How To Leave Twitter for Mastodon

Maybe it is the promoting. Maybe it is the politics. Maybe it is the brutal harassment and paper-thin protections for customers. Maybe it is the Nazis. Maybe it is the acquisition by mercurial billionaire Elon Musk (who’s unlikely to make issues higher). Regardless of the cause, you have determined it is lastly time to give up Twitter.

Nice. Welcome to Mastodon.

The Story So Far

I take no pleasure in relating how my relationship with Twitter has soured. After I first joined Twitter in 2008, it was held along with chewing gum and Scotch Tape, however dynamic and rising with the assistance of devoted followers and third-party shoppers. I made new mates and stayed in contact with previous ones. I found such luminaries as Dril(Opens in a new window).

However by 2014, it had already began to really feel like an ad-saturated chore. After which mass harassment campaigns like Gamergate have been abruptly frequent, bots grew to become rampant, and the platform’s position in election interference made it much more unseemly. Twitter not solely ceased to be enjoyable, however it additionally grew to become a harmful and unpredictable place.

Round 2016, a brand new open-source social community known as Mastodon emerged. Anti-advertising options to social networks weren’t new—Diaspora and Ello had already come and (largely) gone when Mastodon debuted. However Mastodon fills an pressing want at a time of actual disaster. It gives an ad-free, community-supported Twitter-like microblogging expertise, and it has baked anti-harassment instruments proper in from the beginning.

Most lately, infamous Twitter person Elon Musk accomplished his bid to purchase the platform. Musk has made a number of statements about restoring “free speech” to Twitter, which to me appears much less about freedom of expression and extra about additional enabling the worst habits on the platform. Time will inform, however it’s plain that his first days as the brand new Twitter CEO have been chaotic, and pushed a surge of signups on Mastodon(Opens in a brand new window).

Earlier than we proceed, I ought to observe that Mastodon did not click on with me instantly. It took a couple of false begins and a few assist from mates a bit braver and savvier than me. However after getting the dangle of it, I like Mastodon like I did Twitter a decade in the past.

Step 1: Delete or Lock Down Your Twitter Account

Time to shut that portal to hell! You might have a couple of choices on the best way to eliminate your Twitter account. You may both deactivate your account or lock it so your posts are now not public. We have now an exhaustive take a look at the best way to not solely delete your Twitter account, but additionally delete all of your Tweets. I will summarize under.

On the Twitter net interface, click on the Extra possibility proper above the big Tweet button on the left of the display. Within the menu that seems, choose Settings and Help, then choose Settings and Privateness. To deactivate your account, scroll all the best way right down to the underside of the Account part, and click on Deactivate Your Account. The subsequent web page is a warning, but additionally a means out: you may choose to have a 30-day or 12-month reactivation grace interval.

Personally, I do not suppose it is a good suggestion to delete a social media account that was as soon as in lively use. There is no assure merely hitting the Delete button will take away your knowledge from the corporate’s servers, so retaining the account no less than provides you a modicum of management. Plus, if somebody have been to impersonate you on that service, getting access to your previous account could be essential in containing the injury.

Menu option for downloading archive of Tweets

In the event you’re lifeless set on deactivating your account, nonetheless, chances are you’ll need to pull out a replica of your archive first. That archive is a full copy of your Tweets, together with your retweets, in a static HTML file and related folders. There are additionally companies that can allow you to take away all of your Tweets, leaving your account lively however empty.

As a substitute of deactivating your account, you may as well make it successfully invisible. Within the Privateness and Security space of your Twitter settings, click on Viewers and Tagging, then click on the verify field that claims Defend your Tweets.

Twitter menu option for protecting your Tweets

This locks your account. All new posts can be seen solely to your followers, however Twitter warns previous ones should be seen. When you’re right here, chances are you’ll as properly stop different individuals from discovering your Twitter account by e mail or telephone quantity and forestall individuals from tagging you in images. You may additionally need to stop future messages or notifications from Twitter, which you’ll handle from the Notifications space in your Twitter settings.

