Illinois
Editorial: For Illinois House: Eva-Dina Delgado, Lilian Jimenez, La Shawn Ford, Ann Williams, Margaret Croke, Hoan Huynh
In Springfield’s post-Michael Madigan period, how a lot of a dent can Republicans make into the viselike grip that Democrats have on the Illinois Home of Representatives? To what extent will candidates’ stances on pivotal nationwide points resembling abortion, gun management and inflation maintain sway in these races?
Of the Home’s 118 seats, 78 function contested races. Right here’s the primary installment of the Tribune Editorial Board’s endorsements for Illinois Home contests. We start with Chicago’s third District, which incorporates the largely Latino Belmont Cragin neighborhood and components of different Northwest Aspect communities.
Invoice Clinton was president the final time this district had a contested race within the basic election. In 1996, Democrat Miguel Santiago beat Augusto Montijo, and since then Democrats haven’t had an opponent. Till now. Democratic incumbent Eva-Dina Delgado faces Republican Jonathan Serrano, who owns a monetary providers follow.
Delgado has been a lot better for this district than her predecessor, Luis Arroyo, who earlier this yr was sentenced to almost 5 years in jail for attempting to bribe a state senator and was referred to by U.S. District Choose Steven Seeger as a “corruption superspreader.” Delgado has sponsored laws to fight Chicago’s carjacking epidemic, together with a invoice that ramps up funding for legislation enforcement to go after the issue. She additionally was one in all 19 Democratic lawmakers who voted towards preserving Michael Madigan as Home speaker. Her résumé earlier than Springfield contains jobs as chief of workers for the top of Peoples Fuel, vice chairman of legislative affairs on the CTA and legislative counsel for Mayor Richard M. Daley.
Serrano, 36, accurately says that the anchor to any plan geared toward fixing Illinois’ dismal monetary outlook is a pension reform referendum that will ask voters to amend the Illinois Structure to cut back future profit progress whereas leaving present earned advantages untouched. We predict Serrano has a future in state politics, however Delgado is the higher alternative. She is endorsed.
Democrat Lilian Jimenez says the Madigan investigation uncovered the hazard of permitting company giants like ComEd to wield a lot affect in state politics. “Codifying restrictions on company contributions to political campaigns will likely be a serious step towards limiting corruption,” she instructed us. The 44-year-old lawyer from Humboldt Park has a powerful résumé. She is director of the Workplace of Welcoming Facilities for Immigrant and Refugee Providers on the Illinois Division of Human Providers, and beforehand labored as chief of workers for Jesus “Chuy” Garcia when he was a Prepare dinner County commissioner, and director of the honest labor requirements division on the Illinois Division of Labor. She is working towards Republican J.D. Sloat, a 34-year-old industrial actual property dealer who desires to cap property taxes for owners. We promote Jimenez.
Democratic incumbent Sonya Harper has held this seat since 2015. She is a former tv information producer and reporter, and joint chairperson of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. She has not responded to our requests to be taught extra about her coverage positions. Her opponent, Republican Leonard Griffin, is a truck driver who says the reply to reforming the troubled Illinois Division of Kids and Household Providers is to eradicate the company. That’s not a tenable resolution. We make no endorsement on this race.
In 2012, Home Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch received the Democratic main for this west suburban district by a razor-thin margin of 36 votes, defeating fellow Democrat Rory Hawkins. Since then, he has had no competitors in each seventh District race aside from the 2016 main, when he beat Chris Harris. Welch was a longtime ally of Madigan, his predecessor as speaker and now a defendant in an upcoming federal trial on corruption costs.
The west suburban Hillside lawmaker might have distinguished himself from the Madigan period by pushing for a decennial remap that, for as soon as, was not a behind-closed-doors train in making certain Democratic Social gathering dominance for years to return. He might have remembered the op-ed he penned in 2016 that known as for an unbiased fee that will transfer Illinois away from a remap course of that “usually has been criticized as too political and one the place voters are left with no voice.” His phrases, not ours.
Alas, Welch and fellow Democrats duped voters once more, and handed a remap that ensured one-party rule in Springfield. His opponent, Republican Eddie Kornegay of Forest Park, is a director of a group reentry program for inmates who says Illinoisans “deserve a contemporary begin and new starting in management in Springfield.” We make no endorsement on this race.
