Popular Netflix show highlights Louisiana School for the Deaf, its impact on community
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The Louisiana School for the Deaf and Visually Impaired is an inclusive school where every child has access to sports, language and people they can relate to.
“Here, there are role models where the students can look up and learn from those role models who are going through the same, or have gone through the same thing that they are experiencing,” said Denton Mallas, the Dean of Students and Athletic Director of the Louisiana School for Deaf.
Mallas recently appeared on the popular Netflix series ‘Queer Eye,’ in which he got the chance to display what the school for the deaf represents.
Because of the show, students at the Louisiana school now have a new locker room, concession stand and other means to “protect the nest” — a term Mallas coined himself.
“Now, we’re feeling like we’re not alone. We feel like we have friends. We have people elsewhere who know and support this school and its mission,” Mallas explained.
They are dedicated to letting people know what this school means to the deaf community.

Located in East Baton Rouge Parish, this suburb has a population of 2,559 and offers residents an urban suburban mix feel.