Since you might not be utilizing Twitter for some time, make sure you’ve multi-factor authentication turned on on your account. You must use both an authenticator app or a safety key, however Twitter can even allow you to use much less safe SMS codes, too. Additionally, use a password supervisor to create a singular and sophisticated password on your Twitter account. An unattended account is extra more likely to be hijacked than one you utilize day by day.

In the event you resolve to retain your Twitter account, it is a good suggestion to go away a forwarding deal with. Drop a Tweet pointing individuals to your new dwelling on Mastodon, and pin it to your account.

Step 2: Delete the Twitter App From Your Telephones and Tablets

Deleting the Twitter app out of your cell gadgets may appear scary, however it should really feel so good. In the event you’re on Android, faucet and drag the Twitter app to the highest of the display and launch it over the Uninstall icon that seems on the highest proper of the display. In the event you’re on iOS, faucet and maintain the app till it jiggles, then faucet the X on the icon’s prime left nook.

Some individuals use the Twitter direct message (DM) characteristic to speak with family and friends. Fortunately, we’re residing in a golden age of group texting choices. You should use your default messaging consumer, or go for an over-the-top possibility utilizing your knowledge plan.

WhatsApp is a well-liked selection however can be owned by Fb Meta. Notably, it gives encrypted messaging by default. My private favourite for safe messaging—and PCMag’s Editors’ Selection winner—is Sign, which places a serious emphasis on privateness and safety. The truth is, its underlying know-how is already getting used to safe WhatsApp conversations and personal Fb Messenger chats. Safety is essential in a messaging app.

Congratulations: You’ve got packed your digital baggage, and now it is time to transfer on.

Step 3: Create Your First Mastodon Account

Getting began with Mastodon is the toughest half as a result of it is not all the time clear the place to start out. That is as a result of Mastodon is not monolithic, like Fb or Twitter. As a substitute, it is a federated service extra akin to e mail. Simply as you may create an e mail account on any service you want—Proton Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, and so forth—and nonetheless ship e mail to customers on totally different suppliers, Mastodon allows you to join with certainly one of many websites working Mastodon software program, known as cases. Any person can talk with Mastodon customers on totally different cases.

Take a second to observe the brief explainer under about what Mastodon is and the way it works.

Being decentralized is nice in idea, however it may be overwhelming in follow. You would go straight to the flagship occasion Mastodon.social/about(Opens in a brand new window), however Mastodon’s creator has inspired individuals(Opens in a brand new window) to as an alternative go to JoinMastodon.org(Opens in a brand new window) and look over a listing of accessible cases to search out one which works for you. The unofficial cases.social(Opens in a brand new window) software can be useful for sifting by way of all of the choices Mastodon has to supply.

Lately, Mastodon launched official cell apps for iOS and Android. These are extremely polished experiences and do a wonderful job of strolling you thru deciding on a server and beginning up new accounts.

Signup is easy. Simply enter a username, e mail deal with, and password. Mastodon is an open-source neighborhood undertaking, so gathering details about you is not their enterprise mannequin. There’s, actually, no enterprise mannequin. The objective is to create a usable and sustainable neighborhood expertise.

See? Like an e mail deal with. More often than not, it is truncated to only @[username], however the full identify is your particular account on a selected Mastodon occasion.

The default search for Mastodon is a single-column view just like Twitter. You can even allow a multi-column format that imitates the look of Tweetdeck by toggling the Allow Superior Internet Interface possibility in Mastodon’s settings. There are different methods to view your Mastodon timeline which can be much more Twitter-like however the vanilla Mastodon.social expertise is an effective way to start out. You are leaving Twitter, in any case, so why not depart behind its interface, too?

As soon as your account is created, you may make modifications by clicking the gear icon on prime of the left-most column. Relying on which model of the Mastodon software program your occasion is working, your expertise could also be barely totally different from this. My dwelling occasion runs barely tweaked software program, so I’ve to click on Person Preferences in an extra menu.

