Lionel Messi to join MLS side Inter Miami after leaving PSG

The Argentinian great Lionel Messi has said he will sign for Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami after leaving French champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), snubbing a lucrative offer in Saudi Arabia.

“I made the decision that I’m going to go to Miami. I still haven’t closed it 100 percent,” Messi told  Mundo Deportivo and Sport newspapers. “I’m still missing a few things, but we decided to go ahead.”

Inter Miami also teased the player’s arrival in a social media video featuring various rumours about the superstar’s next destination. The clip ends with Messi’s name stylised in the club’s colours.

The MLS welcomed Messi’s looming move to the league.

“We are pleased that Lionel Messi has stated that he intends to join Inter Miami and Major League Soccer this summer. Although work remains to finalize a formal agreement, we look forward to welcoming one of the greatest players of all time to our league,” the MLS said in a statement.

A World Cup winner and serial champion considered by many as the greatest ever to play the game, Messi, 35, is one of the best known athletes in the world.

He will arrive to a league that does not enjoy the same level of popularity or intensity as European football, but one that has been home to many stars in recent years, including David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lorenzo Insigne.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez hailed Messi’s likely move, calling it “enormous” on Wednesday.

“We literally beat his longtime home team and an incredible financial package from one of the wealthiest countries because Miami is the most exciting and dynamic city in the world,” he wrote on Twitter.

The move to the United States will shock many in the game because Messi was widely predicted to join the increasingly ambitious Saudi Premier League to play alongside stars such Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Inter Miami, which is co-owned by Beckham and now has an Argentinian interim coach in Javier Morales, have been struggling this season. They currently sit bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Signing the seven-time world player of the year will be a major boost for the club and US football more broadly. Should the deal with Miami go through, it would be the first time Messi has played league football outside Europe.

Barcelona said in a statement on Wednesday that it presented Messi with a proposal to re-join the team. But it added that club president Joan Laporta “understood and respected Messi’s decision to want to compete in a league with fewer demands, further away from the spotlight and the pressure he has been subject to in recent years”.

Earlier on Wednesday, Spanish football writer and Messi biographer Guillem Balague wrote in a BBC report that the 2022 World Cup winner would reject an offer from Saudi side Al Hilal and is unable to rejoin his former club Barcelona due to financial fair-play limitations.

“But Messi was ultimately tempted to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami for a variety of reasons, including lifestyle and a deal with big brands that extends beyond football,” Balague wrote, adding that Messi already owns a house in Miami, which he currently rents out.

Balague says the Miami deal includes collaboration from brands including Adidas and Apple.

In two seasons at PSG, Messi won two French leagues and the French Champions Trophy. He scored 32 goals and made 35 assists in all competitions.

Messi scored in a 1-1 draw at Strasbourg a week ago to help PSG clinch a record-extending 11th French league title. By grabbing a 496th career league goal, the Argentinian also broke Ronaldo’s scoring record for Europe’s top five leagues.

His two-year contract with PSG ended in early June and was not renewed as relations soured between Messi and the club.

PSG fans have jeered Messi in the past couple of months as his form dipped after he helped Argentina win the World Cup.

Relations further deteriorated in May when PSG suspended Messi after he made an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia. Messi has a commercial contract with Saudi Arabia to promote tourism.

He had made an emotional farewell to Barcelona in 2021 after the club’s dire finances meant they could no longer afford to keep him.

Messi won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and seven Spanish Cups during his 21 years at Barcelona and is the Catalan club’s record scorer with 672 goals.

Residents on edge after overnight shootout in Miami Gardens neighborhood – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – Residents of a Miami Gardens neighborhood are on edge after a shootout in the middle of the night had them ducking for cover.

Dozens of bullets fired from automatic weapons were heard late Tuesday night along Northwest 196th Street.

One resident’s surveillance camera captured footage of the gunfire.

“Around midnight, ‘bam,’ I start seeing a whole lot of, you know, really loud automatic weapons firing,” said witness Louis Rivera.

The gunfire appeared to be targeting the car that was driving by.

Inside his home, Rivera told his family to hide.

“I run to the hallway and tell my wife, ‘hit the floor,’ because they are outside shooting at each other,” he said.

Rivera’s 6-year-old daughter took cover with her mother.

“I was scared, I was shaking, I was nervous,” said Rivera’s daughter.

The drover who appeared to be targeted crashed into Rivera’s fence, driving it into the ground before exiting the vehicle.

“One of them tried to jump that fence over there, but I guess he got scared of my big dog that I got back there,” said Rivera.

Another neighbor’s home and truck were also hit by bullets. The resident was unable to start the brand-new truck vehicle, Thursday morning.

As of Thursday afternoon, there was no word from Miami Gardens Police, as neighbors deal with the aftermath of a violent attack in the middle of the street.

“It looked like it was happening everywhere,” said Rivera. “Doesn’t matter if you live in Miami Gardens, you live in Opa-locka, you live in Kendall. I mean, it is happening everywhere. There’s no respect for anything anymore.”

MIAMI – If you’ve been thinking about getting a new furry friend to have around the house, this might be your weekend.

Miami-Dade Animal Services will host a Love’s Full Bloom adoption event at its shelter in Medley.

Several years ago, Animal Services opened a new air-conditioned main facility in Doral. The open-air Medley shelter, which does not have air conditioning, was only supposed to be used for overflow.

Due to the county’s pet population growth, it is needed. More than 100 dogs are now housed there and with this week’s heat, they’ve had to make extra accommodations.

Ice in water is available and walking restrictions have been put in place, dogs are only walked for ten minutes in the morning and when the sun goes down at night. They are also being monitored for heavy breathing and lethargy. Pools are being used to keep the dogs cool.

For this Saturday’s adoption event at the shelter, at 7401 NW 74TH Street, adoption fees will be waived for pets four months and older.

“The event will showcase a diverse selection of dogs seeking loving fur-ever families. Attendees will have the chance to meet and interact with the dogs, fostering connections that could lead to lifelong companionship,” according to Animal Services.

The adoption event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Vendors will be there, including a groomer offering free grooming services to the first 10 adoptions.

Miami Heat’s Star-Hunting Tendencies Drawing Them To Donovan Mitchell?

Miami Heat’s Star-Hunting Tendencies Drawing Them To Donovan Mitchell?

The Miami Heat may do everything in their power to acquire Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell after missing out on Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal in recent years.

Mitchell and the Cavs were eliminated from the postseason on Wednesday, marking a second straight early playoff exit. Most believe Mitchell, 27, is the sole reason Cleveland made it past the first round. The lack of support when it matters most could lead to him refusing to extend his contract past the 2026 season.

“I think if Donovan chose not to extend, he would be able to kind of direct the trade a little bit because of the one year on his contract,” analyst Brian Windhorst said on an episode of ESPN’s Get Up. “The Miami Heat have been star hunting for a year now. They’re always star hunting. They have some players on their roster who would potentially be interesting to Cleveland, but not as deep in draft picks as others.”

Mitchell’s player option for the 2026 season is likely insignificant because he will either switch teams or extend his contract prior. The Heat should think twice before going all-in for the five-time All-Star due to the lack of success of front-loaded rosters. The Phoenix Suns Big Three had championship expectations this season but were swept in the first round, leaving their future in jeopardy.

There’s no doubt Mitchell is one of the league’s top shooting guards, averaging 26.6 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.1 rebounds on 46.2 percent shooting in 55 games last season. Tyler Herro, a young player (Jaime Jaquez Jr. or Nikola Jovic), and draft capital are a sufficient package, but holding onto depth is arguably more important for a team that has reached the NBA Finals twice since 2020.
