Four people, including a 14-year-old boy, were hospitalized Sunday night after a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles.  

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of 51^st Street and Avalon Boulevard just before 8 p.m. in the South Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, LAPD confirmed to KTLA.  

Police said four victims were crossing the street when an unknown number of suspects in a vehicle started firing at them with a handgun before fleeing the scene.  

Footage of the aftermath showed a heavy presence of police at the scene, along with a dozen evidence markers marking shell casings in the street. 

Three of the victims suffering from gunshot wounds were able to get to the hospital on their own, while the 14-year-old was rushed to the hospital by medical personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department.  

All of the victims were listed in stable condition. 

The suspects, according to police, were only described as males.  

A motive for the shooting is unknown. No further details were made available.  

L.A.’s Very Own KTLA 5 helped the Los Angeles Police Department take a suspect into custody on Sunday. 

LAPD Central Bureau Assistant Commanding Operations Officer Lillian L. Carranza confirmed early Sunday afternoon that a suspect featured in a video published to the KTLA website, YouTube and social media pages was caught after an “alert citizen” recognized the man on the news and called police. 

The video in question depicted him kicking down the door of a home in L.A.’s Atwood neighborhood.

“After receiving the LAPD community crime alert and watching the [KTLA 5] morning news, a citizen called 911,” Carranza said on X.  “Officers quickly responded and arrested the suspect.” 

His name was not released, but he was described as a 44-year-old Hispanic man. The exact location of where he was arrested was also not disclosed.

The homeowner who provided the original video to KTLA says it depicted the eighth time the man had attempted to break into their residence and the first time he was able to make it inside. They were eventually able to chase him out of their home and call the police but remain understandably shaken.

The suspect connected to a series of hot prowl burglaries and connected sexual assault in East Hollywood and Silver Lake early Friday morning is still outstanding, Carranza said. 

Anyone in those neighborhoods who observes suspicious activity is urged to call 911. 

Legendary KTLA 5 entertainment reporter Sam Rubin was honored with a posthumous award at the 76^th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. 

The L.A. Area Emmy Awards, which honor locally produced programs in categories including live and breaking news coverage, crime and social issues, the arts and more, was hosted by Michaela Pereira at the Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Wilshire on Saturday night. 

KTLA was the winner of two awards: Best Live Special Events News Coverage for the 2023 WeHo Pride Parade (given to 14 distinguished KTLA producers, directors, hosts and reporters) and Best Entertainment News Story for KTLA 5 Morning News’ coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike; the latter award was bestowed upon the late Sam Rubin. 

In addition to taking home the award for entertainment news story, Sam was also honored with the 76^th Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award, which recognized his legacy of more than 30 years of entertainment news reporting for KTLA. 

KTLA 5’s Jessica Holmes and Eric Spillman presented the Governors Award to Sam’s children, Darcy and Colby, during Saturday night’s ceremony. 

“What he did every morning on the air was amazing,” Spillman said.  “I would ask him ‘Please save the show’ and he would joke ‘I’m not sure I can,’ but invariably, he did.”  

Spillman then thanked the Academy for honoring Sam before Darcy and Colby were introduced to a standing ovation.
