Robbie Ray leads SF Giants over Atlanta for first winning homestand since April
SAN FRANCISCO — Robbie Ray was everything the Giants could ask for on Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park.
In a performance that continued a strong recent stretch, the 34-year-old went eight innings and gave up a single unearned run, leading San Francisco to a 3-2 win.
It was an outing that will only increase potential interest in Ray at the upcoming MLB trade deadline, one where the Giants figure to be busy after ending their first winning homestand since April with a record of 35-48.
The Braves, who remain in first place in the NL East, are 49-33.
Ray was perfect through four innings until Matt Olson broke up his run of 12 consecutive batters retired with a single to center to lead off the fifth.
His shutout bid was ruined in the eighth when Michael Harris II drove in Eli White with a sacrifice fly, but Ray buckled down and retired Ozzie Albies with a popup to center to end the inning.
The Giants got on the board when Luis Arraez scored in the sixth on an infield single by Rafael Devers, running home when Austin Riley’s throw bounced off Olson’s glove and trickled away from him down the right-field line. They scored again when Albies threw the ball past Olson on Jung Hoo Lee’s grounder to the right side, allowing Heliot Ramos to score.
Ramos made his return from a right quad strain Sunday and played in his first game with the Giants since May 15.
Arraez led off the inning with an infield single down the left-field line, and Ramos further set the table with a single to center. Arraez added on in the seventh, bringing in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Drew Gilbert, who had led off the inning with a pinch-hit single to center.
The Sunday matinee was attended by 33,138 fans. Next up for the Giants is a quick six-game trip that begins Monday with an evening game in Arizona and will continue with a three-game set in Colorado over the holiday weekend, starting Friday.

An Orlando-bound Delta Air Lines flight was forced to turn back to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday morning after fumes were reported on the flight deck.
ATLANTA – Law enforcement officers met a Delta flight at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Monday after a dispute broke out between a flight attendant and a passenger.
What we know:
Delta flight 2293 was traveling from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Atlanta when the incident occurred.
According to a Delta spokesperson, the plane landed safely while carrying 180 passengers, four flight attendants and two pilots.
What we don’t know:
Authorities have not confirmed the specific circumstances that led to the disagreement during the flight.
It remains unclear if law enforcement officers made any arrests or issued citations after meeting the aircraft at the gate.

The City of Dunwoody is barring vape shops from opening in parts of the city.
It’s a step already taken by other nearby cities.
The Dunwoody City Council unanimously passed an ordinance restricting vape shops on Monday.
Currently, there are no vape shops in Dunwoody. If one opens, it must be located in commercial districts, at least 600 feet from daycare facilities, schools, and places of worship, and 1,500 feet from another vape shop or gas station.
“Vaping is something we’ve really focused on because it’s so readily available in our community and within our schools,” Amy Halligan said.
Halligan is part of Dunwoody Strong, a parent-run support group for Dunwoody High School students that spreads awareness about substance abuse and promotes mental health. She says vaping products are becoming increasingly popular among children. Halligan is concerned not only about their accessibility but also about how their bright, flashy packaging appeals to young people.
“The children connect with visually appealing things like that,” Halligan said. “The packaging and presentation are so cleverly designed to attract our children, which makes it a significant challenge for us.”
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A prominent Atlanta attorney who represented the mother of a toddler who died in a hot car has been elected to serve on the board of directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Lawrence Zimmerman represented Leanna Taylor (formerly Leanna Harris), the mother of Cooper Harris, the toddler who died in 2014 after being left in a hot SUV by his father, Justin Ross Harris.
While Justin Ross Harris was prosecuted, convicted, and later had his murder conviction overturned in 2022, Leanna Harris was under media and police scrutiny. Zimmerman successfully shielded her from prosecution and navigated her public defense.
Zimmerman, who has been practicing criminal defense law in Atlanta for more than 25 years, also represented rapper Gucci Mane – real name Radric Delantic Davis – who was on probation for an assault conviction. Davis was arrested in 2014 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana and DUI.
Davis was facing a prison sentence of more than three years, but Zimmerman was able to reduce that sentence to one year.
In 2017, a massive fire broke out under an overpass of I-85 at Piedmont Road, quickly escalating and melting the bridge’s concrete and steel supports, causing a major section of the interstate to collapse. This cut off a critical transportation artery for 250,000 daily commuters.
Police arrested Basil Eleby, a 39-year-old homeless man, and accused him of smoking crack cocaine and setting fire to a sofa chair on a shopping cart under the bridge.
Zimmerman joined a high-powered, pro-bono team of civil rights and defense attorneys – including Mawuli Davis, Gerald Griggs, Gary Spencer and Tiffany Roberts – to defend Eleby.
They argued Eleby was being used as a scapegoat to deflect blame from the Georgia Department of Transportation, which had stored massive amounts of highly combustible high-density plastic piping under the bridge for years.
Rather than going to trial where Eleby faced 25 years in prison, Zimmerman and the defense team negotiated a deal, and in December 2017, prosecutors agreed to transfer Eleby’s case to Fulton County’s Behavioral Health Treatment Court.
On February 28, 2020, Eleby successfully graduated from the 18-month mental health and sobriety program, and all felony arson and property damage charges against him were officially dismissed.
Zimmerman attended University of Florida undergraduate school and law school at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. After law school, he moved to Atlanta and opened his own law firm within the first six months of practicing as a lawyer.
He is a past president of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and also serves on the board for the Southern Center for Human Rights.
