Lightning strike at Arizona's Horseshoe Bend injures 2 tourists, National Park Service says
A lightning strike has injured two tourists who were standing near the rim of the iconic Horseshoe Bend in Arizona’s Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the National Park Service says.
The incident happened on Monday around 4 p.m. and involved two women – a 22-year-old from the Netherlands and a 23-year-old from Australia.
“Visitors are advised to use caution while visiting exposed outdoor areas and be aware of changing weather conditions. Thunderstorms are most frequent and severe during the monsoon season, which is typically mid-June through September in Arizona,” the NPS said in a statement. “If you hear thunder, you are at risk of getting struck by lightning and should immediately seek shelter in a vehicle or building.”
The NPS said the two tourists “sustained injuries” in Monday’s incident and were airlifted to St. George Regional Hospital in Utah.

The NPS describes Horseshoe Bend as a “social media darling” and one of the “most recognized and visited places in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.”

“Below the rim, the Colorado River makes a wide sweep around a sandstone escarpment. On its long downward journey to the sea, the river meandered, sometimes making wide bends, but always seeking the path of least resistance. Around 5 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau uplifted and the meandering rivers that crossed the ancient landscape were trapped in their beds,” it says on its website. “Over time, the rivers cut through the uplifted layers of sandstone.
“Here at Horseshoe Bend, the Colorado River created a roughly 1,000 ft. deep, 270º horseshoe-shaped bend in Glen Canyon,” it adds.

Thieves targeted South Bay pharmacy for codeine, owner says; Beverly Hills pharmacy also hit
Four pharmacy burglaries were reported across the L.A. area in a 48-hour period, including at one location that was targeted just over a month ago.
The owner of LAX Pharmacy, which lies in the 4000 block of Lennox Boulevard in Lennox, told KTLA on Wednesday that his store had last been hit around 40 days ago, which was around when they got their last shipment of codeine cough suppressant.
He said that six suspects bypassed his recently installed security measures around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday and broke into the store to steal more codeine. Police were not able to confirm what, if anything, was stolen.
The Lennox burglary occurred shortly before another pharmacy in Beverly Hills was hit by multiple thieves. Preliminary information indicates that incident took place at Pharmacy 90210 on Wilshire Boulevard around 2:45 a.m. and involved four suspects who were said to have stolen an unknown amount of narcotics.
Those suspects then purportedly fled in a Dodge Durango Hellcat and lost officers after a pursuit; however, police confirmed that one person was detained in connection with the Beverly Hills burglary, but they did not release any further information.
Wednesday morning’s burglaries come on the heels of two other pharmacies being burglarized in Sun Valley and Valley Village.
It is not known if any of the incidents are related.

Machete-wielding suspect leads police on pursuit through San Bernardino County
A machete-wielding man was arrested after leading officers on a pursuit through San Bernardino County Tuesday.
Upland Police initially responded to a disturbance at a home on the 200 block of North 10th Avenue.
The male suspect, who was not identified, had kicked in the front door and threatened two victims inside, police said.
While carrying a machete, the suspect reportedly threatened to kill the victims before striking them with the weapon, according to officers.
Both victims were left with lacerations but survived the attack.
The suspect fled the scene. Police responding to the area spotted the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to pull him over, but he refused to cooperate, leading police on a pursuit.
The chase eventually ended after the suspect crashed into a patrol car. He exited the car and attempted to run away but was “quickly captured and arrested,” Upland Police said.
The man was taken into custody on attempted murder charges. Police confirmed the victims knew the suspect, but no further details were released. His identity was not released as the case remains under investigation.

Arizona Kamala Harris rally speakers court 'John McCain Republicans' support; man brings border map for VP
GLENDALE, Ariz. – With Arizona front and center in the 2024 election, introductory speakers at Vice President Harris’ rally in Glendale made overtures to moderate Republicans by invoking one of the GOP’s past presidential nominees.
Rep. Gregory Stanton, D-Ariz., who represents the eastern Phoenix suburbs, called on “John McCain Republicans” to support the Harris-Walz ticket, portraying it as the moderate option.
Mesa Republican Mayor John Giles echoed those comments, saying that as a lifelong member of the GOP, he does not recognize his party.
“It has been taken over by extremists,” Giles said, adding it also has forced “people from the [political] center” out of the party.

“You don’t owe a damn thing to that political party,” Giles added, saying it would be “displaced loyalty” to support Donald Trump.
“In the spirit of the great Sen. John McCain, please join me in putting country over party and stopping Donald Trump and protecting the rule of law, protecting our constitution and protecting the democracy of our great country.”
McCain, who died in 2018, had an icy relationship with Trump, especially after McCain signaled a thumbs-down after casting the deciding vote against repealing ObamaCare.
The two often traded barbs, with McCain withdrawing any future support for Trump after the release of the Billy Bush tape during the 2016 cycle and Trump commenting on McCain’s service in Vietnam.
9/11 TERRORIST FEARS TRUMP WILL GET ELECTED AND EXECUTE HIM
On Friday, Giles, who remains an office-holding Republican, called Harris the “capable, just and fair leader our country deserves.”
He also criticized Trump’s focus on the border crisis, claiming his party’s nominee is not trying to fix the crisis but use it for his “own political purposes.”
Of “John McCain Republicans” who may be at Friday’s rally, Stanton added, “We are glad that you are here, and we are excited to earn your support.”
Other mayors who spoke included Tempe’s Corey Woods and Phoenix’s Kate Gallego, the ex-wife of Democratic senatorial candidate Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., whom officials also urged support for against former news anchor Kari Lake.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
Outside the rally, John from Avondale stood in line with Harris-Walz supporters while holding a hand-drawn poster resembling a Google Maps GPS graphic depicting the “fastest route” from the Desert Diamond Arena to the southern border at Nogales.
“Too many Americans are getting killed from illegals from across our border because it’s so wide open,” said John, who added he did not expect to be allowed in with the poster.
“Not only that, but sooner or later, they’re going to start taking all our jobs.”
Appearing to address the rallygoers around him, John quipped, “And I don’t know about all these people if they have jobs, but sooner or later that’s going to happen.
“Not only that, your prices are going to go up with taxes because someone has to support 20 million illegal aliens, and that ain’t going to be me. That’s why I’m not voting for Miss Harris.”
Fox News Digital’s Sophia Compton contributed to this report.
