EXCLUSIVE: New ‘Gavin Newsom files’ reveal California governor’s ‘extreme’ agenda
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
EXCLUSIVE: Following a week of violent riots in Los Angeles, conservative activist group Catholic Vote has released a report titled the “Gavin Newsom files,” a report highlighting what the group calls the California governor’s “extreme” and “viciously anti-Christian agenda.”
Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, is among the top names being rumored for a 2028 presidential run.
Over the last week, he has been locked in a protracted war of words, which has also manifested itself in a court battle, over President Donald Trump’s response to the riots in Los Angeles. Newsom has called Trump’s use of the National Guard and Marines to respond to the rioting both “immoral” and “illegal.”
A longtime progressive, Newsom has recently moved to present himself as more of a centrist, starting a podcast titled “This is Gavin Newsom” that hosted the likes of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
According to Catholic Vote’s report, however, Newsom is “one of America’s most radical, destructive politicians” who “remains the same ideologue who has trampled parental rights, championed the transgender mutilation of children, and taken pro-abortion advocacy to a sickening extreme.”

“California’s governor claims to be a Catholic ‘man of faith,’” says the report. “But he has a viciously anti-Christian agenda for America.”
Brandon Richards, a spokesperson for Newsom, responded to the report by telling Fox News Digital that “we’re not taking seriously any organization co-founded by a political hack who has sworn allegiance to President Trump, called Pope Francis’ papacy a ruse, and justified cutting off U.S. foreign aid for the poor and hungry because he’d read some conspiracy theory about transgender mice experiments.”
Catholic Vote endorsed Trump for president in 2024 and Catholic Vote founder Brian Burch was selected to be the administration’s U.S. ambassador to the Vatican.
Richards said, “we encourage Catholic Vote, which does not represent the Catholic Church, to read Leviticus: ‘You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.’”
‘As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation’
The report highlights how, despite his recent rebranding, Newsom has long been at the forefront of pushing for ever more liberal policies, championing causes such as abortion and transgender treatments for children.
“Gavin Newsom may be adjusting his style and image. But he remains the same ideologue who has trampled parental rights, championed the transgender mutilation of children, and taken pro-abortion advocacy to a sickening extreme,” says the report.
As a politician with rumored presidential aspirations, Catholic Vote highlights how Newsom has advanced his liberal agenda not just in California, but across the entire country.

The group quoted Newsom from a 2008 interview during a court battle over same-sex marriage, saying: “As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. It’s inevitable.”
Catholic Vote takes particular issue with Newsom’s abortion advocacy, pointing to how he has aggressively expanded abortion in California, signing 12 pro-abortion bills in a single month in September 2022 and nine more again in 2023. The report says that despite professing to be a Catholic, Newsom has not only advocated for a right to abortion, but even used biblical scripture to advertise and promote abortion.
The report points to how, as governor, Newsom commissioned billboards in Oklahoma that advertised “Need an abortion? California is here to help,” with a quote from the Bible saying, “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.”
“This was deemed ‘unconscionable’ by the California Catholic Conference, and a ‘reprehensible act of gross blasphemy’ by a leading Protestant pastor. A statement from the Catholic League summed it up best, calling the billboard campaign ‘demonic,’” says the report.

Catholic Vote stated that “Few figures demonstrate the drift of America’s political Left – away from the Clinton-era language of ‘safe, legal, and rare,’ and toward today’s ‘#ShoutYourAbortion’ attitude – better than Gavin Newsom.”
The report also points to how Newsom has led the nation to “warp” the concept of parental choice to use it as a tool to advance transgender treatments for children. It points to how Newsom signed a bill in 2022 making California the nation’s first “sanctuary state” for parents from other jurisdictions seeking to give their children hormone treatment, puberty-blocking drugs and more. It says that in 2023, Newsom again “doubled down on this strategy of imposing radical ideology and calling it ‘freedom.’ When he instituted new penalties on public school districts that fail to promote homosexuality and transgenderism to children, he framed this as a matter of ‘families’ having ‘the freedom to decide what’s right for them.’”
According to the report, Newsom’s office released a statement in 2023 after he signed a slate of “Supporting LGBTQ+ Californians” policies that declared “hate-filled attacks” of “far-right extremists” would “not be tolerated.”
Catholic Vote said that “if California is indeed ‘America’s Coming Attraction,’ as Newsom claims, believers in Biblical truth – and biological reality – should be gravely concerned.”

