San Diego Humane Society seeks urgent foster help amid overcrowding

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In an effort to address overcrowding at its facility, the San Diego Humane Society is waiving adoption fees through December 1st. It is also putting out a call for volunteers willing to serve as foster families.

“We’ve been over capacity with dogs for more than a year now and this is unprecedented. We’ve never seen anything like this before,” SDHS spokesperson Nina Thompson told ABC 10News at an adoption event on Sunday.

Thompson said that there are currently around 700 dogs in their care, about 150% of its capacity, with 400 available for adoption. She also emphasized the urgent need for foster families.

“We provide all the resources. You provide the home, the love, and the time.” Fostering is a great way to help, because it not only alleviates overcrowding but also prepares dogs for adoption, improving their chances of finding permanent homes rather than remaining in the stressful shelter environment, Thompson said.

SDHS has successfully brought an outbreak of the disease known as strep zoo under control, ensuring that all dogs available for adoption are now cleared. “Luckily, we were able to identify that disease and treat all of the dogs that are in our care with antibiotics. We’ve been deep cleaning for weeks now,” she said.

Strep zoo is different from the “mystery illness” which has been sweeping through shelters around the country. Thompson said the latter has not been found in San Diego, but it is putting more pressure on them to find homes for the dogs more quickly.

“We still need more help because as many dogs as we adopt out, more come into our care,” Thompson said.

“I saw that they were over 100% capacity and I was like, ‘I’ve got to go visit, I got to see what I can do.’ I even donated, as well, but I felt like that wasn’t enough. I needed to get one out of here,” said Maisia Ilana, a woman who went through the adoption process Sunday. She left with a Siberian Husky named Maya.

Ilano encouraged San Diegans to do their research, and, if able, make the commitment to help. “Dogs are great companions. They love you more than anything. So I think more San Diegans should definitely adopt,” she said.

The San Diego Padres and the Kansas City Royals meet Sunday in MLB action from Kauffman Stadium. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best bets for this game. Here’s a Kansas City Royals vs San Diego Padres Prediction.

Starting Pitching Matchup

The San Diego Padres will send out Michael King for the start here and King is 4-4 with a 4.09 ERA and 74 strikeouts this season. In his career, King is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA and 6 strikeouts against the Royals. Cole Ragans will start for the Royals here and is 4-4 with a 3.36 ERA and 83 strikeouts this season. This will be Ragans’ first career start against the Padres.

Padres Starting To Pick It Up Offensively

Jurickson Profar leads the Padres with 67 hits along with a .325 batting average and 10 doubles with 8 homers and 38 RBIs. Jake Cronenworth has 38 RBIs while Fernando Tatis Jr. has belted a team-high 10 home runs this season. Manny Machado has 5 home runs and 29 RBIs but also has 52 strikeouts while Ha-Seong Kim has 45 hits with 3 triples, 6 doubles, 7 home runs, 27 RBIs and a team-high 13 stolen bases. Tatis Jr. also has a team-high 55 strikeouts and 6 stolen bases as well this season.

Why the San Diego Padres will win

  • The Padres have won each of their last eight road games against American League opponents.
  • The Royals have lost three of their last four games as favorites against NL West opponents.
  • The Padres have covered the run line in 12 of their last 13 road games against teams that held a winning record.
  • The Royals have failed to cover the run line in seven of their last eight home games against National League opponents.

Kansas City Royals Recap

The Kansas City Royals come into this one looking to salvage something from this series despite having already taken the L in the series after Saturday’s loss which stings for the Royals after a series loss to the Twins earlier in the week.

Royals Having Inconsistencies With Results

Bobby Witt Jr. leads the Royals with 75 hits including 9 home runs, 42 RBIs and team-highs of 6 triples and 16 doubles with 17 stolen bases. Salvador Perez also has a team-high 10 home runs with 41 RBIs and 14 doubles. Nelson Velazquez also has a team-high 54 strikeouts while Maikel Garcia has 5 home runs, 35 RBIs and 13 stolen bases along with 3 triples and 12 doubles this season. Vinnie Pasquantino has 15 doubles with 7 homers and 39 RBIs of his own on the year.

