Minnesota State Champion Catherine Dueck Commits to University of San Diego (2024)


Catherine Dueck of Victoria, Minnesota has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of San Diego. Dueck attends Holy Family Catholic High School and trains year round with the Minnetonka Swim Club.

“I feel incredibly blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of San Diego. I would like to thank my parents, teammates, teachers and coaches for all of their support and kindness. So excited to call myself a Torero!”

Dueck just wrapped up an excellent high school, leading Mound Westonka-Holy Family’s team to their first conference championship and taking home a pair of individual titles at the Minnesota State High School League Class A Championships (MSHSL).

The former was decided by a dual meet with Delano High School which came down to the last event, the 400 free relay. By the time Dueck dove in to anchor her team, MWHF’s A squad was 2.33 seconds behind. Deuck split 52.36, just tenths over her best 100 free time (52.14), to pull past Delano’s anchor, win the relay, and tie the meet (93-93). That made MWHF and Delano co-conference champions. Dueck also had a perfect individual meet, winning both the 200 IM (2:09.26) and 100 breast (1:07.07).

At the MSHSL Class A state championship meet, Dueck hit best times in both the 200 IM (2:03.22) and 100 breast (1:02.99) to claim her first individual state titles. In 2022, she was the runner-up in both events. She also swam breaststroke on her team’s 200 medley relay and anchored the 400 free relay. Both relays finished 6th.

Dueck also had a successful long course season, highlighted by a Minnesota state title in the 200 IM (2:21.43).

The University of San Diego is a Division 1 mid-major team and competes in the Mount Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference. Last season, the women’s team finished 8th at the MPSF conference championship. The program has been led by Mike Keeler since 1998.

Dueck is poised to make an immediate impact on the Toreos when she arrives next fall. She would have been San Diego’s top performers in the 100 breast and 200 IM last season, with MPSF scoring times in both as well as the 50 free. She will also add some depth to San Diego’s sprint free relays and is on the cusp of scoring in the 200 breast.

Dueck joins fellow Minnesotan swimmer Mallory Paine and diver Kaila Nguyen of Washington State in San Diego’s incoming class of 2024.

SAN DIEGO – Precision micro-printing provider Boston Micro Fabrication (BMF) has launched San Diego-based BMF Biotechnology Inc., a spinout dedicated to making specialized chips through cultivated large-scale tissues in vitro, helping accelerate new drug and cosmetic development.

“BMF Biotechnology’s BioChips allow scientists to grow human-like tissues in a lab setting and because these chips mimic how substances would be processed inside the body, scientists can use them to test drugs and cosmetic products,” BMF Biotechnology Chief Scientific Officer Jennifer Sun told the Business Journal.

“These microfluidic chips are an organ-on-a-chip platform, which can replicate the physiological conditions found in the human body by controlling the flow of small amounts of fluid through micro-size channels.”

Founded in 2016, BMF says it supports more than 2,000 customers globally with offices in Boston, China, Japan and now in San Diego.

“BMF has raised over $80M in investment funding, including $24M in 2023,” added Sun. “We have over 250 employees worldwide with global revenue growth exceeding 30% in 2023.”

Wanting to be housed in San Diego’s vibrant biotech ecosystem, the company’s San Diego Research Institute was born in 2022. The newly launched biotech division will operate out of Carroll Canyon with ten or so employees to start.

Preliminary feedback has yielded promising results, says BMF.

“Specifically, significant progress has been made in terms of developing functional prototypes of the BMF Biotechnology’s BioChip, validating their efficacy in replicating human tissue models accurately,” shared Sun. “Furthermore, preliminary tests have shown encouraging outcomes of disease modeling and validating human drug responses.”

BMF is entering an arena of competitors like MIMETAS and InSphero – working to commercialize organ-on-a-chip technology. Sun says its product stands apart.

“Our BioChip platform offers distinctive features, including a micro-channel network designed to mimic blood vessels with micron level three dimensional features. This network ensures efficient nutrient delivery and waste removal throughout the chip, enabling the comprehensive replication of human tissues on a large scale.”

Hybrid Printing Solution

In recent years, micro molding and 3D printing innovations have swept the micro-manufacturing world, advancing how production companies do business.

New England-based BMF’s core tech enables highly precise, micro-scale 3D printing across industries like healthcare, life sciences, electronics and machining.

“3D printing has often been known for its ability to rapidly iterate on product design, but this same benefit can also be applied to developing custom, high-precision solutions that advance research in other ways – such as through pharmaceutical development,” said Sun. Now the industry is trending toward miniaturization. “As products and technology get smaller, the connective parts become micro and more intricate. There is an urgent need for highly precise and accurate manufacturing methods that allow engineers and product designers to consistently create small-scale parts with the precision, resolution and accuracy needed to move industries forward.”

