Pittsburgh Weather: Hazy start to Tuesday with isolated afternoon rain chance
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Have you noticed the haze around lately?
- Daily average High: 74 Low: 53
- Sunrise: 5:58 a.m. Sunset: 8:38 p.m.
Today: Pleasant with morning temps in the mid-50s and highs today near 80.
Any Alert Days Ahead?: Nope.
Aware: Powerful cold front rolls through on Wednesday. I now have a scattered rain chance. Rain chance will be around for Memorial Day weekend.
If you’ve been watching KDKA over the last two weeks, there is a solid chance you’ve heard us meteorologists on staff talking about the haze each day.
While it’s been around through the days in varying degrees since at least May 9, there are days and times when it is barely visible. The best chance for noticing the haze has come near sunrise and sunset. It’s always like that, and the reason for that is that the angle through the haze increases as the sun angle decreases.
Think about if you drop something in a pool. It’s far easier to spot it when it is directly below you than if it is just a couple of feet off to the side. Think of the item directly below you as the sun at noon. The haze, or water, doesn’t do a very good job of ‘hiding’ the sun at noon. But just like you all of a sudden notice the water and lose the item when you are off to the side, that’s the sun and haze at sunset and sunrise where the low sun angle makes the haze much more visible.
When it comes to today’s weather, there is a small chance of isolated rain this afternoon due to the heating of the sun. If you see rain it won’t last long, but could be fairly heavy. Temperatures this morning are in the low 50s. Highs today should be near 80. I will call the skies, besides the haze, partly cloudy.
There’s a better chance for rain on Wednesday as a cold front slides through. I have been keeping in a 30% chance for rain on Wednesday, even though model data had kept us dry up until late Monday. I am now bumping up our rain chance to be scattered (40%) on Wednesday afternoon. The chance for rain will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. as the cool front slides through.
Rain, when and if it gets to you, will last less than a half hour, with gusty winds sliding in behind the front.
Looking ahead, there’s going to be a lot of dry time this weekend, but there will be a chance for rain too. The rain chance will be scattered on Sunday and Monday and isolated on Saturday.
Highs over the holiday weekend will be in the mid-70s.

Penguins beat Connor McDavid and Edmonton Oilers with 5-3 victory
Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists to move into ninth on the NHL’s career scoring list as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 on Thursday night.
The Penguins captain tied Hall of Famer Joe Sakic at 1,641 points with an assist on Bryan Rust’s first-period goal. Crosby then moved past Sakic with an assist on Drew O’Connor’s sixth goal of the season later in the period as the Penguins raced to a 4-1 advantage.
Rust also had a goal and two assists for Pittsburgh, which snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Oilers for the first time since Dec. 20, 2019. Alex Nedeljkovic made 40 stops for the Penguins and Rickard Rakell scored his team-high 21st goal as Pittsburgh won without injured center Evgeni Malkin.
McDavid finished with three assists. Leon Draisaitl scored twice to boost his season total to an NHL-best 31, but the Penguins beat Stuart Skinner four times in the first 14 minutes. Skinner settled down to finish with 21 saves but it wasn’t enough as the Penguins ended Edmonton’s four-game winning streak.
Oilers: Their attention to detail in the first period was shaky. While Skinner wasn’t at his best, the Penguins also had little trouble generating chances.
Penguins: Pittsburgh remains a work in progress at midseason but showed it can compete with the league’s best on a given night.
Crosby’s 12th goal 5:42 into the second put the Penguins up 5-1, some welcome wiggle room for a team that has struggled to hold multiple-goal leads.
80 — The number of points Crosby needs to tie Penguins icon Mario Lemieux for eighth (1,723) on the career list.
Edmonton finishes a four-game trip at Chicago on Saturday. The Penguins continue a five-game homestand on Saturday against Ottawa.

Penguins’ Sidney Crosby Passes Legend on All-Time Scoring List
The captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins continues to climb the NHL’s all-time scoring list in his 20th season. With an assist in the first against the Edmonton Oilers, Sidney Crosby registered his 1,642nd career point and took sole possession of ninth place on the list. In the process, he surpassed Colorado Avalanche legend and Hall of Famer Joe Sakic.
The Penguins’ star now sits behind none other than fellow franchise legend Mario Lemieux on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. Crosby trails Lemieux by 81 points, as “Le Magnifique” finished his career with 1,723 points.
Humorously enough, the play that gave Crosby his latest accolade was one that barely featured him. His line mate Bryan Rust did most of the work on the play as he worked behind the net and the perimeter wall with the puck before making an excellent backhand feed to Drew O’Connor, who netted a fantastic wrist shot past the Oilers’ goalie.
But in almost every other play this season, it seems like Crosby is the one doing the scoring or setting it up. He leads the team in points this season, with 46 points in 43 games, and is guiding his team back into the postseason picture in the Eastern Conference at age 37.
Crosby’s also made a habit of adding more tallies to his Hall of Fame resume this season. He notched his 600th goal earlier in the year and set a new Penguins franchise record for assists. It’s been a record-collecting 20th season for arguably the greatest player in the history of Pittsburgh hockey.
The Pens are right on the bubble of the playoff picture. They are currently the third place team in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race but are tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets in points. After a poor start to their 2024-2025 campaign, they’ve managed to get their team back to 17-17-2

Insider: Russell Wilson’s Steelers Career in Jeopardy
Once heralded as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback solution, Russell Wilson’s recent fall from grace has some believing that his future with the team will be non-existent if they can’t topple the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
In an appearance on 93.7 The Fan’s The PM Team with Poni & Mueller, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk expressed his opinion that Wilson may be out of a job if the Steelers don’t pull through this weekend.
“If they lose this game on Saturday night, you think anyone wants Russell Wilson back next year?” Florio said.
Wilson’s tenure with Pittsburgh, after signing a one-year deal last March, got off on the wrong foot due to a calf injury he sustained at the beginning of training camp.
After being appointed the starter ahead of Justin Fields entering the regular season, he reaggravated his calf and missed the first six contests of the year.
It didn’t take long for Wilson to redeem himself, however, as the Steelers soared to a 10-3 record after the team went 6-1 over his first seven starts. During that stretch, he threw for 1,784 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions.
In contrast, the final four contests of the campaign were a house of horrors for Pittsburgh. It went 0-4 and squandered its hold on the AFC North to Baltimore, dropping to the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoff picture in the process.
The Steelers were outscored 109-57 throughout their losing streak, and a fair amount of the blame for their shortcomings have been placed on Wilson’s shoulders. He eclipsed 150 passing yards just once over that span while taking 14 sacks and seemingly regressing across the board.
When asked if a poor showing versus the Ravens could spell the end of Wilson’s career, Florio agreed with that notion on the principle that no team would subsequently hand him a starting role on the open market and that he wouldn’t accept a deal as a backup.
“You’re right, because nobody’s gonna hand him a starting job, and he’s not gonna go the Joe Flacco route where he takes whatever spot he can on a depth chart,” Florio said. “He’ll walk away.”
With calls for Fields to get an extended look against the Ravens getting louder by the minute, Wilson is on thin ice as he tries to win back favor before he reaches free agency in the offseason.
