An illegal immigrant admitted to strangling a woman on her 21st birthday, then dragging her body past a police cruiser and burying her in the woods. 

Jhon Moises Chacaguasay-Ilbis, 21, pleaded guilty in a Syracuse court Tuesday to second-degree murder in the June 18 slaying of Joselyn Jhoana Toaquiza, Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney Rob Moran told WSYR.

In exchange for a guilty plea, Judge Ted Limpert agreed to sentence the killer to no more than 25 years to life behind bars, the outlet reported.

A source from the Department of Homeland Security recently told the New York Post both Chacaguasay-Ilbis and Toaquiza were in the U.S. illegally. Both are from Ecuador and had known each other since primary school, according to the outlet.

Prosecutor Alphonse Williams told The Post-Standard of Syracuse the suspect was staying at an Airbnb at the time of the murder. He reportedly traveled to see Toaquiza on her 21st birthday.

Eerie surveillance footage shows the pair walking into the Airbnb around 4:30 p.m. on June 18. A few hours later, Chacaguasay-Ilbis was recorded carrying a slumped-over Toaquiza on his back. He reportedly used a ligature to strangle the woman.

Williams alleged Chacaguasay-Ilbis buried Toaquiza’s body in a shallow grave in Lincoln Park before taking a Greyhound bus to New York City. He later turned himself in to the authorities.

Toaquiza’s corpse was found on June 22, WSYR reported.

Chacaguasay-Ilbis crossed the U.S. border into El Paso, Texas, in January 2023 and was captured, then released because there was no space to hold him, according to the Post. 

Toaquiza crossed into the country in Lukeville, Arizona, a few months later on June 19, 2023, the outlet reported. She told border agents that she was fleeing an abusive partner; it is unclear whether that was her killer. 

Chacaguasay’s sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 14, according to online court records.

“While they can’t move out of the second apron, the Celtics are another team exploring avenues to potentially save some money by trading Jaden Springer’s $4 million contract,” Siegel writes.

He continues, “Pelicans swingman Javonte Green is a player the Celtics hold interest in, sources said, but New Orleans doesn’t want to take back more money. The Bucks, Nuggets, and New York Knicks have also been mentioned as teams holding a level of interest in Green.”

New Orleans is slightly above the luxury tax and will most definitely move to dip under it. The team received a slight relief after guard Dejounte Murray missed Saturday’s game against the Hornets. Murray had incentives written in his contract for playing in 65 games this season, which now can’t happen because of his missed time.

The Pelicans signed Javonte Green this offseason after losing key bench players like Naji Marshall and Dyson Daniels over the summer. Green is averaging 21 minutes per game, 6.1 points, and 3.4 rebounds per contest. Green has been one of the healthiest players on the Pelicans this year, playing in 41 of the team’s 46 games.

PITTSBURGH — Several former Pittsburgh Steelers players are set to compete in Conference Championship Weekend, hoping to give their team the edge and head to the Super Bowl in 2025.

The Steelers have former representatives on all four teams compete in the AFC and NFC Championships, with their most represented roster coming by the Kansas City Chiefs with five former players on their team.

In the AFC Championship game, former Steelers include: quarterback Chris Oladokun, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, cornerbacks Steven Nelson and Darius Rush, kicker Matthew Wright, and quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

Trubisky is the only member of the Bills, with the other five playing for Kansas City. Oladokun, Nelson and Rush are both on their practice squad.

In the NFC Championship game, the Steelers have four former players, and somewhat of the same scenario as the AFC. Quarterback Kenny Pickett will be the lone former Steelers on the Philadelphia Eagles, while the Washington Commanders have three players – running back Jeremy McNichols, linebacker Mykal Walker and offensive tackle Trenton Scott.

A former Steeler is guaranteed to walk away a Super Bowl champion in 2025, with Smith-Schuster looking to win his second and Oladokun looking to win his third.
