Residents on edge after overnight shootout in Miami Gardens neighborhood – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – Residents of a Miami Gardens neighborhood are on edge after a shootout in the middle of the night had them ducking for cover.

Dozens of bullets fired from automatic weapons were heard late Tuesday night along Northwest 196th Street.

One resident’s surveillance camera captured footage of the gunfire.

“Around midnight, ‘bam,’ I start seeing a whole lot of, you know, really loud automatic weapons firing,” said witness Louis Rivera.

The gunfire appeared to be targeting the car that was driving by.

Inside his home, Rivera told his family to hide.

“I run to the hallway and tell my wife, ‘hit the floor,’ because they are outside shooting at each other,” he said.

Rivera’s 6-year-old daughter took cover with her mother.

“I was scared, I was shaking, I was nervous,” said Rivera’s daughter.

The drover who appeared to be targeted crashed into Rivera’s fence, driving it into the ground before exiting the vehicle.

“One of them tried to jump that fence over there, but I guess he got scared of my big dog that I got back there,” said Rivera.

Another neighbor’s home and truck were also hit by bullets. The resident was unable to start the brand-new truck vehicle, Thursday morning.

As of Thursday afternoon, there was no word from Miami Gardens Police, as neighbors deal with the aftermath of a violent attack in the middle of the street.

“It looked like it was happening everywhere,” said Rivera. “Doesn’t matter if you live in Miami Gardens, you live in Opa-locka, you live in Kendall. I mean, it is happening everywhere. There’s no respect for anything anymore.”

Crews put out house fires in Miami, North Miami – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

NORTH MIAMI, FLA. (WSVN) – The skies opened up across South Florida on Wednesday, but the heavy rainfall did not prevent fires from breaking at homes in North Miami and Miami.

Ten Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the first house fire near Northwest 130th Street and 10th Avenue in North Miami, just before 9:25 a.m.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the south side of the structure.

Firefighters quickly hosed down the flames extinguish the fire. Crews noticed gas cylinders that had ignited due to the fire, so they pulled a second hose line to cool the tanks.

The local utility company was called out to secure a downed power line and the utilities to the home.

At around 3:35 p.m., City of Miami Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene of the second house fire in the area of Southwest 64th Court and Fifth Avenue.

Crews arrived at the scene of the blaze to fond the one-story home with smoke billowing from the rear.

A 7News viewer sent in cellphone video of the smoke and flames.

Firefighters extended hose lines into the rear of the property and found an exterior fire. They also rescued a dog from an efficiency in the rear. All other residents evacuated before crews arrived.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross are assisting five adults and three children who were displaced as a result of the fire.

The Miami Fire Investigation Unit was also requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

No injuries were reported in either fire.

Arkansas men’s basketball to play at Miami in 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge

The Arkansas men’s basketball program will face the Miami Hurricanes in the second annual SEC/ACC Challenge, ESPN announced today. The game will be played on Dec. 3 (Tuesday) at Miami’s Watsco Center in Coral Gables. Network designations and tip-off times will be announced at a later date.

The Razorbacks and Hurricanes have only met on one previous occasion when the two programs were paired in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament in Nashville. #23 Miami, the sixth seed, defeated 11th-seeded Arkansas, 75-71.

Ironically, Razorback head coach John Calipari will be facing the Hurricanes for the second time in as many seasons for the SEC/ACC Challenge. Last season, Calipari’s 12th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats beat #8 Miami, 95-73, in Rupp Arena.

Arkansas defeated #7 Duke, 80-75, on ESPN before a Bud Walton Arena record crowd of 20,334 as part of last year’s Challenge. Trevon Brazile had 19 points and 11 rebounds with two blocked shots in the Razorback victory and was later named the SEC Player of the Week for his effort.

Police: Woman recognizes brother as serial thief in Miami-Dade County

MIAMI – A woman told police officers she wouldn’t be surprised if her troubled brother was the thief they were searching for in Miami-Dade County. According to a police report, evidence would later show she was right.

Her brother Daniel Huertas was at the Metrowest Detention Center on Wednesday near Doral facing nine charges in two pending cases — including one that was related to domestic violence.

Huertas, 38, also had a pending warrant case for a probation violation.

According to an arrest report, detectives found surveillance video showing Huertas on May 22 at a Chevron gas station with a stolen credit card and a stolen red Nissan Rogue sports utility vehicle.

Detectives believe Huertas broke into a residential property, and into two cars to steal a wallet with credit cards and a driver’s license, stole an electric bicycle nearby, and kidnapped his sister and stole her car.

Corrections booked Huertas on May 23 at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The charges have been piling up since.

For the domestic violence case, Huertas is facing charges of carjacking, strongarm robbery, kidnapping, battery on a person 65 years old or older, and battery.

In a second case, Huertas faced charges of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, two counts of burglary of an occupied, and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
