North Augusta’s Karly Heath named to UGA staff


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The University of Georgia softball program has appointed Karly Heath as the next Player Development Coordinator.

Heath attended North Augusta before playing for South Carolina and later as an outfielder at Louisiana.

The CSRA native spent last season as the Ragin’ Cajuns graduate assistant.

Coach Tony Baldwin said in a statement to UGA, “Karly is a go-getter and someone who makes our program better. She was a standout player in the SEC and the Sun Belt Conference, including being named Conference Player of the Year in 2023. She was an outstanding pitcher and hitter throughout her college career. Her experience on both sides of the ball will be valuable in helping us develop our team.”

On “X”, Heath said, “Super grateful for this opportunity to work at the University of Georgia. Truly a dream come true for me and can’t wait to get to work. GO DAWGS.”

Now hiring: National hardware chain seeks employees for new Augusta location; how to apply


A new location for a national chain of hardware stores is expected to open in south Augusta this fall and they’re hiring.

Harbor Freight Tools likely will open its third Augusta-area location at 3137 Peach Orchard Rd. in October, according to the company’s website. A spokeswoman said on Tuesday that an official opening date will be announced closer to completion.

The store is expected to employ between 25 and 30 people. Harbor Freight employees about 28,000 at more than 1,500 locations across the country.

“We’ve been looking to open a location in Augusta for a number of years so that we can provide the tools andequipment at tremendous values to the community,” said Trey Feiler, the company’s senior vice president for real estate and construction. “In addition to finding a great location, we were attracted by the availabilityof great associates in the Augusta area, and we look forward to having them join the Harbor Freight team.”

The Augusta Chronicle first reported in May that a leased building area of more than 14,000 square feet was scheduled to undergo a complete buildout that would convert half the area into shelved Harbor Freight sales space.

The proposed new store would be Georgia’s third Harbor Freight in the Augusta area. The others are at 3435 Wrightsboro Rd., in the Richmond Plaza shopping center across from Augusta Mall; and at 4480 Columbia Rd. in Martinez, in the Victoria Station shopping center at the corner of Columbia and South Belair roads.

1 arrested, another sought in Augusta murder of Wrens 16-year-old


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection to a deadly July shooting.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says Malcolm Bryant was arrested on Monday in the death of 16-year-old Sadiq Brown of Wrens.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office said the shooting took place in the parking lot of 2622 Peach Orchard Road on July 5.

The coroner said Brown was shot at least one time and taken to Piedmont Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:34 p.m.

At 10:55 p.m., the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a local hospital about a male subject who had been shot.

Upon arrival, deputies were informed that the male subject had been transported by car to the hospital with at least one gunshot wound.

Bryant is charged with murder and possession of a firearm or knife during a crime, according to the sheriff’s office.

Also in July, Richmond County deputies were looking for 18-year-old Kieran Darnell Walters. Walters is wanted for murder in reference to the shooting that killed Brown.

According to deputies, Walters is known to frequent the Harrisburg Neighborhood and is to be considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting comes amid an outbreak of violent crime that’s killed a little over 170 people across the CSRA since April 2022. Communities large and small have been affected, but as the largest city in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.

Authorities have blamed much of the problem on gangs, and many of the victims and suspects have been young men, like Brown.
