Texas Gov. Greg Abbott backing candidate Chris Spencer for Texas House District 1

TEXARKANA, Texas (KSLA) – Governor Greg Abbott made a stop in Texarkana Wednesday morning (May 22) as part of a Get Out the Vote event.

Gov. Abbott was in Texarkana campaigning for Chris Spencer, who is one of the candidates in the May 28 runoff election for the House District 1 seat. He is a Cass County businessman and Republican running against Gary VanDeaver, also a Republican.

The governor made remarks in Spencer’s favor from Lost Pizza Co. on Gibson Lane.

“And what you need for your family and your future, you need someone to go to Austin, Texas and fight for you. And that is what Chris Spencer is going to do,” Gov. Abbott said.

“As your state representative, I will always pray for wisdom and blessings from the Lord and to glorify Him in what I say and what I do,” Spencer said.

The governor spent most of his time blasting the Biden administration and policies, saying he has failed the state of Texas.

“Texas has been known to fight for what we know is right, and we continue that same fighting attitude today as we are fighting back against Joe Biden’s reckless policies that are destroying the United States of America,” he said.

Spencer and Gov. Abbott say now is time to get the vote out.

“Do not put off [voting] tomorrow,” they said.

Early voting is underway, and Election Day is May 28.

Texas mass shooting as multiple people hit at Juneteenth event

At least six people have been injured in a shooting during a Juneteenth festival in Texas, according to authorities.

Round Rock Police said officers were investigating a shooting that took place at Old Settlers Park on Saturday night. “This is an active scene, and the investigation is ongoing. Please avoid the area,” the department wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Austin-Travis County EMS wrote that it responded to “a mutual aid request for a reported shooting involving multiple patients.”

Medics transported four adults and two children to local hospitals, “all with potentially serious injuries,” the department wrote on X.

Videos posted on social media showed a huge police presence at the scene after the shooting. One clip reportedly shows police officers surrounding a possible suspect.

Police said they have no suspects in custody, CBS Austin reported.

Newsweek has contacted the Round Rock Police Department for comment via social media.

Texas voters cast ballots in runoff election

Voters went to the polls Saturday to make their final selections in 11 races that required runoffs after the May 4 local elections.

Most of the races were for city council seats in suburban communities around Dallas-Fort Worth. In Dallas County, the only races were for Irving City Council District 4 and Lewisville City Council, Place 2. You can see full results at dallasnews.com/election-results/.

Most of the attention on May 4 was on Dallas’ $1.25 billion bond program that overwhelmingly passed on a day that saw low voter turnout in the city. Turnout on Saturday was expected to be light, as well.

Among the races on the ballot: Two city council races in Allen, and single council races in Euless, North Richland Hills, Kennedale, Anna, Midlothian, Fate, Irving and Lewisville. Also being decided was a seat on the Ellis Appraisal District board of directors.

Texas man electrocuted in hot tub at Mexican resort; officials blame wiring

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A man from El Paso, Texas, has died after being electrocuted in a hot tub at a private resort in Mexico on Tuesday evening, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office of Justice for the State of Sonora.

The General Prosecutor’s Office for the State of Sonora said the victim, identified as Jorge N., 43, was in a hot tub at the Puerto Peñasco resort when he was electrocuted due to a possible failure in the wiring.

The victim’s wife, identified as Lizzette N., 35, was also in the hot tub and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Lizzette was transferred to a hospital in Mexico and told that her burns were consistent with electric shock, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office. She was transported to the United States, where she was in critical condition as of Wednesday.

The General Prosecutor’s Office says a witness familiar with the couple said she noticed the couple was in the hot tub and were not moving.

The witness told agents at the scene that she tried to enter the hot tub after the couple was non-responsive. However, as she tried to enter the water, she was shocked. The witness then called for help.

Video shared by Nexstar’s KTSM appears to show a crowd gathering around the hot tub after the incident, some of whom sounded to be screaming.

Mexican officials are currently investigating the incident.

Family friends have since created a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of Jorge’s transportation and Lizzette’s medical bills.
