SHOALS, Ind. (WISH) — An Odon man was arrested by troopers after a vehicle pursuit on Saturday evening, Indiana State Police said in a news release Sunday.

Steven A. Kiser, 61, of Odon, Indiana, was arrested and preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement with a motor vehicle (level 6 felony), leaving the scene of a property damage crash (B misdemeanor), and reckless driving (C misdemeanor).

At 8:15 p.m. Saturday, an ISP trooper initiated a traffic stop on a 2019 Buick passenger car on U.S. 50 near 2nd Street in Loogootee for going 51 mph in a 35-mph zone. The driver of the Buick, later identified as Kiser, did not stop, and led the trooper on a vehicle pursuit with speed over 80 mph. The chase continued into Daviess County, where the Buick left the roadway and ran over a mailbox. The Buick turned around and drove back into Loogootee. The vehicle pulled into a church parking area and came to a stop.

Kiser was taken into custody without incident.

The lawsuit accuses Cash App of failing to have proper security controls in place and not responding to concerns about fraudulent transactions happening on the app.

Vicki Kirkwood: Indiana woman with dementia who went missing from Lake County Fair found dead

A Merrillville woman who went missing on Tuesday from the Lake County Fair has been found dead.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the body of Vicki Kirkwood was located in a pond in a residential area in the 900 block of Mary Ellen Drive in Crown Point on Wednesday.

Woman dies at O’Hare Airport after becoming trapped in machinery

A woman died Thursday morning at O’Hare International Airport after becoming trapped in machinery in Terminal 5.

An employee discovered the 57-year-old woman deceased while inspecting the baggage handling area at 7:45 a.m. Chicago police say their investigation has uncovered video showing the woman entering an unoccupied restricted area at 2:27 a.m. It is still unknown if the woman was a passenger.

Burglars steal over $1M in jewelry from Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall

Schaumburg police are investigating a brazen burglary at Marquise Jewelers inside Woodfield Mall, where over $1 million in jewelry was stolen during the overnight hours of Aug. 1.

The suspects gained entry to the closed jewelry store by cutting through the drywall of an adjacent vacant unit, according to police. The break-in was discovered at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, when a construction worker entered the vacant space and noticed the damaged drywall.

New research directed at earlier detection of Alzheimer’s disease has produced a more promising method for diagnosis.

It was unveiled last week at an international conference of experts who study and treat Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The blood test appears to be able to detect the disease earlier than traditional procedures. An early diagnosis means a boost in recruitment for clinical trials and fewer wait times for disease assessment.

Natalie Sutton, executive director of the Greater Indiana chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said researchers are optimistic.

“This actually showed that the blood test was about 90% accurate in identifying Alzheimer’s in patients with cognitive symptoms,” Sutton pointed out. “They were being seen in primary care and at memory care clinics.”

In comparison, the study found primary care physicians were 63% accurate and specialists were 73% accurate in diagnosing the disease without the blood test. Sutton added more trials are needed on a larger and more diverse population to ensure the blood test’s accuracy. About 121,000 Hoosiers age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association said by age 45, the risk of developing the disease is about one in five for women and one in 10 for men. Sutton applauded the work of Indiana scientists and said more than 100 pieces of research from the Hoosier State were presented at the conference. One drug they have tested was found to have a significant effect on vital brain functions.

“One study tested liraglutide in people with mild Alzheimer’s dementia,” Sutton outlined. “The study showed that the drug reduced shrinking by nearly 50% in some of the parts of the brain that affect memory, learning, language and decision-making, when compared to a placebo.”

The website Medscape mentioned a study showing liraglutide was also found to help diabetics manage their weight loss while lowering their risk of heart and kidney disease. Almost 13,000 doctors and scientists attended the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Philadelphia.​
