Before Rashee Rice was back with his Kansas City Chiefs teammates for the upcoming season, he had to serve 30 days in jail following a probation violation stemming from a multi-vehicle crash back in 2024.

Rice called the discipline a “reality check.”

“It was a learning experience and a reality check,” Rice said, via ESPN. “Don’t focus on the past. Focus on what’s going on now. I’m doing [well] mentally.”

Rice was on probation for his involvement in the 2024 multi-vehicle crash, where he eventually pleaded guilty to two felony charges.

The NFL also docked Rice six games for violating their personal conduct policy, which he served this past season.

Rice violated his probation after testing positive for THC, which mandated a 30-day jail sentence in Texas. He began serving that sentence on May 19, and he was released from jail in mid-June.

He also received surgery to take care of loose bodies in his right knee, which caused him inflammation during his eight games for the Chiefs in 2025.

He declined to speak with reporters who were waiting for him outside the detention center, but now at training camp, Rice faced the music.

“It was mentally tough. They gave me ways to communicate with my teammates still as well as my athletic trainer,” Rice explained. “Besides the hard times in there, I kept my mind right watching shows and as much Kevin Hart as I could to laugh.”

Rice added that he was allowed to get treatment done on his knee while serving his time as well.

“I would stretch it, do some activation on it and then hit the weight room and jog, just condition and get the muscle fatigue going as well as my stamina.”

Rice is only entering Year 4 in the NFL, but off-the-field issues have taken away from the solid chemistry he has with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has trusted him with top wide receiver duties. His production has warranted that as well.

“I’m 100% locked in on what’s going on now with the team,” Rice explained. “I’m ready to go out there and dominate. I’ve got a good group of brothers behind me.”

Rice tallied 571 yards on 53 receptions with five touchdowns in his eight games with the Chiefs in 2025. He had a breakout rookie campaign with 938 yards on 79 catches with seven scores in 2023, but he was unable to play a full year in 2024 after suffering a season-ending knee injury.

It seemed no lead was safe during the Sparks’ matchup against the Mercury on Tuesday night before Phoenix rallied for a 94-87 win at the Galen Center, snapping its three-game losing streak.

The Sparks have lost nine of their past 11 games, but both teams are still fighting for a playoff spot with fewer than a dozen games remaining. Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said pregame that the players know what is at stake during the final stretch of the season.

The Sparks (12-20) sit in 10th place, one spot ahead of the Mercury (13-22) and outside of the eight-team playoff cut line, with 12 games remaining.

Kelsey Plum, who was recently traded from the Sparks to the Mercury, did not play during the first matchup against her former team because of a lower left leg injury.

“There are no gimme games in this league for anybody, whether you are in first or last — every game is hard,” Roberts said.

Dearica Hamby and Rae Burrell led the Sparks with 19 each and Nneka Ogwumike added 18 points and nine rebounds. Cameron Brink finished with seven points and five rebounds off the bench.

After a slow start during a loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday, the Sparks splashed 23 points in the first quarter.

The Sparks claimed a 47-44 halftime lead after a steal by Burrell, which she followed with a crafty reverse layup in the final seconds.

The teams traded the lead throughout the third quarter.

The Sparks pulled ahead in the fourth, but Phoenix tied it 81-81 with 3:33 remaining after a bucket from the Mercury’s top scorer Noémie Brochant.

Brochant led the team with 24 points and five steals, making it difficult for the Sparks to rally.

Ariel Atkins cut the deficit to 90-87 after banking in a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining, but the Mercury made their free throws and pressured the Sparks’ offense.

The Sparks had difficulty solving problems caused by the Mercury’s zone defense. And dominating the paint for stretches of the game, Hamby had four turnovers, including two in the fourth.

“It was kind of those one-on-one on the inside before they went zone,” Hamby said. “I feel like the second half was every time I went to my move, they were right there and on time with the turnovers.”

Roberts said that she expects to see the same zone defense on Thursday when the Sparks travel to New York to face the Liberty (20-14).

“The ball did not move. We were trying to throw dimes when you need to make the easy play,” Roberts said. “But that’s what zone does, you know? If we had shot better, they probably would have gotten out of it.”

Jacy Maranhao, the Brazilian soccer player whose goal celebration led to a horrific scene as he fell through a hole at the stadium, gave a health update on Tuesday.

Maranhao admitted he got “carried away” after scoring for his Coritiba club in Brazil at Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira. He said he was trying to find his wife in the crowd, which led to him jumping over the barrier on the pitch.

But a trap door was open on the other side of the barrier, which Maranhao never saw. He fell down the hole, injuring his ankle in the process.

“I scored the goal and wanted to celebrate with my wife because she’s pregnant,” the 29-year-old defender and captain of Coritiba, which plays in Brazil’s top league, said, per Brazilian outlet Globo.

“But then I remembered it was my first goal at Couto Pereira stadium, and I also wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I hadn’t remembered there was a moat there.”

Maranhao said it felt like a dream when “you’re falling from a building.”

And to make matters worse, VAR review negated Maranhao’s goal, as he was ruled offsides. But Coritiba managed to win 2-1 in the end.

To everyone’s relief, though, Maranhao was able to continue playing the rest of the half despite his injury. He ended up subbing out before the game was finished.

“I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine. Center-backs hardly ever score goals. So, when you do score…I just got carried away,” Maranhao added.

The Jamaica Observer also noted Maranhao giving a quick update on social media after the viral moment hit online.

“At first it was more of a scare than anything else,” he wrote, per the outlet.

“During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn’t really put weight on it, but today I’m feeling much better and recovering well.”

Maranhao played for Operário in 2024 and 2025 as well.

Maranhao is in his second season with Coritiba, which entered Série A this season after playing in Série B last year. He has scored one goal this season across 19 matches played.
