Penguins Perspectives: This is the greatest show

Welcome to Penguins Views, a weekly column by KDKA-TV Digital Producer Patrick Damp. Every Monday, Patrick will speak in regards to the week that was, the week to return, what to observe for, and extra.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Everyone knows what is going on on with the Penguins proper now.

They’re preventing for a playoff spot, the roster would not look that deep, they can not seem to discover constant goaltending, and a file playoff streak seems to be in actual jeopardy.

So, this week, reasonably than as soon as once more level out every thing that is going incorrect, I wish to do some waxing poetic in regards to the recreation I like so, a lot.

As I’ve mentioned on this column loads of occasions, I’ll contemplate myself a little bit of a hockey analyst however one factor I am not going to do due to that, is surrender my fandom of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Somebody I’ve tried to mannequin myself after, ever-so-slightly as a result of nobody likes a thief, is Steve Dangle (Glynn) in Canada. To me, Dangle defines what it means to be an analyst that does not overlook the place they got here from. I do know he is a little bit of a polarizing determine in hockey circles, however the man may be essential of his favourite group whereas ensuring you are absolutely conscious he’s a fan of that group.

Even pre-Dangle’s rise within the hockey world, I at all times discovered it form of trivial that sports activities analysts needed to faux they had been utterly unbiased. Certain, there are individuals who cherished the concept of being a sports activities journalist, and easily writing about sports activities was the tip purpose and to them, I tip my cap.

That does not imply I wish to swing too far within the different course and be an outright cheerleader. I believe those that learn this column know whereas I’m a fan of the Penguins, I’ve no drawback calling them out when issues are going nicely or voicing my displeasure with gamers or administration.

Nevertheless, to me, sports activities are the unique and the best actuality tv present to ever exist. The stakes, the drama, the tales, and the moments all can’t be replicated. One of the best a part of all of it? It would not often materially impression the actual world, however within the couple of hours that it is occurring? Nothing else issues in anyway.

Which brings me to Saturday night time towards the Capitals.

My finest pal’s birthday was the day prior, my sister was on the town, and so was my girlfriend’s sister. We selected an evening out at a Penguins recreation at PPG Paints Area, and would not you understand it, it was a rivalry recreation.

Penguins vs. Capitals, Crosby and Malkin vs. Ovechkin and Backstrom. Each groups preventing to get into the postseason and the Penguins having an opportunity to place one other nail of their rivals’ coffin, all on residence ice.

My girlfriend is not the most important hockey fan, god bless her although she places up with my ranting and raving about it, and neither is her sister. The truth is, Saturday was her sister’s first NHL recreation.

What a time to expertise it, huh?

Those that know, know that hockey is considerably higher in particular person than on TV. It is one way or the other a sport that’s tailored for tv but nonetheless higher when it occurs proper in entrance of you.

The velocity, the talent, the brutality, the sounds and smells, all of it’s an suave chaos of movement.

As I donned a house Jeff Carter jersey and walked to Part 234 of PPG Paints Area with my family and friends in tow, I noticed loads of Penguins jerseys however there have been actually lots of crimson and white jerseys sprinkled all through the sector.

I seemed over at my finest pal and mentioned, “That is going to be a rattling enjoyable recreation tonight.”

Certain sufficient, because the Penguins and Capitals traded possibilities, the followers traded barbs all through the higher bowl – dueling between “Let’s go Pens” and “Let’s go Caps” and whereas it felt like a little bit of a powder keg, it was two fanbases that had seen all of it for the reason that 2004 lockout and have come to understand each other with begrudging respect.

The Penguins congratulated Crosby on one other 30-goal season and the locations cheered loudly.

Then Ryan Mill congratulated Alex Ovechkin for passing Gordie Howe on the all-time goal-scorers checklist and we cheered loudly once more.

Within the second interval, we received to expertise every thing that is nice a couple of reside hockey recreation. The Penguins scored two targets, Josh Archibald and Ramus Sandin received right into a struggle, and Casey DeSmith made a number of, gigantic saves, resulting in unprompted chants of “Case-y! Case-y! Case-y!”

As the sport progressed, myself, my finest pal, and my sister all continued to be the diehards that we’re – speaking to the sport as if the gamers may hear our solutions, leaping out of our seats for targets, booing the gamers we like to boo, and naturally, placing our palms to our faces because the Penguins surrendered yet one more multi-goal lead.

Nevertheless, as I seemed over, I noticed two individuals who hadn’t come from a lot of a hockey household step by step get into it and by the point Evgeni Malkin stole the puck from Anthony Mantha at heart ice, charged in on Darcy Kuemper, beating him just below the blocker and provides the Penguins a 4-3 lead with lower than two minutes to go, going simply as loopy as us previous diehards had been.

At the same time as I used to be smiling, screaming, and high-fiving these round me, my smile wasn’t a lot from Evgeni Malkin beating the modern-day Penguins’ largest rivals, it was realizing that the sport offers you moments.

I additionally could not assist however consider Moneyball – “How may you not be romantic about [hockey?]”

The sport of hockey offers you moments, and it is what you do with these moments that make them final.

Evgeni Malkin made a Saturday night time in March a second that solely sports activities can present.

Analyst Makes Massive Prediction About Steelers

PITTSBURGH– Stephen A Smith loves to talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers. The news of the Mike Tomlin extension gives him even more reason to talk about the black and gold. Usually, the Steelers are fodder for Smith’s well-known monologues and tirades, but this latest news has him a bit more mellow.

On a recent appearance on ESPN’s First Take, Smith shared his thoughts on the recent extension. He was extremely complimentary of Tomlin as a person, offering extensive praise for the Steeler’s coach. He was much less confident in his team’s Super Bowl chances, however.

“This man is something special and he deserves his bag and I’m happy for him…Having said that, um, it’s no knock against him but I don’t see the Steelers winning the Super Bowl in three years. I hope I’m wrong.”

His expectations for the Steelers during Tomlin’s upcoming extension lie somewhere less ambitious. While he doesn’t view them as true contenders, he didn’t write the Steelers off completely.

“I can’t look at that and say, ‘I see a Super Bowl.’ But I do see them as a playoff team. I do see them contending and I’m happy that Mike Tomlin got his extension.”

Smith’s words echo the main criticism levied against Mike Tomlin over the last decade. Many doubt he is capable of leading the Steelers back to the Super Bowl.

They may have a case. The Steelers haven’t won a Super Bowl in 15 years and haven’t returned to the big game since losing to the Packers in 2011.

Pundits and fans look at Tomlin’s success and find issues as well. The team’s Super Bowl victory in 2009 is often attributed to Bill Cowher, as the roster was very similar to the team that won in 2006. And while the Steelers maintain their belief in Tomlin, the team hasn’t won a playoff game since losing in the AFC Championship in 2017.

With the latest extension, the Steelers are betting on Tomlin to prove Stephen A. Smith wrong. 2024 could be the year for him to do so, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields giving him the best QB combination the Steelers have seen since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement. Add in an elite defense, a re-worked offensive line, and a highly motivated head coach, and the Steelers could be in a prime position to prove Smith’s prediction wrong.
