NBA Finals Game 1: Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets odds, picks and predictions

The Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets meet for Game 1 of their best-of-7 NBA Finals series Thursday at Ball Arena. Tip is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET (ABC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Heat vs. Nuggets odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions

The Heat averted a disaster of historic proportions on Monday, routing the Boston Celtics 103-84 in Game 7 at TD Garden as 7.5-point underdogs. Miami had a comfortable 3-0 series lead, but blew chances in closeout games at home in both Games 4 and 6 to fall into an untenable position. However, like the 150 series before it, no team has ever blown a 3-0 series lead.

The Nuggets didn’t have to work nearly as hard in the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Denver won 113-111 in Game 4 back on May 22 at Crypto.com Arena in Southern California to complete the series sweep. Denver has won 6 in a row overall, going 4-2 against the spread (ATS) in that run.

Denver won in 4 against the Lakers, in 6 against the Phoenix Suns and in 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, going 9-6 ATS in these playoffs. The Under is 4-2 in the last 6 outings. At home, the Nuggets are 8-0 straight up (SU) and 5-3 ATS in the postseason, while splitting the Over-Under 4-4.

Miami started out in the play-in tournament, splitting a pair of games at home while also going 1-1 ATS. They stunned the No. 1 seed Milwaukee Bucks in 5 games, topped the New York Knicks in 6 games, and then the C’s in 7. On the road, the Heat are 6-4 SU and 7-3 ATS, with the Over going 7-3.

Denver won 112-108 in Miami on Feb. 3 as a 1-point favorite as the Over (217.5) cashed, while the Nuggets won 124-119 as a 4-point favorite on Dec. 30 in the Mile High City, also cashing the Over (224.5).

The good news is that both teams are healthy at this time of the series, listing no meaningful players on the injury report.

Heat at Nuggets picks and predictions

Prediction

Nuggets 115, Heat 106

Moneyline

The Nuggets (-375) will cost you over 3 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s just way too much for any kind of standalone wager. Plus, there is concern with rust, as Denver has been off for 9 days since sweeping the Lakers, while the Heat (+290) played the full 7 games to dispatch the Celtics.

PASS.

Against the spread

NUGGETS -8.5 (-115) is the lean, but go really, really lightly, and expect them to get off to a slower start early on.

Denver has had a full 9 days off, which is a curse, and a blessing. At this time of the season, any R&R is good news to heal the bumps and bruises of the grueling NBA regular season and postseason. However, there could also be some continuity problems early on, as it’s difficult to just flip a switch and get back to competitive mode.

The Heat +8.5 (-105) will not have a problem, because there is no switch. They just played Monday night in Boston, in front of a hostile crowd, so the competitive juices are still flowing and fresh.

I like the HEAT +5.5 (-110) – 1ST HALF LINE, as I think Miami is able to hang around, and perhaps even lead most of the 1st half. However, C Nikola Jokic has been on a mission, and not sure anyone on Miami can slow him down in the 2nd half once he gets cranked back up.

Over/Under

OVER 219.5 (-110) is the lean, but I’d go lightly on all counts, as these teams feel each other out.

Not only was Denver 2-0 SU/ATS in the regular season series against Miami, but the Over cashed in each outing, too. The Over has connected in 4 straight meetings in the Mile High City, while hitting in 5 straight meetings in the series, too.

While the Under hit in the last 4 games for Miami, the Over is 4-0 in its last 4 when working on 2 or more days of rest. The Over is also 10-3 in the last 13 games on the road. The Over is 10-1 in the last 11 for the Nuggets when facing winning teams, and 6-1 in the last 7 when playing on 3 or more days of rest.

Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami unveils five-match, four-country preseason trip

Lionel Messi is getting another preseason tour with Inter Miami, this one a five-match trip that will see the reigning MLS Supporters’ Shield winners playing in four different countries as it tunes up for the 2025 season.

