Rhode Island's Washington Bridge demolition set to continue Tuesday

The demolition of the Washington Bridge in Rhode Island is set to continue on Tuesday.

The bridge takes Interstate 195 across the Seekonk River, connecting Rhode Island with Massachusetts.

The westbound side was suddenly shut down in December over safety concerns, but demolition stopped in September to preserve evidence tied to a lawsuit over the bridge’s failure.

State transportation officials held a public meeting about the bridge on Friday, but it only lasted nine minutes, and they didn’t answer any questions.

“Specifically the fact that it was 6 p.m. on a Friday wasn’t sufficient enough, and people weren’t satisfied, so we’re going to hopefully do a take two and we’ll have an opportunity for people to have their questions answered,” Providence City Councilor John Goncalves told NBC10 Boston.

Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee is expected to give an update at 10 a.m. Tuesday about the bridge demolition.

Where Boston College Men’s Hockey is Ranked After Week 1

The Boston College Eagles men’s hockey team split its series opener over the weekend against the Michigan State Spartans.

On Friday, the Eagles won 3-0 with goals from Will Vote and Oskar Jellvik, while on Saturday, they fell 4-3 after the Spartans scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods.

The split, however, didn’t impact Boston College’s rankings as it remained No. 2 with 927 total pints and two first-place votes in the USCHO poll.

The Eagles are narrowly behind the Denver Pioneers, who secured 994 points and 47 first-place votes. Boston University is No. 3 with 902 points, Michigan State stayed at No. 4, with 847 and North Dakota capped off the top five with 800.

The other program to receive a first-place vote this week was Cornell, who sits at No. 8 with 614 points.

More workers join hotel strike in Boston

Hundreds of workers from the Omni Parker House and the Omni Boston Seaport Hotels are expected to walk off the job on Monday morning.

Six hundred and eight-five more hotel employees will join the already 600 striking workers in Boston, bringing the total number of striking hotel workers to almost 1,300. Workers at both Omni properties had walked off the job for three days from Sept. 19-21, but this time they say they won’t return to work until they reach an agreement with Omni Hotels & Resorts.

Striking workers include room attendants, house persons, front desk agents, telephone operators, doorpersons, bellhops, cooks, dishwashers, banquet staff, barbacks and more.

Hilton hotel workers walked off the job more than a week ago.

Since April, the hotel workers’ union says it has been bargaining for a new contract standard with significant wage increases and sustainable workloads. Workers say progress has been slow throughout negotiations.
