Who are the top 50 Boston athletes of past 50 years? Curran ranks 10-1
That is it. The highest 10 best Boston gamers of the previous 50 years in my very subjective opinion.
The entire listing is testomony to how lucky we have been in our sports-consuming lives to witness, cheer for and — in my case — cowl and get to know a number of the best performers within the historical past of American sports activities.
Thanks for following alongside and for all of the dialog. Subsequent week I will put out an inventory of all of the individuals I hosed who did not get on right here. It is mind-blowing
Curran’s High 50 Boston athletes of the previous 50 years: No. 50-41 | No. 40-31 | No. 30-21 | No. 20-11
Editor’s Word: Tom E. Curran ranked the highest 50 Boston athletes of the previous 50 years this week, counting down from 50 with 10 gamers per day. Try the earlier lists within the hyperlinks above.
10. John Havlicek
Hondo was born in 1940 a few week after my dad. Because of this, I seen him as impossibly previous as he performed out his ultimate seasons with the Celtics once I began watching. And since my dad was a reasonably spherical 5-foot-6 and never probably the most athletic fella, I discovered Havlicek to be a marvel.
He ran and ran and ran and was nonetheless taking part in 35 minutes an evening even on the finish of his profession. He’d been drafted by the Cleveland Browns too, I used to be advised, so he checked the packing containers in my two favourite sports activities, and the reverence for the man within the winter of his profession made him appear to be a demigod. And he type of was.
Have a look again at his stats: He performed fewer than 75 video games as soon as in his 16-year profession. He performed all 82 in his ultimate season, averaging 16.1 per sport, which was his lowest common since his rookie yr. The man simply might have performed one other 5 seasons and doubtless continued to be an All-Star.
He was a ridiculously good mid-range shooter and an outstanding athlete. Regardless that he got here into the league earlier than the sport made its late-70s transition to an age when guys truly dribbled with each arms, you’ll be able to see there are elements of his sport that will journey to 2022.
Gronk is the youngest man on the listing and he’s right here as a result of he was an entire and utter drive of nature on the sector and an imitable and real character (and Boston icon) off of it. If I needed to think about three totally different photographs that captured Gronk, it could be Minion Hat Gronk, Little Nutcracker Dude Gronk and Diving Catch in SB53 Gronk.
Listed below are 50 Gronk performs with the Patriots. There are in all probability one other 50 on the reducing room flooring that will match.
8. Carl Yastrzemski
Yaz performed 41 seasons with the Pink Sox. Truly, 23. But it surely simply appeared like he was a Pink Sox since historical instances. Like Hondo, Yaz was principally the identical age as my dad (born in August 1939) and in contrast to Hondo he simply stored taking part in and taking part in and taking part in all the best way into the early 80s. So Yaz was a part of my consciousness from the yr I used to be born (a month after the Not possible Dream World Collection loss to the Cardinals) till I used to be 16.
Yaz wasn’t as dynamic as so most of the different guys on this listing however he was a fixture, a continuing, a part of on a regular basis life rising up in New England. Have you learnt how drastically the world modified from 1961, when Yaz took over for Ted Williams, till 1983 when he retired? It’s chaotic now, positive. And scary. And there’s plenty of discuss of existential threats.
Think about the way it felt dwelling by the Chilly Struggle, the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK, the violence, riots, unemployment, inflation, battle, invasions and hostage crises of the 60s and 70s? Sports activities lent just a little ballast. And Yaz was on the middle of Boston sports activities.
7. Jim Rice
Private desire rating. Sorry, not sorry.
Jim Rice in 1978 submitted as dominant a season as anybody on this listing did of their greatest yr. I didn’t even must search for his numbers: .315, 46, 139. Performed 163 video games (one-game playoff vs. Yankees). In a three-season span from 1977 to 1979 he had 124 homers and 383 RBIs with 1,157 complete bases. He missed six video games. He additionally — bizarrely — had 15 triples in each 1977 and ’78.
The scale, pace and Bunyanesque energy of the man was mesmerizing. Watch this. Inform me it doesn’t appear to be he’s hitting golf balls.
It’s fairly superb to suppose that Large Papi by no means fell off. Even in his ultimate yr with screaming ache in his Achilles, he had 626 plate appearances, led the league with 48 doubles and 127 RBI and had 38 homers. He had 35 or extra in every of his ultimate three seasons.
So he was a tremendous and dominant performer along with being extremely clutch, being a significant drive on the Sox groups that broke The Curse in 2004 and added two extra titles after that.
The reciprocal love between Ortiz and Boston exhibited in his “That is our f****** metropolis!” speech after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was apparent. After we’re speaking about excellence, significance to the area and being a fascinating performer, Ortiz had all of it.
