Florida State softball struggled offensively and defensively against the Oklahoma Sooners in its loss in Game 1. Now the Seminoles are in a must-win situation to stay in the NCAA Softball Tournament.

No. 15 Florida State softball couldn’t afford any mistakes.

Especially against the defending Women’s College World Series champs, No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners.

On Thursday evening, FSU dropped to OU 11-3 in Game 1 of the NCAA super regional. The game ended in a run-rule, following a walk that secured the Sooners’ victory.

With missed opportunities to score on base, the Sooners (50-6) took advantage of the Seminoles’ (45-14) costly errors.

The Seminoles only recorded four hits but managed to find ways to get on base. Oklahoma’s defense was not rattled.

The miscues on base led to missed opportunities for the Seminoles to make it a competitive game. Even when the Seminoles loaded the bases twice, Oklahoma’s defense would follow through with two different double plays, making the Seminoles settle for less than what they would’ve hoped.

The Seminoles have been battle-tested all year, going through adversity such as injuries and starting five freshmen.

Head coach Lonni Alameda downplayed any pressure her Seminoles face going into the best-of-three series, noting that they must execute defensively despite being at a disadvantage.

“So I don’t feel they feel the pressure of producing, and we even talked about it earlier that they just got to keep doing what they’re doing,” Alameda said. “And we have a very potent lineup, so you know if they can do that any inning, good things can happen.”

The Seminoles, led by Devyn Flaherty, were able to tie it at two in the top third. Flaherty finished the night with two RBI following an RBI single from the senior. Jahni Kerr gave FSU’s third and final run in the Top 5 to extend the game for one more inning.

FSU softball’s pitching defense struggled against Oklahoma

Oklahoma hit four home runs on its home field.

Half of them came from infielder Alyssa Britto, who led the Sooners with three RBI after the game. Tiare Jennings and Kinzie Hansen also homered for the Sooners.

“I mean, we have to keep them off balance, and so we’ll make an adjustment tonight,” Alameda said. “(That) is making sure we do a better job mixing that change-up in there.”

Freshman Ashtyn Danley was the losing pitcher. In two innings, she allowed five runs, six hits and three hits. Alameda emphasized that the pitching defense must improve.

“You know, it’s been a pitching defense thing all season long,” Alameda said. “So I don’t think that we can hang our heads by any means on the outside. Like, we’ve got to be able to make some adjustments.

“We’ll go back and watch the tape learn try and see if we could be a little bit better tomorrow.”

What’s next for FSU softball?

To keep their WCWS hopes alive, the Seminoles must avoid a clean sweep by the Sooners and force it to Game 3.

FSU will return to Loves’ Field on Friday at 8 p.m.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Memorial Day is coming up soon, and there are many different events in the Southwest Oklahoma area to help celebrate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In Duncan, the Simmons Center is holding a Memorial Day 5K Fun Run on Saturday, May 25, for those who are looking for activities to do on Memorial Day Weekend. People can register for $30 if they have a membership, or $40 if they don’t. It starts at 9 a.m. just north of the Simmons Center at the Haliburton Pavilion.

There will be a flag salute followed by the National Anthem, and after that, there will be a prayer. Runners are asked to wear red, white, and blue.

Coming up on Memorial Day, the Comanche Indian Veterans Association will be holding its 48th Annual Memorial Day Service. It starts at 11 a.m. at Watchetaker Hall and the CIVA Court of Honor.

It’ll start with a prayer, followed by the National Anthem, the Comanche Flag Song, and the Memorial Song. After that, there will be roll calls with multiple guest speakers. Lunch will be provided at the end of the event as well.

Sunset Memorial Gardens will also be holding its 35th Memorial Day Ceremony in Lawton with Mayor Stan Booker as a speaker. It starts at 2 p.m. and there will be an ensemble by the 77th Army Band.

Over in Elgin, a Memorial Day service will be held by America’s Veteran Supporters on Memorial Day itself. It starts at 10 a.m. at the Fort Sill National Cemetery with Chaplain Lisa Northway as a guest speaker..

Chickasha will also have its own service on Monday at The Grady County Veterans Memorial. The service starts at 11 a.m. with lunch being served at 12:30 p.m. at the Chickasha Elks Lodge. Gary McNatt, a Marine veteran, will be the guest speaker for the event.

Florida State softball swept its way through the Tallahassee Regional, taking down Chattanooga, UCF and Auburn.

Now, they will face a familiar face in the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners.

Oklahoma is 52-6 overall, and 22-5 in the Big 12 conference. Softball fans will notice that the Sooners have lost more games than usual but are still the same dominant force they always have been. Their first loss came to Louisiana in extra innings, and since then they have dropped series to Texas and Oklahoma State, with another loss to BYU. In their Norman Regional, they took wins against Cleveland State and Oregon.

Kelly Maxwell, after transferring from Oklahoma State, has been the workhorse for the Sooners. With a team leading 121.1 innings, Maxwell has a 1.90 ERA and a 19-2 record. During this time, she has 72 H, 33 R, 42 BB, 127 SO and a .170 B/AVG. Nicole May has been a staple in the OU pitching staff for 5 years, and is now one of the top arms. In 75.2 IP, May has the highest ERA, with a 2.41. She also has 64 H, 29 R, 22 BB, 84 SO and a .224 B/AVG.

Kierston Deal: 1.62 ERA / 12-1 W-L / 69 IP / 40 H / 17 R / 17 BB / 64 SO / .162 B/AVG.

Despite not being a top bat in terms of batting average, Tiare Jennings is the team leader in homeruns. With 21 long balls, Jennings also has a .374 BA, 49 R, 64 H, 14 2B, 61 RBI, 31 BB. Kinzie Hansen leads in batting average, with .420, as well as 29 R, 55 H, 8 HR, 33 RBI, and 15 BB.

The ‘Noles and Sooners saw each other in the Championship Series of the Women’s College World Series, last season. OU swept FSU in two games, with a 3-1 win in the final game. Kathryn Sandercock pitched all 7 innings, giving up 8 H, 3 R with 3 SO. Alex Storako and Jordy Bahl combined for the Sooners 3rd straight national championship. Mack Leonard provided the lone RBI, on a homerun in the 4th inning, giving FSU the lead at the time.
