Pittsburgh-area Taylor Swift fans flock to theaters for

MCCANDLESS, Pa. (KDKA) — Taylor Swift announced her new movie, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” hit theaters on Thursday, a day earlier than scheduled.

Fans of the superstar did not waste any time and went to see the movie at the Cinemark North Hills and XD.

“Me and my mom have been Swifties since I was 4 years old,” Hailey Duffy said.

Swift planned to have the big release on Oct. 13, her favorite number, but chose to surprise her fans a day early.

It’s a cinematic concert experience and an opportunity for those who couldn’t attend her concerts in person. It is also a chance for those who loved the concerts so much the first time around to celebrate it again with fellow fans in a theater.

“I’ve seen the concert and we’re coming here to see it again,” Brilee Edwards said.

Fans were encouraged by Swift to dress up as their favorite lyrics, themes in music videos or in any era that relates to them.

“I’m an ‘Anti-Hero’ ghost,” Edwards said.

The anticipation for the film was palpable. Domestic pre-sales set records with a 10 times higher demand than any other event film for Cinemark.

Because of the demand, the theater chain is offering fans more than just a visual experience. There are also collectible Swift-themed popcorn tubs filled with iridescent popcorn.

“They put pink glitter on the popcorn,” Lilah Boeh said. “I got two cans of this. I made two bracelets with my favorite songs on them.”

Swift also set a special price for the show, charging her birth year of 1989, $19.89, for adults and her lucky number of 13, $13.13, for kids and seniors.

Though the prices are higher than typical movie tickets, fans coming to see the film are hoping for some surprises.

“I hope we get new songs,” Izzy Leighty said. I know she changed up the songs a little bit.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pro-Palestinian protesters have set up a new encampment at the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The protesters have established the camp outside the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt’s campus in the Oakland neighborhood. They have set up a fence and a human chain around the encampment.

In a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the University of Pittsburgh Police Department said, “The Cathedral of Learning and William Pitt Union are closed due to a public disturbance.”

Pitt police is asking people to avoid the area, adding that city and university police are responding.

When asked what message the protesters are trying to share with the camp, they referred KDKA-TV to a statement they posted on Instagram, which said in part:

“From its continued and deafening silence to material investments in the ‘Israel’ occupation, Pitt maintains its complicity in genocide in Gaza.”

They are also asking for Pitt to “disclose all university investments,” and “divest University of Pittsburgh finances, including the endowment, from companies and institutions that profit from Israel,” among others.

This comes after the Schenley Plaza encampment near the University of Pittsburgh cleared in late April. During that time, two people were arrested by Pitt police as protesters tried to occupy the area around the Cathedral of Learning.

College campuses across the United States have seen demonstrations since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began in October.

PITTSBURGH ― Country superstar Kenny Chesney’s 12th Pittsburgh stadium show Saturday drew a personal record of 60,126 spectators.

A flotilla of fans, eight and 10 boats deep, docked on the North Shore outside the stadium also partaking in the fun.

“They call it Steel Town for a reason,” Chesney said afterward in a press release. “They came to see with a purpose! Those hearts are so strong and true: you could hear it when they sang, and looking out, you could see it in the way they waved their arms side-to-side. They were on their feet and had their hands in the air the entire show. I knew I was going to do ‘There Goes My Life’ when I woke up, but seeing the entire stadium lit up with their lights? It’s one of the most beautiful memories of my life.”

Chesney’s 2024 tour has been setting personal records since kicking off in Tampa. Uncle Kracker and Megan Moroney, an Academy of Country Music Awards’ female nominee, joined Chesney on stage at Acrisure for “All The Pretty Girls.”

A total of 622,882 concertgoers have attended Chesney’s 12 Pittsburgh stadium shows, the press release said.

“Build it with friendship and love, and something really special happens,” Chesney said. “The band is white hot and so tight; you can feel how much fun they’re having with every solo and jam – and the audience picks up on that. It was an undeniably incredible night, and as much as people thought we were crazy doing this in Pittsburgh in 2005, I can say absolutely, No Shoes Nation always shows up and delivers. They lifted us again to new heights.”

Taylor Swift holds Acrisure/Heinz Field’s single-show attendance record of 73,117, set last year.

Insider: Steelers Using Justin Fields Like Derrick Henry?

PITTSBURGH — With Russell Wilson being named the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Justin Fields has continued to work towards more opportunities with his new team.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spoke on the Steelers’ quarterback situation on NFL Live, providing new information he had heard.

“Russell Wilson’s undisputably the QB number one. He’s not splitting reps. However, I’ve talked to multiple teams who expect the Steelers to utilize Justin Fields as a runner and passer in the goal line, think eight yards and in.” said Fowler. “Arthur Smith, the new OC, used Derrick Henry as a quarterback/passer when he was in Tennessee calling plays, so why couldn’t you use a guy like Fields with his big-time ability?”

In three NFL seasons, Fields has totaled 2,220 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, including a 1,000-yard season in 2022. The Steelers are favoring Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback, but the the athleticism that Fields carries, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he does take snaps during a game.

If he does, it’ll also allow the Steelers to see what they have the in 25-year-old quarterback prior to his contract expiring. If Fields intends to be the future in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers intend to give him that opportunity, they may want to see how electric he can be during live-game action.