“Inevitably, the advance of LGBTQ ideology threatens religious liberty and authentic freedom of conscience in society. These ideologues demand forms of approval and practical compliance that faithful Christians, and other critics of gender nonsense, cannot give them,” says the report.
“Americans have been shocked by the rioting and chaos in Los Angeles, but sadly, this reckless governance is all too common in Gavin Newsom’s California,” Catholic Vote Vice President Josh Mercer told Fox News Digital.
“As our new report, Newsom Files points out, the California governor refused to deal with vexing problems like drug dealers, shoplifters and the rampant homeless camps. Instead, Gavin Newsom was busy dreaming of the White House and spending taxpayer funds to put up billboards in Oklahoma that quote the Bible and urge people to fly to California to get an abortion,” he said. “With his wacky priorities, it’s no wonder people are fleeing California in droves.”

Dem-backed ‘dignity’ bill could strip ICE of detention powers, erase immigration enforcement, critics warn
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
After more than 120 House Democrats signed onto a bill from a top progressive lawmaker to seek what they define as “dignity” for federal immigration detainees, critics sounded the alarm that the legislation could forever transform how illegal immigrants are treated in the U.S.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., is spearheading the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act, along with fellow Evergreen State lawmaker Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. They say it would curb the “shocking surge” of allegedly wrongful detentions and inappropriate conditions, particularly at jails run by private companies under government contract.
Critics vociferously objected to that suggestion in exclusive comments to Fox News Digital Friday.
“This legislation isn’t aimed at improving conditions for migrants navigating the U.S. immigration system. It would instead end the federal government’s ability to enforce immigration law entirely,” members of the Day 1 Alliance, the main trade association representing longtime federal and state contractors in the criminal justice and immigration spaces, warned.

Day 1 Alliance members said that, for more than three decades, both Republican and Democratic congresses and administrations have respected the “limited yet valued” role their members play in working toward a better immigration enforcement system.
The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act would lead to the repeal of mandatory detention for those captured by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to a summary posted by Jayapal, and create a presumption of release, imposing a higher burden of proof to detain primary caregivers and “vulnerable populations.”
It also would phase out the use of private detention centers, like those Day 1 Alliance members may work in or with, by about 2029.

In apparent response to Democrats being iced out of ICE centers earlier in 2025, including a case in Newark, New Jersey, where Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., was accused of accosting officers, it also would mandate that the Department of Homeland Security admit members of Congress to detention facilities for unannounced inspections.
Another case in Baltimore involved that city’s congressman, Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume, joining others downtown to protest to the press about not being allowed full access to the Charm City’s Department of Homeland Security installation.
“Contractors operate under strict federal oversight and standards set by the U.S. Congress,” Day 1 Alliance members told Fox News Digital of the implications about the proposed changes.

