PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – On Thursdays, we release new US Drought Maps and I always like to see improvement with the maps and we should see some pretty big improvements on the drought maps today.

We will let you know both on the app and on KDKA what the new maps show when they come out at 8:30 this morning.

Besides the drought maps coming out, the other big story is going to be just how hot we get today.

I have Pittsburgh hitting 90° for today’s high.

If we hit 91° or higher it would be the hottest day of the year so far. Our record high for today is 98° so we won’t be anywhere near that.
Highs should be hit around 2 p.m. this afternoon with clouds and even a rain chance sliding in from the west.

The rain chance will continue overnight and stick around through Friday early afternoon. Most of this time will be dry with an occasional passing shower and even a chance for a brief storm.

Friday highs will be a good 10 degrees or so cooler than today with morning lows dipping to near 60° on Saturday and Sunday.

Rain chances will return on Sunday morning with the rain keeping daily highs on Sunday in just the upper 70s.

I have Saturday’s high at 84°.

Penguins’ Sidney Crosby Passes Legend on All-Time Scoring List

The captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins continues to climb the NHL’s all-time scoring list in his 20th season. With an assist in the first against the Edmonton Oilers, Sidney Crosby registered his 1,642nd career point and took sole possession of ninth place on the list. In the process, he surpassed Colorado Avalanche legend and Hall of Famer Joe Sakic.

The Penguins’ star now sits behind none other than fellow franchise legend Mario Lemieux on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. Crosby trails Lemieux by 81 points, as “Le Magnifique” finished his career with 1,723 points.

Humorously enough, the play that gave Crosby his latest accolade was one that barely featured him. His line mate Bryan Rust did most of the work on the play as he worked behind the net and the perimeter wall with the puck before making an excellent backhand feed to Drew O’Connor, who netted a fantastic wrist shot past the Oilers’ goalie.

But in almost every other play this season, it seems like Crosby is the one doing the scoring or setting it up. He leads the team in points this season, with 46 points in 43 games, and is guiding his team back into the postseason picture in the Eastern Conference at age 37.

Crosby’s also made a habit of adding more tallies to his Hall of Fame resume this season. He notched his 600th goal earlier in the year and set a new Penguins franchise record for assists. It’s been a record-collecting 20th season for arguably the greatest player in the history of Pittsburgh hockey.

The Pens are right on the bubble of the playoff picture. They are currently the third place team in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race but are tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets in points. After a poor start to their 2024-2025 campaign, they’ve managed to get their team back to 17-17-2

Insider: Russell Wilson’s Steelers Career in Jeopardy

Insider: Russell Wilson’s Steelers Career in Jeopardy

Once heralded as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback solution, Russell Wilson’s recent fall from grace has some believing that his future with the team will be non-existent if they can’t topple the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

In an appearance on 93.7 The Fan’s The PM Team with Poni & Mueller, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk expressed his opinion that Wilson may be out of a job if the Steelers don’t pull through this weekend.

“If they lose this game on Saturday night, you think anyone wants Russell Wilson back next year?” Florio said.

Wilson’s tenure with Pittsburgh, after signing a one-year deal last March, got off on the wrong foot due to a calf injury he sustained at the beginning of training camp.

After being appointed the starter ahead of Justin Fields entering the regular season, he reaggravated his calf and missed the first six contests of the year.

It didn’t take long for Wilson to redeem himself, however, as the Steelers soared to a 10-3 record after the team went 6-1 over his first seven starts. During that stretch, he threw for 1,784 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions.

In contrast, the final four contests of the campaign were a house of horrors for Pittsburgh. It went 0-4 and squandered its hold on the AFC North to Baltimore, dropping to the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoff picture in the process.

The Steelers were outscored 109-57 throughout their losing streak, and a fair amount of the blame for their shortcomings have been placed on Wilson’s shoulders. He eclipsed 150 passing yards just once over that span while taking 14 sacks and seemingly regressing across the board.

When asked if a poor showing versus the Ravens could spell the end of Wilson’s career, Florio agreed with that notion on the principle that no team would subsequently hand him a starting role on the open market and that he wouldn’t accept a deal as a backup.

“You’re right, because nobody’s gonna hand him a starting job, and he’s not gonna go the Joe Flacco route where he takes whatever spot he can on a depth chart,” Florio said. “He’ll walk away.”

With calls for Fields to get an extended look against the Ravens getting louder by the minute, Wilson is on thin ice as he tries to win back favor before he reaches free agency in the offseason.
