Baseball Comes Up Short In Extras At #13 Virginia, 4-3 – University of Massachusetts Athletics
Gervasi led the team with two hits in four at bats, including a home run, while recording a team-best two RBI. Matt Travisano and Jack Beverly had one hit each on the afternoon, as Kevin Skagerlind and Carter Hanson scored one run apiece.
After three scoreless innings, Virginia got on the board first as a walk with the bases loaded allowed a runner to cross the plate. A ground out RBI pushed another Cavalier across the dish to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
In the sixth, Skagerlind stood on first after getting walked, before stealing second. With two outs, Hanson reached the base on a fielding error by UVA’s second baseman, allowing Skagerlind to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. A new pitcher took over on the mound before Gervasi stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Minutemen the 3-2 lead.
UMass maintained its lead throughout two and a half innings, saving the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth as Hanson threw the ball from right field to Michael Toth at home to record the out. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth helped Virginia knot the game up at 3-3, sending the contest into extra innings.
With one out, the Cavaliers singled to left center field, before the runner stole second. Another single through the right sent the runner on second home to score the game-winning run.
Jacob Terwilliger (0-1) received the loss for UMass, giving up one run on three hits and walking one in one complete inning. Aidan Teel (2-0) earned the win for Virginia, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out one in one inning pitched. Max LeBlanc started on the mound for Massachusetts, tossing four innings, before Leif Bigelow took over on the hill for 4.1 innings. The Cavaliers utilized five pitchers throughout the contest.
Massachusetts and No. 13 Virginia continue its series on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+/ACCNX.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — A man wanted in a North Carolina murder investigation was arrested in Grayson County, Virginia, on Friday, authorities said.
53-year-old Matthew Jared Vukmer was taken into custody without incident around 5:30 p.m. in the Little River section of the county, according to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say that on Friday, around 2:30 p.m., a call came in from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina about a suspect wanted for first-degree murder who was possibly in the Little River area of Grayson County.

Investigators say they immediately began preparing search warrants, and the sheriff’s office, along with the Virginia State Police, launched drones to survey and monitor the suspect’s activity.
Authorities said that after they determined the wanted individual, Vukmer, was at a location on Windwood Lane, deputies were sent to the address. Lt. Jody Poole and Deputy Adam Bolling then took Vukmer into custody without incident.

Vukmer was charged with being a fugitive from justice and is being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail pending extradition to North Carolina to face murder charges, according to authorities.

Governor Abigail Spanberger ordered that the flags be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth in honor of Jackson. The civil rights leader died on Tuesday. He was 84.

“We honor his decades of service as a minister, community leader, and international civil rights leader,” Spanberger wrote in the order.
The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset.
Jackson’s family confirmed he died at home, surrounded by family. He was battling the neurodegenerative disorder Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Lavinia Brown, and their five children: Santita Jackson, former Rep. Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.), Jonathan Luther Jackson, Yusef DuBois Jackson, Esq., and Jacqueline Lavinia Jackson, Jr.

Jackson was known as a protege of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and helped lead the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
