pink shirt, pink pants and pink Puma tennis shoes.

A Silver Alert was also issued.

Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Orelia is asked to call MPD – District 7 at 414-935-7272.

At least two apartments damaged in fire on Glenbrook Road near Northridge Mall

A least two apartments were damaged in a fire on Glenbrook Road near Northridge Mall in Milwaukee.

Firefighters are still working to determine a cause, but say no one was injured other than a firefighter who cut his hand.

Fire leaves significant damage to Milwaukee apartment building.

Investigators are still determining the extent of the damage to the apartment building. They’ve told TMJ4’s Mikenzie Hammel that the fire appears to have started in a second-story unit and that the flames damaged the apartment directly above it.

Residents in the building tell Mikenzie the entire hallway was filled with smoke.

A Milwaukee man was charged in connection to a fatal shooting at a youth flag football game, but new details have emerged regarding the incident.

MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee man was charged in connection to a fatal shooting at a youth flag football game, but new details have emerged regarding the incident.

That shooting happened in mid-October at Milwaukee Public Schools’ South Stadium.

47-year-old Raysean Barnes died.

Through open records FOX6 News obtained, there are new details about the case. It explains how surveillance and cell phone records led to charges.

Investigators say he was at the game to watch a loved one play when he got from the stands and headed to the parking lot to get a child a drink of water. As he walked from the bleachers, he got caught in the middle of a fight.

Prosecutors say 30-year-old Gavino Avalos-Morales pulled out a gun, pointed it at Barnes and shot him in the chest. He died at the hospital.

Investigators learned through interviews the accused gunman was never supposed to be at the game.

An acquaintance said Gavino-Avalos gave him a ride and followed him inside with another man. Minutes later, an argument began and shots were fired.

Surveillance video showed the suspect running away, but more importantly, arriving in a white Mazda CX-9.

Police were able to track the vehicle back to the accused shooter. They arrested the 30-year-old four days later.

When he was taken into custody, police searched his cellphone and discovered he was contacted by criminal defense attorneys in the days after the shooting. He also texted a loved one that his life was over.
