Where Miami Ranks in Polls After Final Bye Week of the Season

In a week where the Miami Hurricanes take their final bye week of the season, the college football world and the ACC saw many changes in the guard. Penn State lost to Northwestern, and now James Franklin has been fired, with a nearly $50 million buyout.
Florida State has unranked again after dropping its third consecutive game in the ACC this season, while Indiana defeated Oregon on the road to solidify itself as a potential player in the national championship hunt.
For the Canes, they remain in the same spot as last week in the AP Polls, but are climbing to the No. 2 spot in the USA Today Coaches polls.
Miami will have a “short week” as they face off against the Louisville Cardinals on Oct. 17 in a Friday night game at Hard Rock Stadium

No. 4 Panthers Drop Top 20 Match to No. 18 Miami Friday Night – Pitt Panthers #H2P
Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (12-3, 4-1 ACC) dropped a tightly contested five-set match (26-24, 25-14, 22-25, 19-25, 13-15) to No. 18 Miami (15-1, 5-0 ACC) on Friday night in Coral Gables despite a season-high 30 kills from Olivia Babcock. This marks Pitt’s first conference loss since Oct. 12, 2024, against SMU.
Pitt and Miami traded points back and forth in set one until a 4-0 run behind the serve of Babcock forced Miami to call a timeout, down 10-6. Babcock scored the next point on ace to extend the lead, but the Hurricanes narrowed the gap to 13-12, causing Pitt to take a timeout. Miami picked up some momentum, propelling the Hurricanes to a 19-17 lead, and the Panthers called their final timeout. Both teams remained tied multiple times throughout the remainder of the set, but Pitt’s Babcock and Ryla Jones delivered back-to-back blocks at 24-24 to secure the set one victory, 26-24.
The Panthers continued to roll in set two as Miami had no choice but to call an early timeout, down 7-3. Miami gave its best effort to narrow the gap but was unable to as the Hurricanes called their last timeout down 20-11. A pair of Miami errors and three combined kills from Babcock, Bre Kelley and Blaire Bayless gave Pitt the decisive second set, 25-14.
Miami used a 7-1 run early in set three to force the Panthers to take a timeout, trailing 9-6. The Hurricanes held narrow leads in the following stretch, but Pitt didn’t go away and tied things up at 20-20 at the Miami timeout. Outside hitter Flormarie Heredia Colon scored four of the following five points for Miami to extend the match with a 25-22 set three win.
Set four was tied 4-4 until another 7-1 run from the Hurricanes led Pitt to talk things over. The Panthers continued to battle back, but Miami never relinquished the lead and claimed set four, 25-19.
The Hurricanes carried over the momentum from set four into the fifth as the Panthers took a timeout, down 6-3. Babcock and Bayless powered Pitt back into the match and helped tie the score at 11-11, but a 4-2 run in favor of Miami led to the five-set defeat for the Panthers.
NOTES
• Olivia Babcock recorded a season-high 30 kills, marking her third 30+ kill match of her career
• Brooke Mosher registered a match-high 48 assists, her fourth 45+ assist match in five outings
• Bre Kelley added a match-best seven blocks

King tides, heavy rain flood South Florida streets, strand drivers

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Communities across South Florida saw roadways blanketed with water Friday afternoon as heavy rain combined with seasonal King tides.
Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and areas in and around Hollywood were among the hardest hit.
Tides add to flooding woes
Friday’s showers, coupled with King tides, added inches of water to already saturated streets. In Hollywood, some residents reported water reaching halfway up their driveways.
“I know my grass is going to be high,” said longtime resident Steffi Wallace-Keffer. “And I worry, are my garbage cans going to be floating down the alley?”
Drivers stall in Hallandale Beach
Chopper 4 spotted several cars struggling to navigate flooded roads in Hallandale Beach. Resident Scott Sorensen said a stalled car sat on his front lawn for three hours Friday afternoon.
“They go too fast and they break down, like right here on the sidewalk,” he said.
Residents stay despite challenges
Despite the frustrations of summer flooding, Wallace-Keffer said she has no plans to leave the area.
King tides past seasonal peak
CBS News Miami’s Next Weather meteorologists said South Florida is now past the peak of King tides for this time of year.

Videos show Billie Eilish aggressively pulled by fan in barricade during Miami concert

A frightening scene at Billie Eilish’s Miami concert has gone viral after several social media videos showed the singer being aggressively yanked by her arm into a crowded barricade during her performance Thursday night.
The 23-year-old Grammy winner was in South Florida to kick off her “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” tour, where she had three nights lined up at the Kaseya Center in Downtown Miami.
In the videos, the 23-year-old Grammy winner is seen walking by fans lined up at the front-row barricade and touching her hands until one person abruptly grabs her arm with enough force, slamming her into the dividers.
Security personnel immediately intervened and helped Eilish back up onto her feet and pushed the rogue audience member back. Other angles caught the singer looking quite upset and startled at the sudden and intense interaction.
In a statement provided to CBS News Miami, the City of Miami Police said the individual was ejected from the venue but provided no further information related to the incident. It remains unclear whether this person was arrested or will face any charges.
In several posts across social media, many people called for improved safety measures for artists at live events.
CBS News Miami has reached out to the Kaseya Center for further comment. Neither Eilish nor her representatives have released statements regarding the incident.
Previous inappropriate fan behavior incidents
Thursday night’s incident is not the first time Eilish has dealt with inappropriate behavior from her fans and other concertgoers.
In 2019, one person tried to put their hand around the singer’s neck while she was doing crowd work at Austin City Limits. Eilish said in an interview with Vanity Fair that she believed the fan “didn’t mean to” do it during the interaction and that they were “only trying to be loving, and sometimes it just comes off wrong.”
In a number of other incidents, Eilish has spoken out about people throwing things at her during shows while she’s on stage. Billboard reported last December that she was hit in the face with a necklace during a concert in Arizona and mentioned that attendees will often throw their phones at her, too.
In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Eilish and her musician brother Finneas have shared their thoughts about the trend but she said it’s “nothing new.”
“I’ve been getting hit on stage with things for, like, literally six years,” Eilish said. “People just get excited and it can be dangerous.”
“It’s absolutely infuriating when you’re up there,” she continued. I have mixed feelings about it, because when you’re up there, it blows. But you know it’s out of love, and they’re just trying to give you something. You’re in a vulnerable position.”
