Montana Capitol hosts 9/11 memorial ceremony
HELENA — It’s been 24 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks, a day that forever changed our nation. Across the country, people are gathering to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day and the heroism on display.

Here in Helena, Montanans have come together at the Capitol for a remembrance ceremony.
The ringing of the bell echoed through the Capitol Rotunda on Thursday to honor fallen first responders and victims.
“Even in that darkness, we saw extraordinary courage,” Governor Greg Gianforte said.
Courage from first responders, law enforcement, citizens, and firefighters.
Helena Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Chambers remembers being at a fire station and watching it all unfold on television.

“It is something we carry with us throughout the day, the sacrifice and the reality of this job and this line of work,” Chambers said.
Prayers, a moment of silence, and speeches were shared about the events that unfolded that day.
Chambers said, “Although so distanced from the events in D.C., Pennsylvania, and New York that we still here in Montana have a high level of pride for the firefighters, law enforcement, folks in the military, that we are still talking about it and that matters.”

But just as important to remember as September 11 is the day that followed.
“I think this is the time to talk about September 12, when we were all together, we were all thinking the same thing, we were Americans that day,” Chambers said. “I don’t think we are being Americans the way we want to be Americans currently, and I think that is the goal we should strive to.”
BOZEMAN — For the second consecutive week, Montana State sophomore guard Taylee Chirrick has been named Big Sky Conference player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The 5-foot-11 product of Roberts scored the game-winning basket with 1.7 seconds remaining to lift the Bobcats to a 71-70 upset of Big 12 member Colorado on Sunday afternoon at the CU Events Center. Chirrick finished the contest with 21 points, which included a 7-for-7 effort at the free throw line.
Chirrick once again stuffed the stat sheet, pulling down a team-best six rebounds, while adding four steals, three assists and a pair of 3-pointers in the victory.
Chirrick is currently ranked third in the nation averaging 4.5 steals per game, and her 27 total steals rank 14th overall. Her 19.8 points per game rank second in the Big Sky and 28th in the nation.
Montana State opens the Big Sky Conference/Summit League Challenge on Wednesday at North Dakota State in Fargo. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. (MT) in the Scheels Center. The game will air live on the CBS Sports Network.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Montana State squares off with Illinois State Monday night in the FCS national championship game at FirstBank Stadium on the campus of Vanderbilt University. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
The Bobcats are making their third trip to the title game in the past five seasons under coach Brent Vigen. The program is seeking its first championship since 1984.
