'Unreal': Whale Capsizes Boat Off New Hampshire Coast

Two occupants of a fishing vessel are safe Tuesday after a whale surfaced under their boat, capsizing it off the New Hampshire shore, according to the US Coast Guard. The incident occurred Tuesday near Odiorne Point State Park, the AP reports. The Coast Guard posted to X that they had received a mayday call stating that a 23-foot center console boat had turned over because of a whale breach. “The occupants were ejected from the vessel as the boat capsized,” the Coast Guard posted, adding that an urgent marine information broadcast was issued and the Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor was alerted.

“A good Samaritan recovered both individuals from the water. No injuries were reported,” the Coast Guard posted. The good Samaritans were two teens who were fishing nearby, CBS News reports. One of them tells the station the experience was “unreal,” and that he plans to always wear a life jacket from here on out. And one of the fishermen on the capsized boat notes of whales, “This is their home. This is their ocean, so we’re in their way.” The boat crew from Station Portsmouth reported that the whale appeared not to be injured. The incident was reported to the Center of Coastal Studies Marine Animal Hotline and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The vessel has also been salvaged. (More whale stories.)

A Massachusetts woman suffered serious head injuries in a snowmobile crash in New Hampshire on Monday afternoon.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said it was notified shortly after 3 p.m. Monday that a snowmobile had crashed on the Lower Haystack Trail off of Bear Notch Road in Bartlett.

They said 40-year-old Jiamin Wei, of Chestnut Hill, had been driving a rented snowmobile when she failed to negotiate a downhill left hand turn and drove off the right side of the trail into a ditch, hitting a tree. Her 10-year-old son was a passenger on the machine.

Wei and her son were riding as part of a tour, and the guide was able to quickly call for help and provide an accurate location for rescuers. Along with a Fish and Game conservation officer, members of the Bartlett/Jackson Ambulance Service, the Bartlett Fire Department and the Bartlett Police Department responded.
