Smooth spring continues for Nathan Eovaldi, likely the Texas Rangers’ opening day starter

TEMPE, Ariz. — We’re getting to the point in spring training where the days start to run together.

Nathan Eovaldi started on Monday for the Texas Rangers. He’ll start again Sunday. Or Monday. He thinks. He’ll have another spring training start after that. Or maybe not. It was all getting a little confusing to him after pitching into the fifth in a 15-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Good thing none of those days really matter.

What does is that all signs lead to Eovaldi starting March 28 in the season opener against the Chicago Cubs. Not that anybody is saying that. A year ago, MLB kind of did a group reveal of opening day starters, so maybe that’s in the offing. But, really, with Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle headed for the IL and Jordan Montgomery still stuck in free agent purgatory, who else could it be besides the guy who went 5-0 with a 2.95 in the 2023 postseason?

In a lot of ways, Monday marked Eovaldi’s big dress rehearsal for the opener. He threw 84 pitches, used his full and varied repertoire, and worked into the fifth against a fairly representative Angels team. Well, as representative a team as the Angels could field with Shohei Ohtani now a Dodger and Mike Trout taking a day off.

His next scheduled start, most likely on Sunday, will be in a minor league game to keep him from facing the Cubs just 10 days before the season opener. After that, one final shorter tuneup on March 22 or 23.

“To me, this was kind of like that last one because you never know who is going to show up on the back fields [for minor league exhibitions],” said Eovaldi, who started three openers for Boston from 2019-22. “There were a lot of positives there and some negatives, too. But I felt really good physically. It’s just the little things that need fine-tuning.”

Eovaldi’s biggest issue was four walks, three of which came with two outs. His last walk forced his exit from the game. Two came after he tried to get back into counts with 2-0 cutters that ran too far in.

“Ultimately, I think the walks cost me an inning,” said Eovaldi, who had allowed just one walk in nine previous innings between “A” and “B” games. “I try to refrain from doing that. So that’s a little frustrating. I’ve got to do a better job of attacking.”

Pope Francis calls Texas AG Ken Paxton’s attacks on El Paso’s Annunciation House ‘madness’

The Texas attorney general’s attack on El Paso’s Annunciation House is “madness,” Pope Francis said during a “60 Minutes” interview.

Pope Francis was asked specifically during a May 19 interview with CBS “60 Minutes” reporter Norah O’Donnell about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filing a lawsuit against the El Paso Catholic nonprofit organization, whose goals are to help immigrants seeking asylum.

“That is madness, sheer madness,” Pope Francis said. “To close the border and leave them there, that is madness. The migrant has to be received. Thereafter, you see how you’re going to deal with them. Maybe you have to send them back. I don’t know. But each case ought to be considered humanely.”

The Pope’s comments come after Paxton filed a lawsuit demanding the Annunciation House be shut down. Paxton claimed the nonprofit organization is a “stash house” protecting migrants illegally in the U.S.

The Annunciation House has offered hospitality to migrants and refugees in El Paso for decades. The volunteer organization has played a critical role in helping migrants released by Border Patrol officials who are seeking asylum in the U.S. or other forms of immigration relief.

Annunciation House director Ruben Garcia said it was “gratifying” to hear Pope Francis speak about the importance of organizations such as the Annunciation House to provide humane services to migrants fleeing their country and asking for help.

“The Pope responded ‘that’s crazy,’” Garcia said. “It is gratifying to me that what the Pope is emphasizing is not only the relationship Annunciation House has, but really in the face of refugees all over the world that are fleeing their countries because they’re afraid or they can’t sustain their families and they’re crossing borders all over the world. It is crazy that organizations, NGOs, churches are trying to do the humanitarian work of receiving and providing the basic human needs to people, and that somebody would want to stop that. That is just crazy.”

Paxton’s mission of shutting down the Annunciation House began in February when he sent three lawyers to the Annunciation House demanding the nonprofit turn over the documents. The documents included names, dates of births, medical history, medications needed by the migrants, and the names of the migrants’ family members.

Annunciation House officials declined to release the documents and filed a lawsuit seeking a judge’s ruling on what documents the nonprofit must legally release.

Paxton responded by filing a counter lawsuit claiming the Annunciation House is a “stash house” protecting migrants illegally in the U.S.

The lawsuits remain pending with a hearing a expected to be held in June, Garcia said.

For Garcia, the Pope’s comments show the work being done by Annunciation House, and other nonprofits across the global, is the morally right actions to address mass migration crisis. Garcia enjoys the support of a powerful world leader.

“It’s affirming,” Garcia said. “It’s affirming for me. It’s affirming for many other people who work tirelessly, who get up everyday to make sure that meals are prepared, that cots have sheets, that care packages put together, that travel plans are made, that the door is opened. It’s very affirming. The Pope is obviously a very powerful voice when it comes to the moral issues facing our world and to know that he’s got your back is truly gratifying.”

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Rivalries in postseason games often tend to bring out the absolute best in most players. The combination sometimes serves as a great equalizer.

That was certainly the case Saturday night as heavily -favored Texas A&M had to scratch and claw its way to a 4-2 11-inning win over rival Texas to advance to the driver’s seat at the College Station Regional.

It didn’t take long for everyone, including Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle, to realize that the Aggies were in for a dogfight against the Longhorns.

Quieter overnight, more storms possible Sunday night

NORTH TEXAS – Welp. The storm season isn’t done with us yet, even when our storm chances are only isolated and there aren’t any major markers for activity.

The remnants of a storm system to the west overnight sparked new storm development in North Texas on Saturday morning, and we had a few isolated severe storms Saturday afternoon in North Texas. There was a “mini microburst” around 1 p.m. that produced 70-80 mph winds in Irving and damaged the Irving Police Department’s northern station. It’s barely discernable on radar – looking like nothing more than some gusty winds – but sure enough the damage was done.

That storm tracked east/southeast, but another storm behind it tracked farther southeast into Kaufman and eventually Henderson and Anderson counties, producing some moderate to large size hail. (reports of tennis ball to baseball size hail in Malakoff).

2.png

All of this activity is moving east Saturday night, and I do not anticipate storms or a severe threat overnight. In fact, most of Sunday looks good too.

I’ve got isolated storm chances in the afternoon, but I’m more concerned about what we might see heading late Sunday night into Monday morning.

4.png

While I don’t believe this warrants a weather alert just yet, we’ll have to watch out for storms approaching from West Texas late in the evening.

5.png

I think these storms will be moving into our western counties between 10 p.m. and midnight Sunday into Monday.

6.png

As these storms get closer to North Texas, they’re expected to move into a more capped environment and weaken. But with all the rain we’ve had, the flooding threat will certainly be there. And if these storms don’t weaken, then a wind and hail threat would be there too.

7.png

If this does in fact materialize, we’ll have to watch to see if the atmosphere is worked over enough to limit storm activity into Monday. For now, short-range models are suggesting we could see more storm development around that initial overnight round.

For now, I have rain chances highest overnight Sunday into early Monday. By Tuesday, the rain/storm chances drop to 20%. It will be warm and windy Tuesday, and the heat stays on through the end of the week and into next weekend.
