Border Patrol finds 81 pounds of cocaine in SUV's dashboard

A K-9 unit helped Border Patrol agents seize more than 80 pounds of cocaine that was hidden in an SUV’s dashboard this week.

The vehicle was pulled over on the 15 Freeway near Temecula at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release.

“During the vehicle stop, a Border Patrol canine team conducted an air sniff of the vehicle and the canine alerted to the possible presence of narcotics,” the release added. “A cursory search of the vehicle revealed what appeared to be cellophane wrapped packages consistent with narcotics smuggling.”

Fire guts historic baseball field used in 'A League of Their Own,' other movies

A historic ballpark in Ontario used in the filming of several popular baseball movies went up in flames overnight.

The fire was reported around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Jay Littleton Ball Park in the 1000 block of North Grove Avenue.

Ontario Fire Department crews found heavy smoke and fire from the stadium and the dugout when they arrived.

The extent of the damage to the ballpark and whether it could be salvaged was unknown.

“It’s upsetting … This ballpark has been a part of the city’s baseball history. I have two young kids in our league and the dream has always been that they get to play at Jay Littleton,” Ontario Eastern Little League President Aaron Matthiesen said.

The field was used in the filming of the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own,” which featured a star-filled cast including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna. The movie was directed by the late Penny Marshall.

It was also used in the movies Eight Men Out and The Babe Ruth Story, according to the City of Ontario’s website.

Two people are in custody while police continue to search for the driver of a suspected stolen vehicle who led authorities in a chase that ended in the area of East Los Angeles.

It’s unclear exactly what time officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollenbeck Division initiated the pursuit, but just before 11 p.m., Sky5 located the suspect in the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway.

The driver transitioned to northbound lanes of the 710 Freeway before exiting at Ramona Boulevard and continuing the chase on surface streets.

Alleged check forger, jewelry thief targeted elderly in Southern California

A 34-year-old woman from the harbor region of Los Angeles has been arrested and charged with four felonies after allegations she was stealing from elderly clients whom she worked for as a caregiver, officials announced earlier this week.

In a news release, detectives with the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department say Isela “Izzy” Ruiz, a resident of Wilmington, forged checks stolen from elderly victims, cashed them and stole jewelry from their homes.

An investigation into the 34-year-old led to her arrest on Aug. 18 in the city of Carson, police said.

The following day, authorities at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Ruiz with four felony counts in connection with the investigation.

Investigators believe there are likely more victims and ask anyone with information about this case to contact PVEPD Det. Joe Marino at 310-378-4211 by email at jmarino@pvestates.org.
