Five-Time NBA Champion Blames Pat Riley for LeBron James Leaving Miami Heat

LeBron James thrived in his four seasons with the Miami Heat, winning two championships and helping the team reach the NBA Finals every year.

By all accounts, the Big Three era—as short as it may have been—was an unquestioned success.

What would have happened had James stayed in Miami? Longtime NBA guard Ron Harper says Pat Riley’s presence is why we never learned the answer.

During a recent appearance on Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller’s podcast, Riley said he believes the Heat could have won five or six championships had James not returned to Cleveland in July 2014. The Heat have not won the NBA Finals since 2013.

Harper, who won five titles with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, blamed James’ departure on Riley.

“Tell them why he left?” Harper wrote on X. “You wasn’t dealing with what comes with him.”

Riley never coached James in Miami. He’s served as the Heat’s president since 2008. James joined the Heat in July 2010. It’s also worth noting Harper never played under Riley.

For his part, Riley has discussed his up-and-down relationship with James in the past. In the 2018 book The Soul of Basketball, Riley admitted he was “absolutely livid” when James signed with the Cavaliers.

However, Riley acknowledged he later understood why James left Miami for a second stint in Cleveland. James helped the Cavaliers to their first championship in 2016 and reached the Finals all four seasons in Cleveland.

“While there may have been some carnage always left behind when he made these kinds of moves, in Cleveland and also in Miami, he did the right thing,” Riley said.

Sources told ESPN in 2018 that James and Riley hadn’t spoken since 2014.

Holiday pop-up bars are the hot thing: Here are 33 of the best in Greater Cleveland and beyond

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The holiday season in Cleveland always feels like a special time of the year, especially for folks looking to get together and enjoy the city’s best bars and restaurants.

In recent years, the idea of Christmas pop-up bars has exploded into a phenomenon, and it’s at a peak in 2024. Bars and restaurants across Northeast Ohio, from Madison to Sandusky to Cuyahoga Falls, are decking the halls and going all-out on Christmas decor and festive cocktails for this holiday season.

Various bars and restaurants across the U.S. have always strung up lights or put a tree up around the holiday season. However, in the age of flashy social media marketing campaigns, the trend of Christmas bars has exploded, with watering holes competing with each other to create the most Instagram-friendly decor.

Plus, Clevelanders have embraced the craft cocktail trend, and a holiday pop-up gives bars a rich opportunity to play around with seasonal recipes. Finally, holiday pop-ups are perfect for bar crawls, another popular trend in U.S. nightlife, with revelers bouncing from themed bar to themed bar — via Uber or a designated driver, of course.

A new addition to the list includes Nano Brew on West 25th Street in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. Owner Sam McNulty and his crew, spearheaded by colleague Kassie Mackay, spent two days in mid-November stringing lights and decorating trees to turn Nano Brew into Holiday Land.

McNulty, who also owns Market Garden Brewery, got the idea for the bar after the hugely successful launch of the Holiday Land mixed beer pack. The pack includes its Festivus Holiday Spiced Ale that started it all, joined by three new seasonal releases – Cool Runnings Rum Cake Stoud, Party Lights Winter Wheat and Spruce Tips IPA.

“It’s kind of like if you were to climb into the Holiday Land box, this is what it would look like,” McNulty said of the bar.

As for the trend in general, McNulty, who also owns Clandestina and Bright Side on the popular street, thinks that Clevelanders just love a reason to celebrate.

“We’re always looking for a reason to party and get together with family and friends, and the holidays are a great reason,” he said.

He might be biased, but he thinks that Ohio City in general becomes popular during the season for locals to show out-of-town guests some of the best that the city has to offer, like the West Side Market.

“Nothing says the holiday like having a beer in Ohio City,” McNulty added.

In Madison, Grand River Cellars has brought back its Grinchmas Bar for the second year, turning its cozy winery into a Grinch-themed Christmas bar. After the bar’s debut last year was a success, owner Cindy Lindberg thought it was a no-brainer to bring it back to continue to spread Christmas cheer.

“Not only did our customers thoroughly enjoy it, but also my staff,” Lindberg said. “It made it a better experience for them during the holiday season.”

Kendrick Perkins Calls Out D’Angelo Russell, Lakers on Social Media

Kendrick Perkins Calls Out D’Angelo Russell, Lakers on Social Media

After a strong start to the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have struggled to find their footing over the last few games.

L.A. has struggled mightily, and things came to a collapse on Tuesday night when they were blown out by the Phoenix Suns, 127-100. The Suns dominated the Lakers, especially in the second half of what was a close game at halftime, which turned into a route, and in the blink of an eye, the Lakers were out of the game.

Los Angeles is in a rut, and it’s become very easy to pile on them. Former NBA champion turned analyst Kendrick Perkins chimed in on the Lakers as he blasted their performance, including the play of D’Angelo Russell and LeBron James.

Perkins was not shy about sharing his thoughts on L.A. on Twitter/X Tuesday night.

He first shared this tweet.

“Perimeter play will always be the issue for the Lakers on both ends of the floor. Hopefully Pelinka address the issue before Bron retires!!!”

Minutes later, he blasted Russell for his poor play.

“D’Angelo Russell be trippen. Some of the things he does on the court makes my damn skin crawl.”

Finally, he called out James for his poor defensive play and body language.

“Bron was horrible tonight defensively and his body language was unacceptable.”

Perkins is one to never shy away from being vocal, and that was the case on Tuesday.

The former NBA champion was teammates with James during the 2018 season when he signed a contract for the remainder of the season in mid-April. Perkins only played one game with the Cavaliers and spent most of his time on the bench.

The Cavaliers made the NBA Finals that season thanks to James’ heroics. Although they lost the NBA Finals, 4-0, it was James’ play that made it possible that they even had a chance to win another title for Cleveland.

The Lakers suffered their worst loss of the season as nothing went right for L.A. in the second half. Russell has struggled all season long, and that continued in the Suns ‘game. He recorded 16 points on 5-for-13 shooting from the field and 1-for-6 from three, along with three rebounds and four assists in 29 minutes.

James recorded 18 points in 35 minutes, along with eight rebounds and 10 assists, and shot 7-for-16 from the field.

Perkins has and will continue to tell it like it is.
