FC Dallas falls in extra time to Sporting KC in US Open Cup quarterfinals

FC Dallas went to extra time in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup quarterfinals against Sporting KC, only to lose Tuesday night’s match on a goal that happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The two clubs were scoreless in the first half and then endured a nearly two-hour weather delay. Sporting’s Willy Agada and FC Dallas’ Petar Musa both scored in the second half and the match went into extra time. Musa’s equalizer came in the 86th minute and was his seventh goal in his last six games.

The winner finally happened in the 111th minute when Sporting’s Johnny Russell sent a corner kick into the box and Dany Rosero found the back of the net and the winning goal. The match happened just a few days after Sporting KC defeated FC Dallas in dramatic fashion in MLS play.

FC Dallas put eight shots on goal compared to Sporting KC’s six shots, but could not break through before Sporting did.

“This game hurts, because I felt like we had so many chances to score, even at the final moments of the game,” FC Dallas interim coach Peter Luccin said. “Talking about the attitude of the players, I have nothing but excellent things to say. In the end the game is about scoring. We concede a lot of goals and we always have to score three or four to win a game. We will head home, rest up and focus on the next challenge.”

Sporting KC moves on to the semifinals of the Open Cup and will compete for the $300,000 in prize money and 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup berth awarded to the winner.

Up next for FC Dallas is a return to MLS play on July 13 against the LA Galaxy.