The primary Preferences display you may see is your Profile. A lot of the choices can be acquainted to anybody who has used social media within the final decade, however a couple of choices stand out. The Require Comply with Requests possibility allows you to approve requests from individuals who need to comply with you. The Profile Metadata part allows you to add hyperlinks or private stats to your bio web page. If you wish to show a most well-liked pronoun, a hyperlink to a private web site, or batting common, that is the place to do it.

The Verification part was added as of Mastodon 2.6—the present model is 3.5.3—and it really works in another way than verified accounts on Twitter or Fb. On these platforms, the corporate verifies you in the event that they deem you worthy or should you’re keen pay. On Mastodon, including a hyperlink to your private homepage (or any web page you management) verifies your identification. The objective is not to get a flowery verify mark, it is to supply a bit extra assurance you’re who you say you’re. It is also utterly optionally available.

From Preferences, you may alter the feel and appear of the Mastodon interface to fit your fashion. Relying on the occasion you be part of, you may even see many distinctive choices right here. You can even filter out posts in languages you do not perceive. Below Preferences, the Different part allows you to resolve the default visibility on your posts (you may change it for particular person posts), and a verify field to choose out of search engine indexing.

The Filters possibility allows you to filter out key phrases or phrases ceaselessly, or for a set interval. In the event you’re sick of seeing my posts in regards to the Black Hat convention, you possibly can mute that phrase all through the convention.

Some individuals might not want to have all their posts final ceaselessly and that is the place Automated Publish Deletion is available in. This allows you to set a lifespan on your posts, after which they’re robotically deleted. Mastodon features a highly effective set of instruments to fine-tune this course of. You may choose to guard the posts you pin to your profile web page, and even posts that attain a sure variety of faves or boosts.

As you are exploring the Settings web page, make sure to cease in on the part labeled Two-Issue Auth underneath Account. Two-factor (or multi-factor) authentication makes it tougher for an attacker to take management of your account. It makes logging in a bit longer, because you usually need to kind in a particular code, however it’s properly well worth the peace of thoughts. You should use an authenticator app or a safety key with Mastodon.

Step 4: Discover Your Pals From Twitter

The issue with Twitter is not all of the individuals, it is the cutthroat pursuit of monetization schemes and capitulation to (and coddling of) polo-shirted fascists. So, discovering your mates from Twitter on Mastodon is essential.

You can begin by asking round, and by posting on Twitter that you’re going to be shifting to a brand new account. Convey some mates with you to start out a brand new on-line life!

There are third-party instruments to assist observe down your mates, however my expertise with them has been combined. Make certain you belief any web site earlier than you present it entry to your social media accounts.

Step 5: Make Your First Publish

The far-left column is your place to begin. Within the center, a textual content field invitations you to put in writing what’s in your thoughts. You might have 500 characters to play with—and perhaps extra, relying on the occasion you be part of—so write as a lot or as little as you need. While you’re able to ship, simply click on the button to put up.

Early in Mastodon’s historical past, posts have been known as “Toots,” however official branding has moved away from this terminology. Now, posts are simply known as posts. The supervisor of my dwelling occasion determined to stay with the Toot nomenclature, as you may see.

You may add a picture by clicking the digicam icon, pasting a picture out of your clipboard, or dragging a photograph over the web page. When a picture is added, you must add an outline for the visually impaired. A useful software will auto-detect textual content within the picture for you.

In case your picture is NSFW, has some content material individuals may not need to see (comparable to meals, medicine, and so forth), or is healthier revealed as a part of a gag, click on the eyeball icon, which hides the picture in individuals’s feeds. They merely need to click on to disclose it.

Equally, the CW icon allows you to create a Content material Warning. It opens a brand new textual content subject above the principle subject, the place you may write a warning about what you are going to share. With the ability to choose in to viewing content material is a advantage of utilizing Mastodon, so it is a good suggestion to make use of CWs continuously. For instance, when discussing delicate subjects like psychological well being or politics, I all the time use a CW so individuals can select whether or not to learn it. I typically use a CW after I’m speaking about motion pictures or TV exhibits I like. Not as a result of it is harmful content material, however as a result of some individuals simply may not care to learn my ramblings about Star Trek. A put up with a CW will solely present what’s within the CW subject in individuals’s feeds. They need to click on to learn the complete put up.