5. Pedro Martinez
Why do I’ve Pedro forward of Ortiz? Pedro at his greatest might have been the best practitioner of the artwork of pitching within the historical past of the game. And we had been fortunate sufficient to witness it, as I mentioned once I began this listing. Appointment viewing. I can hyperlink the highlights. Or I can hyperlink the SportsCentury episode. Let’s go together with the SportsCentury.
4. Marvin Hagler
It’s actually laborious now to fathom the grip that Marvelous Marvin Hagler had on the area from 1979 to 1987. Combating out of Brockton, he was a significant sport unto himself, as vital because the Pink Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriots.
On the nights he fought, there was a Sport 7 ambiance to the occasion. There was additionally a regional delight at play that was distinctive in that Hagler was preventing internationally. He received the middleweight title at Wembley over Alan Minter, knocking Minter’s mouthpiece into the gang after which being showered with bottles and particles by racist British followers. That outrage coming months after Hagler was robbed of the title in a draw with Vito Antuofermo made Hagler extra cherished due to what he’d gone by.
Boxing was totally different 40 years in the past. It nonetheless held the world’s consideration, particularly the middleweight division, with Hagler presiding and shortly to be joined by Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran as they moved up in weight class. Hagler additionally fought each two months or so with the biggies being the rematch with Antuofermo in 1982 at Boston Backyard, a 1983 dispatching of Duran and his April 1985 bout with Hearns which might rank as presumably probably the most livid 9 minutes of motion over the previous 50 years. (There’s plenty of competitors … perhaps we listing these subsequent summer time).
All of it floor to a horrible halt in April of 1987 when Hagler — after preventing simply as soon as in 1986 — misplaced a controversial determination to Leonard. The area mourned. Hagler by no means fought once more. Destruction and Destroy.
3. Bobby Orr
Hagler might have held the area’s consideration in an entirely distinctive approach when he fought, however Bobby Orr modified habits and created INDUSTRY. He got here to Boston on the age of 18 and exceeded each unattainable expectation and dream laid out for him that started when the Bruins signed him at 14 (!!).
His arrival and the Bruins’ ensuing success touched off hockey insanity in New England. All people wished to play hockey. Rinks went up everywhere and a technology of youngsters began staggering round on skates.
It was no coincidence that the 1980 Miracle On Ice gold medal crew was chockful of New England and Massachusetts children. Orr wasn’t right here for a very long time. However he was right here for all-time. One of many best performers in any sport, his spot here’s a layup.
Like Orr, Hen presided over a franchise renaissance. Like Hagler, he was ours and consultant of our view of ourselves — relentless, hardworking, able to combat, substance over type — in distinction to the flash and sizzle of sentimental Magic and the Showtime Lakers.
Larry Hen was one of the best participant in basketball from 1984 to 1986, profitable three straight MVPs. He took the Celtics from being the least likeable crew in Boston when he arrived to probably the most embraced. He led the C’s to 3 championships and on daily basis of the 13 years he was right here he was inimitably true to himself and Boston.
Have a look at the opposite guys up within the high 10. Yaz may very well be prickly. Ortiz may very well be whiny. Pedro may very well be a diva. Havlicek was kinda boring. Gronk shot his approach out of city. There was nothing — completely nothing — to dislike about the best way Larry Hen did his enterprise.
Actually, one of many crowning moments in Hen’s tenure right here was when he defused Isiah Thomas’ racial feedback about Hen solely being celebrated as an excellent participant as a result of he was white. Boston flipped. The media flipped. Swords had been figuratively drawn. And what does Hen do? Sits down for a press convention with Isiah and says, “If Isiah tells me it was mentioned in a joking method I believe we should always go away it at that.” Extra of that now and without end. Larry Legend.

Greater Boston enjoys a light snow, travel not significantly impacted – The Boston Globe
The snow showers come from a weakening system approaching from the Great Lakes that tapped into some of the moisture from a strong storm passing south of New England.
The region was spared the worst precipitation of the storm thanks to persistent sub-freezing temperatures earlier this week, which pushed it south toward its current location off the coast of North Carolina, Nocera said. New England’s light snowfall is on the northern fringes of the storm.
Nocera added that this weekend’s “decorative snow” will not significantly impact ground travel.
The Massachusetts Port Authority issued a travel advisory for flight delays at Boston Logan International Airport. According to the flight tracking website Flight Aware, as of around 1:00 p.m. 212 flights were delayed at Boston Logan and another 15 were cancelled.
Margo Griffin, a teaching associate at the University of Cambridge in England, was initially worried about driving through the snow on her way to get coffee in Cambridge, but said the view from the Charles River was worth the trek.
