UNC: ‘Embarrassing’ bowl loss a turning point
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Few soccer groups had been extra disappointing in 2021 than North Carolina, which opened the 12 months ranked No. 10 within the nation, and the Tar Heels completed 6-7 after a depressing bowl loss to South Carolina. However that loss, star receiver Josh Downs mentioned, was a turning level for a staff that is hoping to make up for final 12 months’s errors in 2022.
“That was embarrassing,” Downs mentioned of UNC’s 38-21 loss within the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. “That acquired a hearth in me. In that locker room after the sport, we had a variety of dudes arise and say we’re not doing this subsequent 12 months. We’re getting this collectively proper now reasonably than ready a number of weeks. We’re doing this now.”
After a robust 2020 season that culminated with a visit to the Orange Bowl, UNC was one in every of final offseason’s stylish picks as a possible playoff contender. The wheels got here off rapidly with an opening-week loss to Virginia Tech.
Issues acquired worse from there.
UNC was a 14-point favourite towards Georgia Tech however was crushed 45-22. The Heels misplaced 35-25 to Florida State regardless of being an 18-point favourite, then ended their common season by blowing a 10-point lead with two minutes to play towards rival NC State. The loss to South Carolina — as a 12-point favourite — was the ultimate straw.
“Individuals had been indignant,” linebacker Cedric Grey mentioned. “You possibly can see it on our faces within the locker room after the sport. It was a really sick feeling.”
Downs mentioned quite a few gamers — together with himself and tailback British Brooks — made speeches within the locker room admonishing teammates for an absence of effort within the loss to South Carolina.
Within the weeks main as much as the bowl sport, Downs mentioned some gamers made feedback that they weren’t fascinated by even taking part in, and that mentality filtered onto the sector.
“We had some guys who speaking loopy like, ‘I do not even need to play,’ and it confirmed on the market,” mentioned Downs, who completed with 101 catches and 1,335 yards final season. “We acquired smacked. And I did not need to be part of one thing like that, and we needed to repair it.
“I am like, ‘For those who do not need to be right here, simply depart. You are taking up house. You could be the perfect, however there’s anyone else who needs to be right here.’ I used to be simply fed up at that time.”
So, too, was coach Mack Brown, who mentioned he spent a lot of final season anxious that his staff anticipated to win on status reasonably than effort, recalling instances he yelled at gamers for not hustling in apply, solely to be ignored.
“I wished to inform all of them to go to hell,” Brown mentioned about his mindset after the bowl loss. “And I do not do effectively once I’m mad, so I stored my mouth shut.”
The subsequent morning, Brown mentioned, he fired defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and, inside 5 minutes, referred to as Gene Chizik and provided him the then-vacant job.
“We needed to change some issues,” Brown mentioned. “It wasn’t honest to our staff to lose [games] like that.”
The roots of the problems, Brown mentioned, had been the offseason hype.
“The expectations had been greater than we had been good, however we should always’ve performed higher and we should always’ve coached higher. That goes again to me,” mentioned Brown, who received the 2005 nationwide championship at Texas. “It would not have been at Texas as a result of we had been used to it. Our guys weren’t used to it.”
He has made some extent of tempering expectations for 2022, and that mixed with Chizik’s defensive depth and the elevated accountability from leaders resembling Downs, Brooks and Grey has the Heels feeling like there is a real alternative to make up for final season’s failures.
Downs mentioned the staff established a management council that meets a number of instances every week, they usually’ve targeted on constructing higher staff chemistry and energy.
“Simply holding guys accountable, being robust and giving ardour to the staff are our three major attributes we need to reside by each single day,” Downs mentioned. “Compete along with your brothers but in addition love in your brothers. Lots of people have been working, and there is a variety of competitors.”

Snow drought ends: Parts of central NC gets first measurable snowfall in 2 years | Live
The North Carolina Department of Transportation gave an update Friday afternoon on its preparations and strategies for managing roadways before, during and after the winter storm.
Doug McNeal, division maintenance engineer for NCDOT’s Division 5, said NCDOT has been preparing for this during the past three days.
Division 5 covers Durham and Wake counties as well as surrounding counties up to the Virginia line.
“We’ve had about 65 salt-brine applicators out in the division. We’ve put out roughly 465,000 gallons in our division,” McNeal said.
Statewide, more than 3 million gallons have been put down.
“We’re expecting impacts across pretty much all of North Carolina. Right now, we’re transitioning to our response time,” McNeal said. “We’re starting to see a little bit of snow in the air … but it’s certainly going to get treacherous out there.”
He said 110 DOT trucks and motor graders are ready to go and an additional 150 contract trucks are loaded and staged.
“As it starts to roll in, we generally wait until you can see tracks in the road before we start taking in, applying salt,” McNeal said. “If you apply before then, it just bounces off the roads, so you need a little bit of material there to capture it but once we give it a little bit of time to activate, and we’re plowing from there.”
He said another concern with this storm is the potential for freezing rain.
“We’re seeing forecasts potentially up to a quarter-inch of ice in the area,” McNeal said.
They’ve also staged what McNeal called cut-and-shove crews.
“We’ll take and try to cut it back to the edge of the pavement and then push off everything else so that the lanes are open and then we come back after things warm up in a couple of days and clear it up from there,” he explained.
McNeal said Saturday would be a good day for people to sleep in and “enjoy that cup of coffee before you go out.”

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein declares state of emergency ahead of winter storm
(WGHP) — Governor Josh Stein declared a statewide state of emergency on Thursday evening ahead of a winter storm expected to sweep through the Piedmont Triad on Friday.
He is urging people across North Carolina to prepare for cold temperatures, snow and ice.
“This storm will likely bring significant impacts from snow, sleet and freezing rain in different parts of the state,” Stein said. “North Carolinians should pay close attention to their local weather forecast, make sure they are prepared with what they need at home before Friday afternoon and stay home if possible as ice on the roadways will likely create dangerous driving conditions.”
On Wednesday, Stein activated state resources to set into motion a cross-agency storm response and enable the potential of federal reimbursement if the event qualifies.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has begun brining roads. They will work around the clock in 12-hour shifts to plow and treat snow and ice until all state-maintained roads are cleared.
“State emergency officials are monitoring the situation and are prepared to assist the counties and municipalities if needed,” NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray said. “Residents across the state should be prepared to shelter in place. If the power goes out, be sure to operate generators outside and away from open windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.”