“They do not make arrests, do not decide the length of detention and play no role in determining the legal status of individuals in their care.”
The members said contractors work to provide humane housing, proper meals and quality medical care for all in their ward.
Jayapal said Thursday the Trump administration has caused a “shocking surge in the detention of people who have committed no crimes.”
“As Trump has struck down legal pathways and made it nearly impossible to come to or stay in this country, even for those who have been here for decades, this will only continue to get worse,” Jayapal said. “We must pass this legislation to protect dignity and civil rights in America.”
Smith added that the U.S. is witnessing “appalling conditions” and a “clear disregard for basic human rights” of detainees.
“No one should be subjected to overcrowded cells, denied medical care or held in facilities that profit off of human suffering,” he said, echoing his Seattle neighbor in saying the bill would provide proper oversight.
DHS SAYS FOUR HOUSE DEMOCRATS ‘CHOSE TO STAND WITH CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS’ AFTER VISITING ICE DETAINEE
Homeland Security officials torched the new bill later Friday.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital Jayapal’s claims of overcrowding, mistreatment and wrongful detention are “false.”
“ICE has higher detention standards than most U.S. prisons that hold actual U.S. citizens,” she said.
“It is a longstanding practice to provide comprehensive medical care from the moment an alien enters ICE custody,” she continued. “This includes medical, dental and mental health intake screening within 12 hours of arriving at each detention facility, a full health assessment within 14 days of entering ICE custody or arrival at a facility and access to medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care. This is the best healthcare many aliens have received in their entire lives. Meals are certified by” dietitians.
McLaughlin added that ICE deaths in custody are at a rate of less than 1%, lower than any previous administration’s record.
She praised House Speaker Mike Johnson’s “big, beautiful bill” as the facilitator of ICE improving detention conditions since President Donald Trump took office.
“Ensuring the safety, security and well-being of individuals in our custody is a top priority at ICE,” she said
A release from Jayapal’s office cited a figure of 66,000 people detained since Trump took office and claimed nearly three-quarters did not have any criminal convictions, an assertion immigration officials have rejected.
There were 123 listed Democratic co-sponsors, including several lawmakers representing areas ICE and USBP have pinpointed for mass enforcement activities.

Rep. Alma Adams of Charlotte; Troy Carter of New Orleans; Steve Cohen of Memphis, Tennessee; Jesus Garcia of Chicago; Robin Kelly of Chicago; Bennie Thompson of Jackson, Mississippi; and Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Ted Lieu of Los Angeles are all among the bill’s hundred-plus signatories.
Fox News Digital reached out to Jayapal, Smith and the Department of Homeland Security for additional comment on the pushback.

San Francisco: Anti-ICE protester gets probation for ‘depredation’ of ICE van’s tire
SAN FRANCISCO — A protester who was initially charged with misdemeanor assault has been sentenced to probation for a less serious offense, ending a federal prosecution that only started four months ago, court records show.
On Dec. 8, Angelica Guerrero, 35, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor “depredation” of an ICE van’s tire — a fancy legal term for slashing it with a knife. The same day, a federal judge sentenced Guerrero to probation, according to a minute order of the hearing.
The charge stemmed from an Aug. 20 protest, when Guerrero slashed the tire of an unmarked Chevrolet van being used in an ongoing “enforcement and removal” operation by the Department of Homeland Security on the 100 block of Montgomery Street, according to prosecutors. The complaint alleges that Guerrero “made repeated threats” against one of the officers, including stating, “I’m going to (expletive) you up” and “I’m going after your family,” as well as threatening to stab the officer.
Guerrero was released within 48 hours but complained of “barbaric” conditions inside Santa Rita Jail, during an interview with ABC7.

Canceled due to high winds: Wednesday’s drone show, holiday tree, Christkindlmarket
Downtown’s Mile High Drone Show, the Denver Christkindlmarket and access to the Mile High Tree have been canceled for Wednesday, Dec. 17, due to high winds, said producers at Visit Denver.
The city’s tourism arm on Wednesday morning decided to cancel the shows and outdoor holiday market for this evening “due to weather conditions,” as well as cut off access to the 110-foot LED icon known as the Mile High Tree, through which visitors can typically walk and snap selfies.
Denver is forecasted to endure wind gusts of up to 50 mph on Dec. 17, with gusts of up to 75 to 80mph possible in higher elevations. High winds, low humidity and the possibility of wildfire led Xcel Energy to cut power to more than 100,000 Front Range residents by Wednesday morning. Xcel Energy also sponsors the Mile High Tree.
Denver Christkindlmarket is scheduled to run through Dec. 23 at the Auraria Campus.