Why the Kansas City Royals will win

  • The Royals have won seven of their last nine games at Kauffman Stadium.
  • The Padres have lost 13 of their last 17 day games against AL Central opponents.
  • The Padres have failed to cover the run line in 16 of their last 17 day games against AL Central opponents.
  • The Royals have covered the run line in six of their last seven games as home favorites.
  • The Royals have led after 3 innings in each of their last six home day games.

Kansas City Royals vs San Diego Padres Prediction

I’m on the Royals here. I really like what I’ve seen from Cole Ragans in a lot of his recent outings, and Ragans is a pitcher viewed by many to be the staff ace of this Kansas City rotation. Michael King has been wildly inconsistent for the Padres, and it’s not lost on me that the Royals are still one of the best home teams in baseball this season. I’ll side with Kansas City at home here.

13 San Diego Co. Rubio's Close Due To 'Rising Cost Of Doing Business'

SAN DIEGO, CA — “The rising cost of doing business in California” contributed to Rubio’s Coastal Grill officials decision to close 13 San Diego County locations Friday, a spokesperson told local media outlets.

KGTV is reporting Rubio’s closed 48 underperforming locations across California on May 31, including locations in Pacific Beach, El Cajon, Escondido, La Jolla, San Marco, Solana Beach and Vista. The following locations in San Diego also closed:

  • 9187 Clairemont Mesa Blvd Suite 7
  • 8935 Towne Centre Dr., Suite 100
  • 9254 Scranton Rd, Ste 105
  • 7835 Highlands Village Place, Suite D101
  • 2260 Callagan Hwy Bldg. 3187
  • 910 Grand Avenue

Rubio’s is among California fast food restaurants affected by an increase in minimum wage costs, which took effect this past year. In 2024, California’s hourly minimum wage increased to $16 for most workers on January 1st and to $20 for fast food workers in April.

Alan Gin, an economics professor with the University of San Diego, told NBC 7 San Diego there have been other factors — on top of the wage increases — affecting Rubio’s, which has had financial difficulties for awhile. In 2015, the business had 193 locations nationwide.

“So –they’ve cut about a third of those and so they’re going to cut another third with the closings that were announced yesterday,” he told NBC.

In 202o, the business filed for bankruptcy, citing COVID-19 as having a significant impact on the business.

“This restructuring plan creates the long-term financial stability we need to continue to serve our communities for years to come,” co-founder Ralph Rubio said in a statement.

Padres Make Big Roster Moves Ahead of Game Against Royals, Place Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove On IL

The San Diego Padres announced that their right-handed starting pitches, Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, will be placed on the 15-day injured list.

The official San Diego Padres’ Twitter/X account and Kevin Acee from the San Diego Union-Tribune were the first to break the news on Saturday morning.

According to Acee, Musgrove’s and Darvish’s injuries, while not season-ending, are significant. Musgrove is still grappling with right elbow inflammation, and his placement date is retroactive to May 29. This is a recurrence of the triceps tendinitis that had already sent him to the injured list at the beginning of May, affecting the one-time All-Star’s performance.

The Padres recalled right-handed pitcher Randy Vásquez to replace Musgrove. Vásquez will start in Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The 25-year-old will get another shot in the big leagues after posting a 5.82 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 21.2 innings and five starts.

Darvish is on the IL after leaving Wednesday’s game against the Miami Marlins due to a left groin strain. His IL stint is retroactive to May 30. Darvish will be eligible to return on June 14. Taking Darvish’s place in the rotation will be right-handed pitcher Logan Gillaspie. Gillaspie holds a 0.00 ERA in two appearances with four strikeouts.