“I thought it might be a problem, but I just decided to go ahead with the plan, and I’m enjoying walking through the snow,” Griffin said.
Other Boston-area residents who spoke to the Globe Saturday morning were happy to wake up to the winter scene on Saturday.
“I am feeling wonderful about the snow. I haven’t seen it in a long time,” said Barbara Delollis, a communications lead at Harvard Business School.
Delollis already made snow day plans.
“We want to go out and have some fun in the snow, and take a lot of pictures and just remember this moment, because we don’t know how much more snowfall we’re going to see in the Boston area anymore with climate change,” Delollis said.
Talia, a Cambridge resident, said that the snow had no effect on her plans to attend synagogue with her two-year-old son Saturday morning.
“It feels nice and seasonal, which is cool because climate change is terrifying,” she said.
Snowstorms can still occur, despite warming temperatures from climate change, Nocera said. Although Saturday’s snowfall cannot guarantee heavy snow this winter, there is a slightly higher chance of snow towards the end of the month as cold temperatures ease.

Boston College drops Hockey East contest to Merrimack
The second-ranked Boston College men’s hockey team suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to Merrimack by a score of 5-2 in Hockey East action on Friday night at Kelley Rink. The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second, but the Warriors scored the next five. BC falls to 12-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in Hockey East, while Merrimack improves to 8-10-1 overall and 4-5-1 in league play. The Eagles opened the scoring midway through the first period when Oskar Jellvik one-timed the rebound off an Aram Minnetian shot that was saved by the Merrimack goaltender. Minnetian’s shot fell right into the path of Jellvik for the quick shot into the open net to put the Eagles in front. BC added to its lead shortly into the second period when Brady Berard scored a short-handed goal. Merrimack responded 32 seconds later with a power-play goal to get on the board, before scoring the game-tying goal less than one minute after that. Syracuse men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Boston College
The Syracuse Orange (7-8, 1-3) are back on the road tomorrow to face the Boston College Eagles (9-6, 1-3). The game tips off at 3:00 ET on The CW and here’s what we’re predicting in this #OrangeEagle battle:
Kevin: Syracuse 82, Boston College 80
I’m thinking this is higher scoring than the metrics suggest because neither team defends well. I also have a feeling that Elijah Moore hits double-figures in this one. Moore didn’t make a shot against Georgia Tech, but he didn’t commit a turnover and I’m looking for him to get an early 3 to drop and for him to find space as the Eagles try and contain JJ Starling and Eddie Lampkin. It’s not going to be pretty, but I’m taking Syracuse to get their 1st road win of the year.
Max: Syracuse 72, Boston College 65
The Orange finally have some momentum going into this one and a lowly Eagles team is just what the doctor ordered for another win. Believe it or not, Syracuse’s offense shoots better from the field and commits fewer turnovers than BC (and most of those numbers are without Starling). We’ll see if Donnie Freeman suits up, but hopefully, it doesn’t matter against a Boston College defense that allows its opponents to shoot over 57% in conference play (worst rate in ACC).
Dom: Syracuse 79, Boston College 73
BC’s offense over the course of the year is very much hot or cold, but I don’t expect a repeat performance of the Orange’s defense compared to how things turned out against Georgia Tech. That being said, if both defenses are going to be suspect, Syracuse will have the best scorer on the floor and I think this is the game we see J.J. Starling have a pre-injury-like performance that propels Syracuse to the win column once again.
Szuba: Syracuse 78, Boston College 71
Syracuse has certainly struggled and has been shorthanded this year, but it still hasn’t fallen to the Boston College threshold. BC doesn’t do much of anything well — it rebounds decently, it shoots from three at a fair clip but overall the offense is poor and its defense is worse. I would think Syracuse should be able to score the ball more effectively in this game as opposed to last. Starling leads the way once more with solid contributions from Lampkin and the supporting cast as the Orange win its second straight conference game.
Sam: Boston College 72, Syracuse 70
This prediction hinges on Donnie Freeman not playing, if he does, I’d probably lean towards Syracuse by a point or two. Without him, I’m just not confident enough to pick the Orange on the road – a building they lost in last year – even against a bad Boston College team. There’s undoubtedly a path to a win, specifically, if the Orange can force about 15 or more turnovers, and convert off of them. A true toss-up game for me.
Mike: Syracuse 78, Boston College 70
Two really bad defenses should make these not-so-great offenses look better for one afternoon. Like Sam said this is the definition of a toss-up and I really think it’ll be close all the way through. This should be a time where Lampkin can use his size in the paint and be the one to break the stalemate.