Lastly, the globe icon allows you to select how seen your put up is. The default possibility is Public, that means it should seem in all timelines. (You may change the default visibility in Settings.) Unlisted means your put up will solely seem within the timelines of different customers, not in public feeds just like the one on the Mastodon.social/about web page. Followers-only hides your put up from anybody apart from your followers. The final possibility, Talked about Individuals Solely, is sort of a DM on Twitter. The put up will solely be seen by the individuals you point out by their usernames within the put up. Be aware that DMs will not be end-to-end encrypted on Mastodon, however that could be altering sooner or later.

A great first put up would most likely be an introduction! Say who you’re and use the hashtags #intro, #introduction, or #introductions. Checklist your pursuits as hashtags, so your put up will seem in searches and timelines. My intro talked about #journalism and #infosec.

Step 6: Get to Know Your New Residence

A search bar above the put up textual content subject is each extra and fewer highly effective than you’d anticipate. To forestall harassment, Mastodon can’t be looked for arbitrary names or phrases—as Twitter can. #hashtags and usernames may be searched, in addition to the particular URL of a put up or a person’s web page. You must use #hashtags on posts you need to be seen by different customers.

It exhibits you all the general public posts in your occasion. The globe icon pulls up the Federated Timeline, which exhibits all the general public posts in all of the Mastodon cases that join with yours. The gear icon opens the preferences pane, and the far-right icon logs you out.

A fast observe on federation: whilst you can talk with nearly another Mastodon person, not all Mastodon cases “federate” completely with one another. The explanations are difficult(Opens in a brand new window), however don’t be concerned an excessive amount of about it. Discover and comply with the individuals whose posts you actually need to see.

Every Mastodon put up has 4 icons that can most likely be acquainted to anybody who’s used Twitter. The arrow icon allows you to reply to the put up in a thread. The arrows in an oblong circuit icon allows you to enhance a put up, which is identical as retweeting or reblogging. Be aware which you could solely enhance a put up, you may’t enhance with a remark hooked up. That is by design. The star icon allows you to mark a put up as a favourite, and the neighboring three-dots button exhibits superior actions you may take. Two of observe: Delete and Redraft deletes your put up and locations a replica of the deleted put up’s textual content in a brand new subject for modifying, and Mute dialog turns off notifications for a specific put up. That is useful if individuals resolve to have a dialog within the responses to certainly one of your posts.

The far-right column has most of the similar controls because the far-left one, and the others are self-explanatory. The Residence column exhibits posts from all of the individuals you comply with. Click on the Settings icon and you may conceal boosts and replies, should you select. Be aware which you could view all of the posts that you just favourite and bookmark from right here.

As in Twitter, Mastodon’s Notifications column exhibits interactions together with your posts. On my occasion, it is damaged out by replies, faves, boosts, replies from individuals I comply with, and new followers. The All part exhibits all interactions together with your account and posts in a single feed. Click on the settings icon to vary what alerts you obtain and the way you obtain them.

Step 7: Edit Your Expertise

Every occasion, Mastodon.social included, has totally different requirements for allowable content material and conduct. Some cases permit all the things, others have volunteer directors and codes of conduct(Opens in a brand new window). The broad and highly effective administrator instruments are one of many attracts of Mastodon. Admins can, for instance, block total cases from connecting with theirs, if a specific occasion turns into a identified drawback.

Every person can even mute, report, or block customers and domains. If a specific occasion is bothering you, simply click on on any person from that occasion, and click on the three-button menu on their bio web page, after which click on “Block area [domain name].” Additionally, the Filters part of the Settings menu allows you to filter out phrases or phrases.

A great tool for managing your expertise on Mastodon are Lists. These are lists of customers which you could view in a devoted feed. I’ve a listing of my closest mates so I may be certain I do not miss any of their posts. You may create a brand new Checklist from the far proper column.

