Tariff uncertainty looms large as Outdoor Retailer returns to Utah
SALT LAKE CITY — A collective giggle erupted in a Salt Palace Convention Center conference room when the T-word made its first appearance at this year’s Outdoor Retailer.

“They’re the elephant that everybody has to deal with in the industry at this point,” said Sunny Stroeer, owner of Dreamland Safari Tours in Kanab and founder of the mountaineering adventure group AWExpeditions.
The outdoor industry supported about 5 million jobs in the U.S. alone two years ago, as well as $1.2 trillion in economic output and 2.3% of the country’s gross domestic product, according to the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. But the impact of tariffs — a tax on imported goods — remains unclear for the people who manufacture outdoor products and the people who sell them.
President Donald Trump raised tariffs for certain countries not long after taking office in January, and he imposed even more widespread tariffs as part of his “Liberation Day” plan unveiled in April. What complicates this for outdoor retail companies is that they do source from many different countries. When pressed by a concerned business in the audience, she explained that the best approach to deal with the uncertainty is to review operational logistics and prepare for every possible outcome.
“When it comes to tariffs, we really don’t know what the future is going to hold,” she said.
This year’s Outdoor Retailer features about 300 brands from dozens of countries, many of which are displaying the latest and greatest versions of gear, materials, and ideas in outdoor recreation products. Executives at other companies described how they’re handling the situation, such as trying to stick to a strategy that works and ride through the uncertainty.
“Despite the industry going through the ups and downs, people are going to find a way to get outside,” said Peter Labore, CEO of winter sports gear retailer Christy Sports, pointing to a range of popular outdoor activities. “How we participate in that, how we help enable people (get outdoors), there’s a role for us. … It’ll work out. This too shall pass.”

While tariffs could be this year’s boogeyman, experts say artificial intelligence could be a major barrier-breaker in the industry. A panel discussion focused on how AI can help companies in many ways, ranging from operational efficiency to trimming advertising costs.

For businesses like Park City’s Skullcandy, content creation now accounts for nearly a quarter of the sales budget. Utah drivers rethink budgets as gas prices jump
SALT LAKE CITY — When Kimberly L. pulled up to the gas pump on Sunday, she was unfortunately prepared for the prices that awaited her.
“Between my husband’s truck and my car, we’re well over $300 a month in gas,” she said. “It hits your pocket, and we’ve got a one-working-person household of four, so we’ve had to budget differently.”

“I’m actually probably going to be riding this a lot more often. Gets way better gas mileage than any of our vehicles,” she added.
According to AAA, as of Sunday, average gas prices in Utah were around $3.16 compared to $2.74 the week prior.
“I went to go get gas the other day, and I spent $10 on two and a half gallons of gas. And it was insane,” said Grace Wieland from Park City. “Most of my activities are down in Salt Lake, so it’s hard to come down here every week and do the things I love to do whenever gas is so expensive.”
“At work, I make around $18 an hour, and that’s not even a full tank. It’s like two hours at work is one tank, which is kind of crazy,” said Addison Lowe, who is also from Park City.
According to Gas Buddy, the rising prices come after the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran, impacting ships that carry large amounts of oil that pass through the Straight of Hormuz, a key trade route.
“Gas prices likely continue advancing, oil prices will likely keep climbing until that oil can move again,” said petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan.
AAA said the last time the national average made a similar jump was in March of 2022 during the Russia/Ukraine conflict.
In the meantime, Utahns told FOX 13 News that they will continue to budget and hope prices go down sooner rather than later.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Reps. Celeste Maloy and Mike Kennedy made their reelection bids official this week, announcing they will run for the new 3rd District and 4th District, respectively, under the state’s newly established congressional map.

Kennedy said it was an “honor” to serve with Owens in Congress, adding he was “grateful for his service and his friendship.”