On many fronts, Democratic incumbent La Shawn Ford’s views hew carefully to ours. He backs a referendum that will ask voters to amend the Illinois Structure to reform the state’s damaged pension system by lowering future profit progress to reasonably priced ranges whereas leaving alone present earned advantages. He additionally helps having voters resolve, by a referendum, whether or not to amend the state structure to overtake Illinois’ decennial redistricting course of in order that residents get a seat on the desk for future legislative remaps. He desires to provide Illinoisans tax reduction by a property tax freeze and sees advantage in whittling down the roster of taxing districts within the state — Illinois proper now has practically 7,000 models of native authorities.
His GOP opponent, Thomas Hurley, is a retired monetary crimes investigator from LaGrange Park and a former village trustee for that western suburb. Ford is endorsed.
Democrat incumbent Ann Williams has capably served this district, which incorporates components of the Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods, since 2011. Vying for a seventh time period, Williams, 54, has a powerful dialogue with eleventh District constituents, and was one of many 19 Home Democrats who refused to again Madigan for one more time period as Home speaker.
The Republican within the race, Marc James, 61, works in lodge administration and says he’s the fitting alternative as a result of “I’m not serious about a profession as a politician … I’m sufficiently old that I don’t care about making political niceties on the expense of presidency debt.” We promote Williams.
Two millennials are vying to signify this district, which incorporates components of the Previous City, Streeterville, Gold Coast and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. Republican George Kemper, 28, served as a machine-gunner and mortar man whereas deployed to Syria in 2019. He sees time period limits as the reply to the size of corruption that has tainted Illinois politics for many years.
Democratic incumbent Margaret Croke, 30, received this seat by defeating a crowded, gifted subject within the 2020 Democratic main. She’s a former deputy chief of workers for the Illinois Division of Commerce and Financial Alternative below the administration of Gov. J.B. Pritzker. As a member of the Home Income and Finance Committee, Croke has helped push by tax credit for companies as a technique to stoke funding and job progress. Croke voted towards Madigan’s retention as Home speaker and says, “I’d take that vote once more in a heartbeat.” We promote Croke.
Hoan Huynh received the Democratic main by beating his get together’s most well-liked alternative, Eileen Dordek — who was endorsed by Pritzker and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin — and three different gifted opponents. We don’t ascribe to the whole lot in Huynh’s progressive agenda, however there’s lots to love.
He believes it’s time for Illinois to overtake redistricting by giving residents a serious voice within the course of. He additionally desires to ferret out wasteful spending in Springfield and would work to dispose of useless crimson tape that impedes small enterprise progress. He desires to rein within the affect of massive cash in Illinois politics, and accurately sees a must strengthen the state’s Freedom of Data Act by increasing its scope and making penalties for noncompliance extra extreme.
Huynh, 33, is an funding tasks chief for a group investments group known as Chicago Past who would develop into the state legislature’s first Vietnamese American if elected. His Republican opponent, Alper Turan, 51, is an adjunct professor at Metropolis Faculties of Chicago who desires to see a 10-year discount in property taxes and consolidation of native governments the place warranted. Our endorsement on this district, which incorporates components of the Lincoln Sq., Uptown, Andersonville and Lakeview neighborhoods, goes to Huynh.

Illinois State Police trooper hurt in multi-vehicle crash near Chicago
(25News Now) – An Illinois State Police trooper was hurt in a five-vehicle crash Saturday morning in the Chicago suburb of South Barrington, but there are conflicting reports about the severity of the trooper’s injuries.
State Police said the trooper was heading to an accident scene to help with traffic control at Illinois Route 59 and Higgins Road. Police said the trooper activated his emergency lights and sirens, but was struck by another vehicle at the intersection about 9:45 a.m.
The trooper suffered critical injuries, according to a release from the East Dundee and Countryside Fire Protection District, but State Police said the trooper’s injuries were not life-threatening.
The fire department said it took almost a half-hour to extricate the trooper from his heavily damaged vehicle.
Authorities said two people from other vehicles were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
State Police are investigating.
Saturday’s accident happened less than a month after State Police Trooper Clay Carns was killed in a crash on I-55 in Will County.
The 35-year-old officer left his squad car to pick up debris from the roadway when he was struck by a passing pickup truck two days before Christmas. The truck’s 69-year-old driver was cited for not moving over to avoid hitting Trooper Carns.
