Go Iowa Awesome – The Hyball: Brick City

The Hyball is a weekly basketball column

“It is a ‘miss or miss much less‘ league.”

Whereas attending the Iowa-Northwestern sport this previous Sunday with my school roommate and his brother, I made this joke round halftime. If we solely knew what the following three halves would appear like.

Iowa is 6/52 from three in its final two video games.

Six for fifty-two.

When regular basketball video games flip into rock fights like that, it is laborious not to consider Greg Popovich’s 2018 quote on three pointers:

“I hate it, however I at all times have,” Popovich mentioned of the shot. “I’ve hated the three for 20 years. That’s why I make a joke on a regular basis [and say] if we’re going to make it a unique sport, let’s have a four-point play. As a result of if all people likes the three, they’ll actually just like the 4. Folks will soar out of their seats when you’ve got a five-point play. Will probably be nice. There’s no basketball anymore, there’s no magnificence in it. It’s fairly boring. However it’s what it’s and you might want to work with it.”

Now, I do not truly consider this… however I positive did take into account believing in it watching the offense careen off the rails these final two video games.

Certainly one of my first columns of this season was titled “Candy, Valuable Offense.” The premise was, win or lose, Iowa was nonetheless going to place up factors. Turns on the market ought to have been a caveat there…

We have to get this staff again to Iowa Metropolis earlier than the brick home turns right into a brick skyscraper.

The Hyball

“I am not a nerd. I am a jock who’s too cool for sports activities.”

Final Week

2/16 – Iowa 92, Ohio State 75: Manner again within the halcyon days of Iowa males’s 2022-23 basketball, Iowa hit double digit threes in a sport. That mentioned, 10/27 is not precisely the gorgeous sport incarnate (good for 37%).

2/18 – Northwestern 80, Iowa 60: As I discussed above, was at this sport, so we’re gonna dive in with some bullet factors…

– This was a type of video games that simply felt over from the soar; Iowa gave the impression to be down 7-15 factors your complete time

– Keegan picked an effective way to spend his all-star break

– Northwestern’s new stadium is admittedly nice; could not rec going extra; there may be not a nasty seat in the home

– Talking of… they’ve a scene there, man. I went in December 2018 for Michigan-Northwestern, and the ambiance itself was wonderful, but it surely’s evening and day in comparison with the sport we noticed this week. They’ve a DJ (who one way or the other integrates music nicely and does not take away from the fan expertise), and the world bought so loud, at one level my buddy puzzled if he ought to’ve introduced earplugs. All glory to the scholars for lastly making a semblance of a sports activities tradition there. They have been Cameron Crazies degree with custom-made chants, hitting poor Kris with a “Keeg-an’s Wager-ter” chant all through the sport (double sting once we realized Keegan was in the home) and the McCaffery brothers with a “The place’s-your dad-dy?” chant after, nicely…

– It actually does really feel particular when your staff’s coach will get ejected when you’re within the constructing, watching them battle; it is like he is an avatar for all your frustrations; and, earlier than you suppose I am exaggerating, it was one of many few instances all sport have been each Iowa fan in my part stood up and clapped in unison; thanks, Fran.

2/22 – Wisconsin 64, Iowa 52: Be sincere, you are kinda stunned we cracked 50, proper? After Iowa misplaced as highway favorites in opposition to Northwestern and I held off on betting, I wasn’t gonna make the identical mistake vs. Sconnie. When the unfold that morning got here out as Iowa -1.5, I pounced in seconds. Want each emotional hedge attainable when watching basketball on the Kohl Middle.

That is tweet is definitely from 2011, but it surely’s an evergreen remark, actually.

This Week

2/25 – Iowa vs. Michigan State: In honor of the Gold Out, perhaps Iowa can goal to shoot 49% from three (larger additionally works).

2/28 – Iowa at Indiana: Who’s prepared to return on the highway?!

Rafters Ring

My uncle despatched me this (on Fb, after all), and regardless of all aversions to watching a 6-minute plus music video, it was riveting. Think about:

– Collins rocking the headset mic

– Collins rocking enterprise informal

– Collins spending many of the video on the entrance of the stage earlier than sauntering over to the deserted drum equipment to play the long-lasting fill round 4:25

– Additionally that is the bassist

June of 1990. What a time.

Compulsory Michigan Part

After M defeated MSU in a really emotional outing following the taking pictures on the East Lansing campus, I discovered myself actually wanting a win for Sparty of their subsequent sport. Fortuitously, Mady Sissoko bought the message loud and clear.

That, pals, is a eternally spotlight.

How lengthy do you suppose it takes her to say “ESS EE SEE” on this video?

Wrapping It Up…

(Making an attempt to diplomatically reconcile the cavalcade of missed threes with our normal love for Iowa basketball.)

Colley’s Method was created by Wes Colley, Ph.D., an astrophysicist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He devised his algorithm to help address the subjectivity and controversy regarding BCS college football selections in the 1990s and early 2000s, using a method that used no subjective variables.

Iowa Coach Fires Brutal Quote at Players Leaving Via Transfer

The Iowa Hawkeyes lost two players from their football team this week.

Both running back Leshon Williams and wide receiver Kaleb Brown have announced that they will redshirt for the rest of the season and enter the transfer portal at the end of the year.

Despite the two players opting to leave the program, it hasn’t phased head coach Kirk Ferentz. He isn’t worried about the decisions that they made at all.

When asked about Williams and Brown transferring, Ferentz offered a short and brutal quote.

“Not to be callous, but if a player isn’t playing, you don’t lose much.”

Williams had been dealing with an injury throughout the season thus far. Before the injury, he had shown flashes of being a player that could end up making an impact. Unfortunately, those flashes were never able to come to light on the field.

As for Brown, there were big plans for him coming into the season. But, he was suspended for the first game of the year and was never able to earn his role back.

Clearly, Ferentz is not worried about how his team will respond to the news. Basically, he doesn’t think the losses of them will impact the team at all.

Ferentz isn’t necessarily wrong with what he stated. Neither player had a role that will change how the team has been operating. However, it was the way he said it that was a bit out of line.

Regardless of the role that they players had, handling the situation with a bit more grace would have been a better look.

All of that being said, Iowa is not a program that needs to be graceful necessarily. The Hawkeyes want to win football games and neither Williams or Brown was contributing to that goal so far this year.

Looking ahead to the future, we wish the best to both Williams and Brown. Hopefully, they find success in their future endeavors.
