Florida motorist accused of firing at Rhode Island home stopped with over 1,000 rounds of ammo

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Florida motorist accused of firing shots at an East Providence home before leading officers on a wild pursuit in Rhode Island last week appeared in court Monday.

More than 1,000 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the black Nissan Armada, and several guns were also found in a backpack discarded along the chase route, according to police.

Law enforcement officials brought more than 100 counts against Joshua Pavao, 43, with a last known address in Kissimmee.

No pleas were entered in court Monday. Bail was at $100,000 with surety, and Pavao was ordered to turn over all of his firearms and his passport.

Pavao lives with a parent in Florida and will be allowed to return to the state only after meeting pre-trial conditions, according to officials.

The court clerk’s office did not immediately have the name of an attorney representing Pavao.

During the chase, the suspect crashed into several other vehicles, officials said.

The pursuit ended with Pavao’s SUV crashing and spilling bullets and cartridges on a roadway in East Providence, police said. Pavao abandoned his vehicle, fled on foot and was arrested, according to police.

“This was an extremely volatile situation involving a dangerous and unpredictable suspect who put so many of our residents and police officers in harm’s way,” Police Chief Christopher Francesconi said in a written statement over the weekend.

Charges included 106 counts of possessing a large capacity feeding device, discharging a weapon from a vehicle, eluding an officer and obstructing officers.

Rhode Island offers myriad cultural and recreational opportunities.

Here’s a clue to help you consider whether you want to relocate in retirement to Rhode Island: Its state nickname is the Ocean State. Nestled in New England, it’s one of the original 13 colonies and home to the historic towns of Providence and Newport.

By some measures, Rhode Island falls short of ideal, ranked the 30th-best state for retirement by Bankrate. For example, it’s not one of the 41 states that don’t tax Social Security benefits. Pension income, along with withdrawals from 401(k) and IRA accounts, are either partially or fully taxable. (There are exemptions of up to $20,000 each for pension and annuity income, which can ease the pain significantly.) The state has an estate tax, too.

What about healthcare? Rhode Island scores fairly well, ranked the 16th-best state in the nation for elderly healthcare by MedicareGuide.com.

The cost of living, according to the World Population Review, is about 11% above the national average — which isn’t ideal, but not that terrible, either. The typical home price in Rhode Island was recently $478,722 — about 31% above the national average. Car insurance, too, is a little steep. It averages $3,494 annually, $477 above average.

If your pencil is about to scratch Rhode Island off your list, hold off on that. Rhode Island is a charming small state, with beaches, parks, and plenty of recreational opportunities. It’s home to the Johnson & Wales culinary school and many terrific restaurants. There’s much history and culture to enjoy in Rhode Island — including theater and music festivals — and Rhode Islanders are also only one to three hours away from Boston, Vermont, New York City, and Maine.

The climate, meanwhile, is moderate. Hurricanes do hit the state on occasion, though.

If you’re intrigued, read up on Rhode Island. Consider spending at least a few months in any location you’re thinking about to make sure it’s a good fit for you and your overall retirement plan.

Rhody comes off a big win over Richmond on Thursday, beating the Spiders 6-0 at home on Breast Cancer Awareness Night to improve their record to 5-5-2.

RAMS SURPASS WIN TOTAL FROM 2023

Rhode Island’s win over Richmond last time out was the fifth win of the season, surpassing the four wins from a year ago.
It’s the first time the Rams have collected five wins since the 2021 season. That year, the Rams were 6-9-2 and had their first appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship in five seasons.
It’s the second 5+ win season for Rhody under head coach Megan Jessee.
A year ago, all four of Rhody’s wins came in the league slate.
The Rams finished 3-3-2 in the non-conference portion of the schedule this season.

RHODE BATTLE

Rhode Island has struggled on the road this season. A win Sunday would be the Ram’s first victory away from Kingston.
This year, Rhody is 0-4-2 on the road.
Last season, head coach Megan Jessee led the Rams to 3-2-4 away from Kingston. It was the best record on the road since the 2016 season when Rhody was 3-5-2 under Michael Needham.
