Maryland police solve massive mail theft investigation

A woman has been charged with stealing checks from mailboxes, altering and cashing nearly a half-million dollars’ worth.

A car stopped for speeding on Colesville Road in Silver Spring turned out to hold a portable check fraud operation.

Hundreds of business and personal checks belonging to different people, thousands in cash, a printer and blank check printing paper were found in the Chrysler 200 in February 2022.

The court documents also list two other items: a U.S. Postal Service Mail carrier’s bag and hat.
Those things, said Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy, made their criminal actions go almost unnoticed.

“They would’ve seen what would’ve looked like an insignia that this was a U.S. postal worker doing their job, working hard for us at 9:30 at night,” he said. “In fact, what they were doing was emptying out a mailbox.”

McCarthy said the car’s contents helped craft a case in a frustrating series of crimes that began in Fall of 2020.

Bethesda and Silver Spring experienced a large amount of mail thefts.

Suspects obtained from Postal Service letter carriers — through force in some cases — what are known as “arrow keys.” They’d gain entry into blue mailboxes late at night. Stolen checks were altered, deposited and immediately withdrawn for cash.

Terri Tolliver with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is also involved in the investigation, urges caution with the blue boxes while security continues to be upgraded.

“If you have the opportunity, take it into the post office,” Tolliver said. “If you can’t get to the post office, we have men and women letter carriers in your neighborhood. Hand that important mail directly to the letter carrier, and they’ll make sure that it gets safely to its destination.

As part of the investigation, police contacted the owners of all the checks found, telling them that money they thought they were sending to pay a utility bill or to a grandchild, ended up in the hands of thieves.

The Cowboys are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 7-10 season.

This time around they will have a new coach, former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is also expected to return from a hamstring tendon avulsion that ended his season in Week 9.

Prescott enters the season 2,746 yards behind Tony Romo for the most passing yards in Cowboys history.

The Cowboys are hopeful a healthier season could lead them back to the playoffs.

Ravens S Ar’Darius Washington tears his Achilles tendon during offseason conditioning, reports say

Associated Press

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Baltimore Ravens safety Ar’Darius Washington reportedly tore his Achilles tendon during offseason conditioning.

NFL Network and The Baltimore Sun, both citing unidentified sources Wednesday, reported Washington’s injury, which could impact the team’s defense this coming season. Washington started from late October on last season, and his presence helped the Ravens’ pass defense turn its season around after a shaky start.

Washington signed his restricted free agent tender with the Ravens last month. He’s played all four of his NFL seasons with Baltimore.

The Ravens did use their first-round draft pick this year on another safety, taking Malaki Starks out of Georgia.

On this date in Penguins history: Pittsburgh blows out Washington in Game 7 easy-breather

Sixteen years ago today, the Penguins went into the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. and came away with an easy win against the Capitals in Game 7 of a playoff series between the two teams.

The series had featured massive swings with the Penguins falling into a 2-0 hole and then evening things up with two wins at home.

Pittsburgh won in overtime in Game 5 before the Capitals forced a seventh game with an overtime win of their own.

Going into Game 7 on the road, it felt like anything was possible. Three of the six games needed overtime and no lead ever felt safe as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin were trying to propel their young teams to new heights.

Early on in the elimination game, Alex Ovechkin had a chance to set a tone with a breakaway just three minutes into the contest — but Fleury stood tall, setting a tone of his own.

It took a little time but the Penguins eventually stormed their way through the game, sending the Capitals home for the season.

Sidney Crosby and Craig Adams each scored late in the first period, only 8 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead. Early in the second period Bill Guerin and Kris Letang extended the lead to 4-0 before Jordan Staal added a 5th goal for the Penguins.

Ovechkin got the Caps on the board late in the second before Sidney Crosby made it 6-1 and Brooks Laich got the Capitals within four, with the game ending at a score of 6-2.

Who would’ve thought at the time the two teams wouldn’t meet again in the postseason for another 7 years?
