South Carolina man confesses to murdering California woman 21 years later

A South Carolina man has confessed to the homicide of a California girl 21 years in the past in Alabama, based on native stories.

Her household reported her lacking in 2002, telling authorities that Luxford traveled from her residence in Jacksonville, Florida, to a motel in Bessemer in September 2001 when she was “final seen leaving with unknown trucker,” the NamUS web site states.

Jones, her boyfriend and a trucker on the time, confessed to the Bessemer Police Division that he hit Luxford within the throat with a membership in February 2001 after the pair bought right into a dispute over cash at a Bessemer motel on ninth Ave. SW. “It’s not a murder that we even had on our radar,” Clemons mentioned. “It’s one thing that he dedicated right here 21 years in the past and no person knew that it occurred apart from him.”

Jones is charged with first-degree homicide and abuse of a corpse. He’s being held on $750,000 bond, based on the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Workplace.

Bhaghani’s late FG helps UCLA win its opener with a 16-13 victory over Hawaii

Mateen Bhaghani converted a 32-yard field goal with 56 seconds to play to help UCLA open its season with a 16-13 win over Hawaii on Saturday night.

The Bruins (1-0) did all their scoring in the second half to erase a 10-0 halftime deficit against the Rainbow Warriors (1-1).

UCLA overcame a lackluster first 30 minutes of the game and eventually evened the score at 13 with 14:05 to play on Bhaghani’s 37-yard field goal that came five plays after an interception by D.J. Justice.

The Bruins started their final drive with 3:08 to play and drove 45 yards in seven plays, capped by Bhaghani’s game-winning 32-yard field goal from the left hash that split the uprights.

Hawaii scored on its opening possession, when it orchestrated a nine-play, 73-yard drive that was punctuated by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Schager to a wide open Pofele Ashlock. Schager was 7-for-7 passing on the drive for 51 yards on the drive, which was extended by a 19-yard gain by punter Lucas Borrow on fourth-and-6.

Kansei Matsuzawa’s 28-yard field goal as time expired in the first half gave Hawaii a 10-0 lead at the intermission. The field goal was set up by Logan Taylor’s interception and seven-yard return to the UCLA 5-yard line.

The Bruins got on the board after they cashed in their first possession of the second half with a 39-yard scoring strike from Ethan Garbers to Rico Flores Jr. The touchdown pass capped an eight-play, 96-yard drive that took 4:36 off the clock.

THE TAKEAWAY

UCLA was picked to finish 15th out of 18 teams in a preseason Big Ten Conference media poll. It entered the game — its first under coach DeShaun Foster and its debut as a Big Ten Conference member — with much uncertainty, but the Bruins may have more questions after week 1 than in the lead up to it.

Despite the loss Hawaii hung with the Bruins for more than 59 minutes. The Rainbow Warriors, who were picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West Conference, were seeking their first win over a Power Conference team since they beat Arizona in 2019.

UCLA will have a bye next week before it opens Big Ten Conference play at home against Indiana on Sept. 14

Hawaii also has a bye next week before it makes the first of five road trips this season when it visits Sam Houston on Sept. 14 for the first meeting between the schools.

Idaho State falls in season opener to Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Oregon (KMVT/KSVT) — The Idaho State Bengals were defeated 38-15 by the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday in the first game of each team’s season at Reser Stadium.

Oregon State opened the scoring with a touchdown before the Bengals defense put up the first points of the season on a safety.

On the next drive the offense would score its first points of the season on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Kobe Tracy to Christian Fredericksen to give ISU a 9-7 lead.

The Beavers would score the next 24 points to take a 31-9 lead late in the third quarter before the Bengals scored their second touchdown of the game on a Hunter Hays nine-yard touchdown pass to Michael Shulikov, the two-point attempt was no good.

Oregon State would add a touchdown in the fourth to cruise to a 38-15 win in the season opener.

It gets a little easier for ISU next weekend in their home opener against Western Oregon with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m. in Pocatello.

Reed Point Sheep Drive 2024 honors former sheep shaver and community friend

REED POINT — All day Sunday, hundreds of people and sheep will flock to Division Street in Reed Point, for the annual Sheep Drive.

Unfortunately, this year will look different than most, as Olen Raisland, the town’s famous sheep shearer, passed away in April.

“It’s left a big hole in the community, losing Olen,” said Lynn Phipps.

Phipps, a Reed Point community member, was friends with Olen for years. He even trained her daughter on sheep shearing for almost two decades.

As Reed Point has a population of about 210 people, Olen’s loss has made a ripple in the townspeople’s pride this year.

“You just have to work around them. It’s the only thing that keeps you going,” says Jerry Friend.

Friend is a member of the Reed Point Community Club and lives in the town. He’s been organizing the event for the past 35 years, only one year after the event began.

Though Olen’s loss was devastating to the community, Reed Point is still trying to make this year’s Sheep Drive the best year yet.

“I feel like there’s a lot of support for Sheep Drive. Our Community Club is kind of a small organization, but when it gets closer to the date of Sheep Drive and stuff, a lot of people step up and help out,” said Lev Ott.

Lev and Audrey Ott are two of the organizers behind the event, and knowing that Olen loved to shave hundreds of sheep every Labor-Day weekend, they want to honor that activity completely to him.

“Like this year, the newest thing is the Olen Raisland sheep shearing demonstration. I think he was the one that sheep sheared for all of the sheep drive events, and we thought it was really important for him passing away, that we honored him,” says Audrey Ott.
