NFL analyst says Indianapolis Colts could trade former Day 2 pick | Sporting News

One of the main storylines to watch at Indianapolis Colts training camp will be the battle between wide receivers Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell.

As Pierce enters his third season in the NFL, he will have a major challenge fending off Mitchell, the team’s second-round pick during the 2024 draft.

With his back against the wall, there’s a chance Pierce loses his starting role to the rookie standout. If that happens, a potential trade wouldn’t be completely out of pocket.

That’s why Anthony DiBona of Pro Football Network believes Pierce could be on the block in 2024.

While Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs have shown plenty of potential for the Indianapolis Colts, Alec Pierce has failed to do the same. Which is likely why the Colts selected Adonai Mitchell in the 2024 NFL Draft. Pierce is likely fourth on Indianapolis’ wide receiver depth chart and could be on the move this season.

While it’s unlikely the Colts would wind up trading Pierce, there is the understanding that this may be his final chance at securing a significant role in an NFL offense.

He’s flashed some upside as a deep threat, but the production hasn’t been there. According to Pro Football Focus, Pierce ran the eighth-most routes (605) among all wide receivers in 2023. His 0.85 yards per route run ranked 12th-worst among qualified receivers.

If Pierce fails to fend off the electric rookie for his starting role, there’s always a chance the Colts look to get something for him if the opportunity presents itself.