Announced Friday were three matches in South America and Central America. Inter Miami opens that swing with a game against Peruvian champion Club Universitario de Deportes in Lima on Jan. 29.

From there, the club goes to Panama City to take on Sporting San Miguelito on Feb. 2, followed by a trip to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, for a Feb. 8 match against Club Deportivo Olimpia.

The first and last preseason matches were already known: Inter Miami will play Mexican power Club America in Las Vegas on Jan. 18 and close the exhibition slate in Tampa, Florida, against MLS rival Orlando City on Feb. 14.

“We’re very excited to unveil the five matches against domestic and international opponents across the Americas that will prepare us for a highly anticipated 2025,” Inter Miami president of football operations Raul Sanllehi said. “These fixtures will put us in the best possible position ahead of an unparalleled campaign with various competitions we’re playing for this year — the FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and MLS.”

With 34 regular season MLS matches, five preseason games and the three cup tournaments, Inter Miami could easily exceed 50 matches this season — and probably will play even more than that. And that doesn’t even count international matches for Messi and likely several other Inter Miami players.

This year’s preseason tour isn’t quite as ambitious as the one Inter Miami planned last year, with matches in Dallas, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and Japan on that schedule. Much of that trip didn’t go as envisioned: A Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo matchup in Saudi Arabia didn’t happen because Ronaldo was sidelined by injury, and fans in Asia were angered by Messi missing one match there and playing sparingly in another. Some refunds were even issued to help appease disappointed ticket-holders, some of whom spent more than $600 with hopes of seeing Messi play.

Inter Miami’s training camp starts with physicals on Saturday. The first practice under new coach Javier Mascherano is Monday.

TRANSFER PORTAL: Charlotte Gets Commitment From Ex-Louisville, Miami RB Don Chaney Jr.

Former Miami and Louisville running back Don Chaney Jr. will transfer to Charlotte, as first reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.

A former four-star recruit, Chaney began his career with Miami in 2020 and rushed for 322 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 68 carries, but suffered season-ending injuries in 2021 and 2022.

The 5-foot-10, 208-pounder bounced back to finish third on Miami’s roster in rushing yards in 2023, rushing for 478 yards and two touchdowns before transferring to Louisville following the season.

Chaney never found his footing with Jeff Brohm’s club, being used primarily as a reserve this past year. He rushed for 178 yards on 50 carries with three touchdowns and hauled in seven receptions for 62 yards.

For his career, the Miami native has rushed for 1,030 yards and nine touchdowns.

First-year Charlotte head coach Tim Albin takes over the 49ers’ program after former head coach Biff Poggi was relieved of his duties following a two-year stint in the Queen City that saw Poggi amass a 6-16 record with the team.

Stephen A. Smith Once Referred To Ex-Miami Heat Player As ‘Steal Of The Draft’

Let’s be honest: no one is perfect when it comes to making predictions.

You win some, and you lose some.

So cut media personality Stephen A. Smith some slack for his now cold take during the 2015 NBA draft. While ripping the New York Knicks for drafting Kristaps Porzingis with the fourth pick, Smith rattled off three players they should have taken instead.

They were Willie Cauley-Stein, Stanley Johnson and Justise Winslow, who he all called “NBA ready.”

Smith boldly called Winslow “the steal of the draft.” He was taken by the Heat at No. 10. Fans fell for it, too, because they cheered loudly at Kaseya Center when the pick was announced. The result was Winslow having five forgetful seasons in Miami before he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Heat fans forever link him with All-Star Devin Booker, who was taken three spots after at No. 13. Others drafted later were Kelly Oubre Jr., and Terry Rozier.

Smith was actually wrong about all the players he mentioned who should have been taken ahead of Porzingis. Cauley-Stein was out of the league after seven seasons, averaging 8.7 points and 5.9 rebounds for his career. Johnson made it eight seasons before exiting to play overseas.

Meanwhile, Porzingis is still going strong as a key cog for the defending champion Boston Celtics. And Heat fans are still sulking about Winslow never panning out.