This month, BMF announced what it calls the industry’s first line of hybrid printing solutions for micro-scale and ultra high-resolution applications that allow the user to print two resolutions within a single layer or in different layers.

It comes after another big win for the company. Last year it launched what it deems the world’s thinnest cosmetic dental veneer, UltraThineer™. This April, BMF secured FDA 510(k) clearance on the material.

SAN DIEGO – When I learned that the RUTH: Remember Us The Holocaust exhibit at the Rancho San Diego Library would be having its closing ceremony this weekend, I felt a little sad. It is a very thorough exhibit and I spent time reading the many stories of survivors. I am going on Thursday (tomorrow) with the Jewish Women’s Circle of Chabad East County one more time.

I will think of my dear late friend Rose Schindler who told me personally her father told her to “stay alive, so that you can tell the world what they are doing to us.” With the exhibit having its closing ceremony (it will remain open until June) I thought of Schindler’s words and wondered, now what? Who is going to continue to tell the story? Our survivors are sadly aging and passing so it relies on us to tell the stories and to not forget.

I will never forget the amazing survivors I met and the connections I had with them. At the closing ceremony, they will be showing a video presentation looking back at the then and now of the exhibit. Special guest speakers feature Matt Dunford from Love on the Spectrum, San Diego County Assessor Jordan Marks, Mayor Ron Morrison of National City, Mayor Bill Wells of El Cajon, and Roosevelt Williams the III “The Man Behind the Rose.” This event is free and starts at 3 pm.

Ferbert is San Diego’s chief deputy city attorney.   The incumbent city attorney, Mara Elliott, is termed out.

Merenda Wine Brings European-Style Wine Bar to Oceanside | San Diego Magazine


San Diego has long been a craft beer town. But based on the recent proliferation of wine bars, events, clubs, and retail shops, we seem poised to embrace grapes as our regional beverage of choice. 

Wine bar and shop Merenda will be the newest addition to San Diego’s burgeoning wine scene when it opens at The Flats in Oceanside this July-ish. “Very heavy on the ish,” jokes Aaron Crossland, who co-owns Merenda with his wife, Lauren Crossland-Marr. “We’re moving really quickly so far, but there are always things that come up.”

Merenda is Italian for “snack,” or, more specifically, a snack shared with others. The duo spent time in Italy while Crossland-Marr studied food anthropology and culture, which led to a love of food, drink, and especially wine, explains Crossland. Neither planned to get into the wine business for themselves until two things happened.

“We got this idea for Merenda during Covid, and thought it would probably happen when we were a little older,” he says. “But as it happens, when you hit 40, I realized I really kind of hated what I did for a living and wanted to pursue my passions.”

The two moved back to Oceanside, Crossland’s hometown, to be closer to family and participate in the city’s revitalization. “[We] saw how wonderful Oceanside has been doing economically, with all the new restaurants and stuff coming into town, and wanted to be a part of it,” he explains.

It took about a year to find the right space, but they jumped on it when they saw the opportunity to take over The Flat’s retail suite. “I love the idea of having people actually living in the same space where we’re doing this,” he says, adding there are 18 residential units on-site. Merenda will occupy around 2,000 square feet of space on the ground floor, plus a small patio, with approximately 300 square feet reserved for the retail area. Crossland says they’ll start with a small collection but hope to grow to offer a few hundred SKUs of different wines, heavily emphasizing Old World wines. 

The food program will feature local produce and ingredients as well as Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, with a lot of the direction still being worked out. But Crossland says their charcuterie program will set them apart, with items like housemade salumi, coppa, bresaola, and mortadella. Overall, it’ll be the experience that he says people will come back for.

“We’re really going for an Old World European feel,” he explains. “Lots of wood, very approachable decor.” Bells + Whistles (Jeune et Jolie) handles the design, which Crossland describes as his living room, but better. Details like hand-painted tiles from Portugal, artwork from their collection, and a mural over the pass-through window between the kitchen and dining area will give the space a balance between “comfort and quality,” he says. There will also be a small particular event space for private events.

Once open, Crossland says they plan to launch a wine club and host many events, collaborations, and other tastings to cater to locals who may already know about wine and those just getting started. “A space for people like myself, who obviously love wine, but without all that pretentious B.S.. that goes along with it.”

Former Juniper & Ivy chef Anthony Wells is now the executive chef at Sea & Sky, the new sea-to-table restaurant at Hotel La Jolla, Curio Collection by Hilton in La Jolla Shores.