Step 8: Begin Your New Life on Mastodon

When you’re snug on Mastodon.social, it is time to survey the big neighborhood of Mastodon customers. Mastodon’s decentralized nature is certainly one of its most unusual elements. That mentioned, a couple of monumental cases maintain the majority of Mastodon’s customers. Whereas it may be a bit scary to maneuver to a small occasion, extra cases and extra customers on these cases, make Mastodon extra resilient and various.

Every Mastodon occasion has its personal URL, so that you may be logged into as many as you need concurrently. I lately moved from mastodon.social to infosec.alternate(Opens in a brand new window), which is extra targeted on safety points. I even have an account at tenforward.social(Opens in a brand new window), to speak about Star Trek.

Typically, an occasion has to close down. Most occasion admins are good about offering ample warning and help to members shifting their occasion. Altering cases can appear actually scary, however it’s a pure a part of Mastodon’s expertise.

OpenAI awarded 0 million US defense contract

OpenAI is officially on the Pentagon’s payroll. The Department of Defence announced a $200 million contract with OpenAI to provide the US government with new artificial intelligence tools, including those used for proactive cyber defense.

In a post outlining its latest contracts, the DoD said that OpenAI “will develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains.” The work will primarily be completed in the Washington, DC region with an estimated completion date of July 2026.

OpenAI said in a new blog post that the DoD contract is its first partnership under a new initiative to provide its AI technology to workers across federal, state, and local governments. The company is offering custom models for national security on “a limited basis,” according to the announcement, with OpenAI saying that all use cases must comply with its policies and guidelines. OpenAI’s current usage policy bans its services from being used to “develop or use weapons” and “injure others or destroy property.”

“This contract, with a $200 million ceiling, will bring OpenAI’s industry-leading expertise to help the Defense Department identify and prototype how frontier AI can transform its administrative operations, from improving how service members and their families get health care, to streamlining how they look at program and acquisition data, to supporting proactive cyber defense,” OpenAI said.

This isn’t the first time OpenAI has bedded down with the military, having entered a partnership with Anduril Industries in December 2024 to integrate its AI software into the defense tech company’s counterdrone systems. The new one-year DoD contract is antithetical to earlier versions of OpenAI’s terms of service that banned its technology from being used for “military and warfare” — a prohibition removed by the company last year.

Cost and pricing expectations for the Mercedes Vision V

While Mercedes-Benz has not officially announced the price for the production version of the Vision V, early reports and industry speculation suggest that this luxury van could cost around $200,000, especially for models equipped with all the high-end features seen in the concept.

For context, the current V-Class starts at about $60,000 in Germany and can exceed $100,000 with options, so it’s reasonable to expect the Vision V to command a significant premium, positioning it well above existing luxury van offerings. As with most high-end vehicles, the final price will likely depend on customization and selected features, but the Vision V is clearly aimed at buyers seeking exclusivity and the ultimate in automotive luxury.

Reddit will help advertisers turn ‘positive’ posts into ads

Reddit is launching a new feature for advertisers that slots positive posts from Reddit users right under their ads.

The new alpha feature, called Conversation Summary Add-ons, “dynamically integrates positive content from Reddit users directly below an advertiser’s creative, putting community conversations front-and-center in the user experience and blending AI-driven efficiency with real human perspectives,” according to a post from Reddit.

As shown by Reddit, you’ll be able to scroll through the posts that appear under an ad. You’ll also see a short summary of what Reddit users are saying about the advertiser. Jackbox Games and Lucid are alpha testers of the feature.

Powering this new feature is an “engine” Reddit calls Reddit Community Intelligence. According to the company, Reddit Community Intelligence can turn the platform’s more than 22 billion posts and comments “into structured intelligence for smarter marketing decisions.”

As part of today’s announcements, which Reddit is making alongside the Cannes Lions festival, the company is also introducing a “scalable, AI-powered social listening tool” called Reddit Insights. “Informed by proprietary metadata, it provides precise, real-time insights that help marketers confidently plan campaigns, validate creative ideas, and make smarter business decisions,” Reddit says.
